From the Book: When I first came across PHP about three years ago, I never imagined that one day I'd be writing a foreword for a PHP book. As a matter of fact, back then, the possibility that there would actually ever be any PHP books seemed a bit far-fetched. Looking back at what made PHP grow to be one of the most widely used scripting languages for web development is no less than astonishing. My involvement in the PHP project started, like many things, by accident. As an end user, I'd stumbled on a bug in PHP/FI 2.0-something that was weird enough to get colleague Andi Gutmans and me to look under the hood. When we saw the code that made PHP/FI 2.0 tick, we weren't too pleased with it. On the other hand, we really liked the idea of an HTML-embedded, server-embedded server-side scripting language. So, like good to-be software engineers, we decided it'd be cool to write it from scratch, but this time, the "right way." Our rewrite of the language, and the huge amount of cooperative work that was put into a wide variety of function modules and sample code, pushed PHP beyond our wildest dreams and expectations. PHP is being used today on well over a million domains on the Internet, and is the tool of choice for server-side scripting in UNIX environments. PHP 4.0 is the next step in ensuring that PHP remains on the cutting edge of web scripting technologies for years to come. The main purpose of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) is to improve academic performance through collaborative systems design. To increase the quantity and quality of interactions in CSCL and to reduce feelings of loneliness and burnout during online learning, learner group regulation should be supported. According to the literature, performance and learning motivation cannot be achieved if group communication and interactions are not adequately supported in collaborative learning. However, studies comparing traditional online teamwork and co-regulation guidance are rare. In this context, the purpose of this study is to determine the effects of experimental application designed using agile project management tools to support students' group regulation in collaborative teamwork in online environments on co-regulation, transactive memory, group cohesion, atmosphere, and participation in web programming education. 91 university students participated in this study, which was carried out in the web programming course. The application lasted 17 weeks. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected in the study, which was designed with the mixed method. As a result of the research, there was a significant difference between the co-regulation, group cohesion, and group participation scores of the students in group regulation guidance practices through agile learning strategies, according to the intervention groups. It was concluded that the experimental application had positive effects on the improvement of group dynamics. This study provides an example of how to develop co-regulation practices in online collaborative contexts.

web developers use responsive web design to create user interfaces that can adapt to many form factors. To define responsive pages, developers must use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) or libraries and tools built on top of it. CSS provides high customizability, but requires significant experience. As a result, non-programmers and novice programmers generally lack a means of easily building custom responsive web pages. In this paper, we present a new approach that allows users to create custom responsive user interfaces without writing program code. We demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the approach through a new system we built, named Expresso. With Expresso, users define "keyframes" - examples of how their UI should look for particular viewport sizes - by simply directly manipulating elements in a WYSIWYG editor. Expresso uses these keyframes to infer rules about the responsive behavior of elements, and automatically renders the appropriate CSS for a given viewport size. To allow users to create the desired appearance of their page at all viewport sizes, Expresso lets users define either a "smooth" or "jump" transition between adjacent keyframes. We conduct a user study and show that participants are able to effectively use Expresso to build realistic responsive interfaces.

QML is a declarative programming language for defining user interfaces with advanced animation effects. A QML application consists of element declarations for structuring the user interface, and Javascript code for defining the application and animation logic. QML is used mainly for defining user interfaces of Qt applications, but it can be used also for writing standalone applications. This paper presents an approach that allows QML applications to run in a standard web browser. The chosen approach was to reimplement the QML execution engine by writing a QML parser and execution engine in Javascript to render the application to a HTML5 Canvas element. We discuss our implementation techniques for QML property bindings and for redefining variable scope in Javascript. For demonstrating the results, we executed two simple QML applications in a web browser, and gathered preliminary performance benchmark of the engine. In our measurements we found that with a good Javascript-engine, it is possible to achieve reference 60 fps speed of QML applications in a non-trivial case.

We show how to programmatically model processes that humans use when extracting answers to queries (e.g., "Who invented typewriter?", "List of Washington national parks") from semi-structured web pages returned by a search engine. This modeling enables various applications including automating repetitive search tasks, and helping search engine developers design micro-segments of factoid questions. We describe the design and implementation of a domain-specific language that enables extracting data from a webpage based on its structure, visual layout, and linguistic patterns. We also describe an algorithm to rank multiple answers extracted from multiple webpages. On 100,000+ queries (across 7 micro-segments) obtained from Bing logs, our system LASEweb answered queries with an average recall of 71%. Also, the desired answer(s) were present in top-3 suggestions for 95%+ cases.
