web page segmentation aims to break a page into sections that can reveal the information presentation structure and appear coherent to readers. In this paper, we propose a new web page segmentation framework based on the process of analyzing and understanding web page structure. After extracting the segmentation graph structure, we formulate the label assignment task which determines whether each boundary should segment current block or not on a graph as a structured learning problem. Computation of highest scoring label assignment relies on Viterbi algorithm and joint feature function captures the dependency among boundaries. To solve the learning of parameters, we adopt a learning model based on perceptron algorithm. Furthermore, utilizing the previous framework, we propose a web information crawling application framework which integrates web page segmentation and semantic block classification process.

For modern websites currently available web page segmentation algorithms are not yet of practical use. This is what is observed from recent studies. In this paper, a webpage Segmenter Using Block Function Tree has been described as a new approach for web page segmentation. It uses the fact that every block in the webpage plays a specific function that web designer designs the block for this function. The segmentation process is divided into two phases: The first one is building the Block Function Tree and the second one is analyzing the resulting Block Function Tree. To support our claim, an evaluation is conducted. We found that our approach works well even with visually complex web pages.

Each web page can be segmented into semantically coherent units that fulfill specific purposes. Though the task of automatic web page segmentation was introduced two decades ago, along with several applications in web content analysis, its foundations are still lacking. Specifically, the developed evaluation methods and datasets presume a certain downstream task, which led to a variety of incompatible datasets and evaluation methods. To address this shortcoming, we contribute two resources: (1) An evaluation framework which can be adjusted to downstream tasks by measuring the segmentation similarity regarding visual, structural, and textual elements, and which includes measures for annotator agreement, segmentation quality, and an algorithm for segmentation fusion. (2) The webis-webSeg-20 dataset, comprising 42,450 crowdsourced segmentations for 8,490 web pages, outranging existing sources by an order of magnitude. Our results help to better understand the "mental segmentation model" of human annotators: Among other things we find that annotators mostly agree on segmentations for all kinds of web page elements (visual, structural, and textual). Disagreement exists mostly regarding the right level of granularity, indicating a general agreement on the visual structure of web pages.

We propose a framework which can perform web page segmentation with a structured prediction approach. It formulates the segmentation task as a structured labeling problem on a transformed web page segmentation graph (WPS-graph). WPS-graph models the candidate segmentation boundaries of a page and the dependency relation among the adjacent segmentation boundaries. Each labeling scheme on the WPS-graph corresponds to a possible segmentation of the page. The task of finding the optimal labeling of the WPS-graph is transformed into a binary Integer Linear Programming problem, which considers the entire WPS-graph as a whole to conduct structured prediction. A learning algorithm based on the structured output Support Vector Machine framework is developed to determine the feature weights, which is capable to consider the inter-dependency among candidate segmentation boundaries. Furthermore, we investigate its efficacy in supporting the development of automatic web page classification.

web page segmentation into logical blocks is an important preprocessing step for recognizing informative content blocks in a page that leads to efficient information extraction and convenient display on the devices with small-sized screens. Previous methods for web page segmentation are not flexible in a dynamic web environment because they largely relied on heuristic rules generated by exploiting structural tags and visual information inherent in a page. To resolve this problem, this paper proposes a new method of web page segmentation by recognizing repetitive tag patterns called key patterns in the DOM tree structure of a page. We report on the Repetition-based page segmentation (REPS) algorithm, which detects key patterns in a page and generates virtual nodes to correctly segment nested blocks. A series of experiments performed for real web sites showed that REPS greatly contributes to improving the correctness of web page segmentation(1).

web page segmentation has a variety of benefits and potential web applications. Early techniques of web page segmentation are mainly based on machine learning algorithms and rule-based heuristics, which cannot be used for large-scale page segmentation. In this paper, we propose a formulated page segmentation method using visual semantics. Instead of analyzing the visual cues of web pages, this method utilizes three measures to formulate the visual semantics: layout tree is used to recognize the visual similar blocks;seam degree is used to describe how neatly the blocks are arranged;content similarity is used to describe the content coherent degree between blocks. A comparison experiment was done using the VIPS algorithm as a baseline. Experiment results show that the proposed method can divide a web page into appropriate semantic segments.

Integrated-Block: A New Combination Model to Improve web page segmentation

Context: web page segmentation methods have been used for different purposes such as web page classification and content analysis. These methods categorize a web page into different blocks, where each block contains similar components. Objective: The goal of this paper is to propose a new segmentation approach that semantically segments web pages into integrated blocks and obtains high segmentation accuracy. Method: In this paper, we propose a new segmentation model that semantically segments web pages into integrated blocks, where (1) it merges web page content into basic-blocks by simulating human perception using Gestalt laws of grouping;and, (2) it utilizes semantic text similarity to identify similar blocks and regroup these similar basic-blocks as integrated blocks. Results: To verify the accuracy of our approach, we (1) applied it to three datasets, (2) compared it with the five existing state-of-the-art algorithms. The results show that our approach outperforms all the five comparison methods in terms of precision, recall, F-1 score, and ARI. Conclusion: In this paper, we propose a new segmentation model and apply it to three datasets to (1) generate basic-blocks by simulating human perception to segment a web page, (2) identify semantically related blocks and regroup them as an integrated block, and (3) address limitations found in existing approaches.

With the advancement of internet technology, web page segmentation, which aims to divide web pages into semantically coherent units, has become increasingly crucial for web-related applications. Conventional purely visual web page segmentation approaches, which depend on traditional edge detection, face challenges in generalizing across complex web pages. Recently, the Segment AnythingModel (SAM) represents remarkable visual understanding and segmentation abilities. This inspires us that SAM can also demonstrate great potential inweb page segmentation. However, due to the lack of web-specific training data, its direct adaptation to web page segmentation domain has been hindered. To address this challenge, we propose webSAM-Adapter, an effective adaptation of SAM, featuring a three-module architecture specifically tailored for web page segmentation with minimal additional trainable parameters. First, we propose a patch embedding tune module for adjusting the frozen patch embedding features, which is crucial for modifying the distribution of the original model. Second, an edge components tune module is designed to learn significant structural features within each web page. Finally, the outputs of these specialized modules are sent into our key Adapter module, which employs a lightweightmulti-layer perceptron (MLP) to amalgamate these enriched features and generate webpage-specific knowledge. To the best of our knowledge, our method is the first successful adaptation of a large visual model like SAM to web page segmentation. Empirical evaluations on the comprehensive webis-webSeg-20 dataset demonstrate our model's state-of-the-art performance.

A method of page segmentation and recognition based on generalized hidden Markov model is present in this paper, according to the page content as well as the structural configuration. It can effective carry on the division to the homepage, thus distinguishes each homepage block part with GHMM. The experimental result indicated that, compares with the original page segmentation algorithm, this algorithm operation efficiency enhanced by 14.3%, and the effect of segmentation has significantly improved.

World Wide web has become the largest source of information. Consequently web based information retrieval, information extraction: automatic page adaptation and querying deep-web are gaining importance. The need for information retrieval applications is increasing. To address the problems of the ever expanding information over the internet, traditional information retrieval techniques have been applied. Such techniques are sometimes time consuming, and laborious, and the results obtained may be unsatisfactory. This study is an attempt to query web pages like MedlinePlus medical encyclopedia by segmenting the web pages. It summarizes the existing approaches for web page segmentation from the perspective of "structure realization for improved querying" on the web. It proposes a new algorithm VisHue for web page segmentation based on visual cues and heuristics and further uses the hierarchical structure generated by it to develop the Query by Segment or Tag (QBT) query interface. This interface is close to the end-user and exploits the relationships among the various content groups within a web page. Such an improved query-interface enables the user to perform in-depth querying. It is a step beyond the page-level search.
