This paper proposes a method based on Markov Logic Network(MLN) to determine the time order of entity attribute values. We use the charac-teristics of web sources' currency, web sources inter-dependency and attribute data currency in a certain web source as predicates in MLN. We define five rules(new rules can be added) to infer the currency of different values provided by different sources. On one hand, this method considers currency problem based on entity attribute instead of the entire entity, which is critical to improve the quality of data provided by web integration Systems;on the other hand, this method summarizes characteristics of web sources and web data based on carefully anal-ysis. It is noteworthy that it is not complicate for the MLN model to incorporate new rules, which shows that the proposed method is extensible.

With the development of web data integration, it poses a new challenge how to match relevant reviews to integrated database objects and provide users the more complete holistic views of entities. According to the features of web data integration and reviews from web, we proposed a method based on 2-layer Conditional Random Fields(CRF) to match reviews to database objects. On the one hand, our method leverages the integrated structured entity and significantly reduces the dependence on manually labeled training data. On the other hand, we employ semi-Markov CRF to recognize the structured entities and exploit a variety of entity-level and pattern-level recognition clues available in a database of entities and labeled reviews, thereby effectively resolving the entity variety and improving the accuracy of the entity recognition. Experiments in multiple domains show that our method can substantially superior to traditional tf-idf based methods as well as a recent language model-based method for the review matching problem.

Distributed mashups: a collaborative approach to data integration

Purpose - This paper aims to present a collaborative mashup platform for dynamic integration of heterogeneous data sources. The platform encourages sharing and connects data publishers, integrators, developers and end users. Design/methodology/approach - This approach is based on a visual programming paradigm and follows three fundamental principles: openness, connectedness and reusability. The platform is based on semantic web technologies and the concept of linked widgets, i.e. semantic modules that allow users to access, integrate and visualize data in a creative and collaborative manner. Findings - The platform can effectively tackle data integration challenges by allowing users to explore relevant data sources for different contexts, tackling the data heterogeneity problem and facilitating automatic data integration, easing data integration via simple operations and fostering reusability of data processing tasks. Research limitations/implications - This research has focused exclusively on conceptual and technical aspects so far;a comprehensive user study, extensive performance and scalability testing is left for future work. Originality/value - A key contribution of this paper is the concept of distributed mashups. These ad hoc data integration applications allow users to perform data processing tasks in a collaborative and distributed manner simultaneously on multiple devices. This approach requires no server infrastructure to upload data, but rather allows each user to keep control over their data and expose only relevant subsets. Distributed mashups can run persistently in the background and are hence ideal for real-time data monitoring or data streaming use cases. Furthermore, we introduce automatic mashup composition as an innovative approach based on an explicit semantic widget model.

A semantic integration approach to publish and retrieve ecological data

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present a four-level architecture that aims at integrating, publishing and retrieving ecological data making use of linked data (LD). It allows scientists to explore taxonomical, spatial and temporal ecological information, access trophic chain relations between species and complement this information with other data sets published on the web of data. The development of ecological information repositories is a crucial step to organize and catalog natural reserves. However, they present some challenges regarding their effectiveness to provide a shared and global view of biodiversity data, such as data heterogeneity, lack of metadata standardization and data interoperability. LD rose as an interesting technology to solve some of these challenges. Design/methodology/approach - Ecological data, which is produced and collected from different media resources, is stored in distinct relational databases and published as RDF triples, using a relational-Resource Description Format mapping language. An application ontology reflects a global view of these datasets and share with them the same vocabulary. Scientists specify their data views by selecting their objects of interest in a friendly way. Adata view is internally represented as an algebraic scientific workflow that applies data transformation operations to integrate data sources. Findings - Despite of years of investment, data integration continues offering scientists challenges in obtaining consolidated data views of a large number of heterogeneous scientific data sources. The semantic integration approach presented in this paper simplifies this process both in terms of mappings and query answering through data views. Social implications - This work provides knowledge about the Guanabara Bay ecosystem, as well as to be a source of answers to the anthropic and climatic impacts on the bay ecosystem. GeTFIRST: ontology-based keyword search towards semantic disambiguation

Purpose - This paper aims to improve the semantic-disambiguation capability of an information-retrieval system by taking advantages of a well-crafted classification tree. The unstructured nature and sheer volume of information accessible over networks have made it drastically difficult for users to seek relevant information. Many information-retrieval methods have been developed to address this problem, and keyword-based approach is amongst the most common approach. Such an approach is often inadequate to cope with the conceptualization associated with user needs and contents. This brings about the problem of semantic ambiguation that refers to the disagreement in meaning of terms between involving parties of a communication due to polysemy, leading to increased complexity and lesser accuracy in information integration, migration, retrieval and other related activities. Design/methodology/approach - A novel ontology-based search approach, named GeTFIRST (short for Graph-embedded Tree Fostering Information Retrieval SysTem), is proposed to disambiguate keywords semantically. The contribution is twofold. First, a search strategy is proposed to prune irrelevant concepts for accuracy improvement using our Graph-embedded Tree (GeT)-based ontology. Second, a path-based ranking algorithm is proposed to incorporate and reward the content specificity. Findings - An empirical evaluation was performed on United States Patent And Trademark Office (USPTO) patent datasets to compare our approach with full-text patent search approaches. The results showed that GeTFIRST handled the ambiguous keywords with higher keyword-disambiguation accuracy than traditional search approaches. Originality/value - The search approach of this paper copes with the semantic ambiguation by using our proposed GeT-based ontology and a path-based ranking algorithm.

Client-server architecture for pre and post-processing of real problems involving two-dimensional generalized coordinates

Purpose - The aim of this paper is to propose a web environment for pre-processing and post-processing for 2D problems in generalized coordinate systems. Design/methodology/approach - The system consists of a web service for client-server communication, a database for user information, simulation requests and results storage, a module of (for) calculation processing (front-end) and a graphical interface for visualization of discretized mesh (back-end). Findings - The web system was able to model real problems and situations, where the user can describe the problem or upload a geometry file descriptor, generated from computer graphics software. The web system, programmed for finite difference solutions, was able to generate a mesh from other complex methods, such as finite elements method, adapting it to the proposed web system, respecting the finite difference mesh structure. Research limitations/implications - The proposed web system is limited to solve partial differential equations by finite difference discretization. We need to study about refinement and parameters adaptations to solve partial differential equations simulated with other methods. Practical implications - The web system includes implications for the development of a powerful real problems simulator, which is useful for computational physics researchers and engineers. The web system uses several technologies, such as Primefaces, JavaScript, JQuery and HTML, to provide an interactive user interface. Originality/value - The main contribution of this work is the availability of a generic web architecture for including other types of coordinate systems and to solve others partial differential equations. Moreover, this paper presents an extended version of the work presented in ICCSA 2014.

The web has been rapidly "deepened" by many searchable databases online, where data chidden behind query interfaces. There may be hundreds or thousands of web databases providing data of relevance to a specific domain on the web. In the face of these large-scale web databases, the core problem is to select the most appropriate ones to a user's query. While this problem has received more attentions recently, current approaches still have the simplified and empirical limitations. In this paper, we propose a web database selection approach based on classification. We cast web database selection as a classification problem and combine multiple kinds of features which are about the query and web databases. We use the classification model to obtain the relevancy of every individual web database for a user query and select top-K ones to provide the query results. Experiments show that our approach yields high performance.

Extracting Facets from Lost Fine-Grained Categorizations in dataspaces

Categorization of instances in dataspaces is a difficult and time consuming task, usually performed by domain experts. In this paper we propose a semi-automatic approach to the extraction of facets for the fine-grained categorization of instances in dataspaces. We focus on the case where instances are categorized under heterogeneous taxonomies in several sources. Our approach leverages Taxonomy Layer Distance, a new metric based on structural analysis of source taxonomies, to support the identification of meaningful candidate facets. Once validated and refined by domain experts, the extracted facets provide a fine-grained classification of dataspace instances. We implemented and evaluated our approach in a real world dataspace in the eCommerce domain. Experimental results show that our approach is capable of extracting meaningful facets and that the new metric we propose for the structural analysis of source taxonomies outperforms other state-of-the-art metrics.

There are many university websites on internet. These websites can be considered as external information resources on the internet that academic institutions or students can use this external resources in order to improve their decision making process. It is therefore, very important and critical that the information of these external resources can be acquired precisely and on time. Most university web sites provide data in a semi-structured form on the internet. The combination of semi-structured data from different sources on the internet often fails because of syntactic and semantic differences. The access, retrieval and utilization of information from the different websites impose a need for the data to be integrated. integration of web data is a complex process because of the heterogeneity nature of web data and thus needs some kind of a web data integration system. There are many types of heterogeneity and differences among university websites that makes data integration a difficult process (e.g., different data model, different syntax and semantics in schema and data instance level among web sources). In this paper, we recommend a system architecture for web data integration focusing on resolving the problems of semantic heterogeneity between university websites. We propose an ontology-based approach as a solution for the reconciliation of semantic conflicts between websites of universities and then develop a prototype of the proposed system for universities.

Recommending Optimal API Orchestration with Mining Frequent Mashup Patterns

As more and more organizations publish their data or services through Open APIs on the Internet, mashup applications have captured a lot of attention in recent years. However, as the number and categories of Open APIs grow rapidly, efficiently creating optimal mashup applications becomes a crucial issue for making the technology of mashup more applicable. In this work, we present a Mashup Directed Orchestration Model (MDOM) to depict the mashup patterns with a graph-based model on the basis of mashup orientation. According to the features of MDOM, by taking advantage of the theory of directed graph and the strategies used in the algorithms for discovering frequent sub-graphs, an algorithm named as FSOMM is presented to efficiently mine the frequent orchestration patterns hidden in the MDOMs. These discovered frequent orchestration patterns provide us a promising way to create optimal mashup applications. In addition, the performance of the proposed approach is verified by implementing a series of experiments on both synthetic and real datasets.
