In this paper we present our findings from a series of interviews with companies developing web applications, investigating how quality issues are managed when developing web applications in a rush-to-market and competitive environment. Our findings suggest that requirement practises are communication intensive, that companies perceive quality attributes related to a good user experience important, and that companies don't have a clear trade-off situation.

From the Book: When I first came across PHP about three years ago, I never imagined that one day I'd be writing a foreword for a PHP book. As a matter of fact, back then, the possibility that there would actually ever be any PHP books seemed a bit far-fetched. Looking back at what made PHP grow to be one of the most widely used scripting languages for web development is no less than astonishing. My involvement in the PHP project started, like many things, by accident. As an end user, I'd stumbled on a bug in PHP/FI 2.0-something that was weird enough to get colleague Andi Gutmans and me to look under the hood. When we saw the code that made PHP/FI 2.0 tick, we weren't too pleased with it. On the other hand, we really liked the idea of an HTML-embedded, server-embedded server-side scripting language. So, like good to-be software engineers, we decided it'd be cool to write it from scratch, but this time, the "right way." Our rewrite of the language, and the huge amount of cooperative work that was put into a wide variety of function modules and sample code, pushed PHP beyond our wildest dreams and expectations. PHP is being used today on well over a million domains on the Internet, and is the tool of choice for server-side scripting in UNIX environments. PHP 4.0 is the next step in ensuring that PHP remains on the cutting edge of web scripting technologies for years to come. The Zend engine (***) revolutionizes the performance and scalability of PHP-based web sites. Its integrated session support; built-in XML, Java, and COM support; as well as a bundle of additional features enable the web developer to develop more powerful dynamic sites, more easily than everbefore. With the continued development and integration of leading-edge technologies, PHP stays up to date. Data-driven web applications are now taking over the role of traditional desktop applications as it is more convenient to the end user. However, developing a web application is considered challenging especially for junior web developers due to development processes, e.g. selection of development frameworks, learning the framework with lengthy documentations as well as experiment, or integrating the framework during the development. In this paper we proposed and developed a quick prototyping tool, "pigeon-table", for datadriven web application development specifically focusing on data retrieval from MySQL database and render the data into an interactive table in a web application. The aims of this project are, 1) to optimize web developers' productivity in web application development as the tool is straightforward and simple, and 2) to enhance end user browsing experience with an interactive table in the data-driven web application.

This study uses a case study document review methodology of interpretive research paradigm to address the enhancement of effective collaboration and knowledge transfer on e-learning and the teaching of web application development within universities in developing countries. A proposed partnership project between Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa and the Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) in Uganda is used as a possible lunch pad. While South Africa is a leading country on the use of Internet-based services in Africa, much of the other African countries are lagging behind in technological developments especially e-learning and web application development. Given that e-learning progress, economical developments and other technological developments stand to benefit from reciprocal developments from countries in close proximity with one another, the overall e-technological progress in Africa is therefore being eroded and possibly being diminished unless most of the developing countries are carried along. The uniqueness of this study lies in the provision of insights into ways in which the developments in e-learning and the teaching of and web application development can be transferred and shared within the African continent while at the same time enhancing the technological progress of South Africa in general.

In this paper, we present a web application development framework that can improve efficiency of web application user interface (UI) development less affected by the change of web technologies. Recently, RIA (Rich Internet applications) has gotten a lot of attention. Dynamic UI is essential of RIA, but RIA programming is complicated and varies depending on its implementation. To employ such a new technology, how to reduce the cost increase and the efficiency degradation is important. We propose MVC(Model-View-Controller)-based UI model that can represent not only static UI but also dynamic UI independently from specific RIA implementation. In the upper process of development, developers can design UI with UI model, so they don't have to learn detail of RIA. In the lower process, a code generator generates specific RIA implementation code from UI model. Therefore programmers just have to write a code for customization. Evaluation result for sample application development shows programmers have only to program 25% of total lines of code for client-side.

We report an empirical study of nonprogrammers' mental models regarding particular concerns in web application development such as input validation, database lookup, and overview-detail relationships. The goal of the study was to understand how nonprogrammers think about the data and logic underlying a web application. In continuing work, we are using this understanding as a basis for the design of tools and development resources that are intuitive and easy to use. The current paper describes the empirical work that was done and discusses its implications for the design of end-user web development tools that could be used to develop web applications of intermediate complexity.

In this paper, we propose a novel web application development platform using the declarative programming and business process. In the proposed platform, we define the program flow by the business process, which can organize a program process efficiently and flexibly. Since the design of the user interface (UI) is independent of the business process, the developers can design the UI without considering the business process. Furthermore, a novel declarative programming language is proposed to describe the interactions among the components in the web pages as well as define the communication between the web pages and business process, leading to a simple, efficient, and flexible platform for the web application development. The implementation of the real web application example demonstrates the practical applicability and efficacy of the proposed platform.

web application development is confronted with increasing system complexity, new technical specification requirements, progressive changing of client terminal devices and security problems triggered by new cracking techniques. In this context, providing new methods for effectively developing web application in low cost becomes paramount. This brings new technical challenges of developing new data modeling and new techniques in data structure, database schema, page transition control, authorization, session management, programming, and input and output interface design technical areas, as web application development requires all of those techniques. At the same time, as the remarkable progress of information and communication technology (ICT) has been made, ICT technologies are bring dramatic changes to our lives and business. Thus, there is an increasing need for developing web applications for business and everyday life utilization. Building on previous research and applications, this paper presents that data models for developing web applications can be built using spreadsheets based on a cloud application development platform, called FOCAPLAS. This spreadsheet based developing approach presents our challenges on new methodologies of both the data modeling and programming for web application development.

A business model driven approach is proposed for the rapid development of web applications. In the definiteness phase, candidates of use cases, web pages and data fields are extracted. The candidates are utilized to build the corresponding model such as use case diagram, web page list and logical database model. The next process is to develop page diagram, page specification (with logic) and physical database diagram, which are used to build the web application. The efficiency this approach has been shown using a practical case study which is development of web application for supporting an association of auto repair shops.
