Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of educational institutes have been forced to execute online distributed education. In traditional courses conducting not only lectures but also practice, the instructor and teaching assistants walk around the class, check how the students are doing, find students who are having trouble, and guide them. However, in distributed education, it is difficult to do the same things as in a collocated environment;therefore, some measures are required. We have been conducting introductory software engineering education that applies web application development in addition to lectures. In the fully online implementation of this course, the following issues need to be considered: (1) the creation of a mechanism to mitigate problems regarding the building of a software engineering environment, and (2) the creation of a question and answer process during application development on a remote meeting system. This paper describes some solutions to the two issues.

A multivocal literature review on record management potential components in CRUD operation for web application development

In recent years, web application frameworks have been widely practised by many developers to increase programming productivity as the frameworks are more flexible, rapidly built using CRUD operation, MVC-based, secure and most of them are published under an open-source license which will reduce the final cost of development. Although the CRUD automation in the web application framework boosts the development process, there are many important aspects of a web application absent from the CRUD output. Therefore, this multivocal literature review investigates the record management aspects that are required in modern WA and the perceived benefit of integrating the record management aspect into CRUD operation. The study extracted 284 publications from respectable scientific resources and the grey resources literature created by WA development practitioners outside academic mediums. After a detailed review process, only 14 scientific primary studies and 13 gray studies were considered for this review based on defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The review shows that the most important aspects required in WA are search, role-based access control, retention, appraisal, search, audit trail, digital archiving, sharing, reporting, inactive files management and several other features. These important aspects have been analyzed and characterized according to its function and features. The method and procedure for integrating the specified aspect into CRUD operation are identified and discussed. Integrating and implementing the specified record management features into CRUD operation will boost the WA development productivity by producing more features as a standard output with integrated record management functions.

The development of web applications has a crucial role as most organizations have their own corporate web applications to meet the needs of their respective businesses. Different needs create different complexities which represent a new challenge to web application development. In order to ensure the timely delivery of a project, software providers offering this service choose to use Open Sources (OSS) as an alternative. Since OSS consist of an existing framework that can be implemented directly into the application, how far does this affect the complexity of the effort estimation? A number of research papers have outlined the efforts made to refine the complexity of this field. However, to our best knowledge a systematic overview of the research done on web application development that involves OSS usage does not appear to exist. Hence, the aim of this paper is to conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) of OSS web application development. For this purpose, 34 papers from a total of 67 papers were identified and studied. The findings of this study indicate that (a) no research has been carried out on the field mentioned;(b) there is no early effort estimation model for web projects that involve the usage of OSS. Therefore, this work provides an overview of the field besides identifying future research possibilities.

This paper discusses platform independent web application modeling and development in the context of model-driven engineering. A specific metamodel (and associated notation) is introduced and motivated for the modeling of dynamic web specific concerns. web applications are represented via three independent but related models (business, hypertext and presentation). A kind of action language (based on OCL and Java) is used all over these models to write methods and actions, specify constraints and express conditions. The concepts described in the paper have been implemented in the Netsilon tool and operational model-driven web information systems have been successfully deployed by translation from abstract models to platform specific models. © Springer-Verlag 2005.

Several methodologies have been proposed to improve the quality of web application development in the last decade. Some proposals provide techniques and mechanisms to specify the product model;others are focused on process development models. However, few approaches have suggested methods adapted to different situations and development circumstances. Besides, some industrial and academic methods are not flexible enough to react according to the different situations and projects conditions to be developed. These conditions may include application type and complexity, models to be created, development team characteristics, technological resources among others. This paper presents webFDM, a method grounded on Situational Method Engineering principles for the development of web applications and a CASE Tool COHESION. The KANON framework, used to characterize web development situations, is also described.

In this paper, we introduce the usage of enhanced web Components to create web applications with multi-device capabilities by composition. By using the latest developments of the family of W3C standards called "web Components" that we extent with dedicated communication and synchronization functionality, web developers are enabled to create web applications with ease. We enhance web Components with an event-based communication channel, which is not limited to a single browser window. With our approach, applications using the extended SmartComponents and an additional synchronization service also support multi-device scenarios. In contrast to other widget-based approaches (W3C Widgets, OpenSocial containers), the usage of SmartComponents does not require a dedicated platform, like Apache Rave. SmartComponents are based on standard web technologies, are natively supported by recent web browsers and loosely coupled using our extension. This ensures a high level of reuse. We show how SmartComponents are structured, can be created and used. Furthermore, we explain how the communication aspect is integrated and multi-device communication is achieved. Finally, we describe our demonstration by outlining two example applications.
