An ER-based framework for declarative web programming

We describe a framework to support the implementation of web-based systems intended to manipulate data stored in relational databases. Since the conceptual model of a relational database is often specified as an entity-relationship (ER) model, we propose to use the ER model to generate a complete implementation in the declarative programming language Curry. This implementation contains operations to create and manipulate entities of the data model, supports authentication, authorization, session handling, and the composition of individual operations to user processes. Furthermore, the implementation ensures the consistency of the database w.r.t. the data dependencies specified in the ER model, i.e., updates initiated by the user cannot lead to an inconsistent state of the database. In order to generate a high-level declarative implementation that can be easily adapted to individual customer requirements, the framework exploits previous works on declarative database programming and web user interface construction in Curry.

When students studying programming subjects, the traditional lab-based or lecture-based teaching would not be sufficient. We have developed a set of online materials with the SPOC design approach and used it as supplementary support for a web programming subject. With the supporting materials, flipped classes have been conducted with carefully designed exercises. The initial student feedbacks are positive. Some analysis has been done to review how student performance linking to their study engagement is reported here.

The integration of game design elements into formative assessments, known as Gamified Formative Assessment (GFA), is a promising approach to enhance student engagement and motivation in web programming courses. However, the tangible impact of GFA on learning outcomes remains to be fully explored. This action research study investigates the effects of GFA on learning outcomes in a web programming course, using two specific GFA tools, QRdice and Quizizz, and contrasting their effectiveness with traditional non-gamified formative assessments (NGFA). The study involved 42 ICT Diploma students and employed a mixed-methods approach, with both quantitative and qualitative data derived from assessment scores, surveys, and interviews. The data analysis, conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics for quantitative data and thematic analysis for qualitative data, revealed no significant improvement in learning outcomes due to GFA. However, both the survey and interview data indicated a positive influence of GFA on students' perceptions and experiences. This study offers valuable insights for educators and researchers aiming to effectively incorporate GFA in web programming courses.

With the rapid development of World Wide web based applications, web programming course has been an core courses for students major in computer science. How to improve the teaching effect has always been the main concern of the teachers, especially the teachers from vocational colleges. Firstly, through analyzing the characteristics of web programming and the existing condition in the teaching of it, we put forward some novel ideas on teaching contents, teaching methods, evaluation measures, especially stimulating students' interest and confidence on web programming. And from our practice of these reforms, the proposed measures are effective.

web programming is a mandatory course in the syllabus of any BSc degree in Informatics Engineering. But, nowadays, designing and teaching an up-to-date web programming course is a very demanding challenge due to the fast technological advances that imposes a continuous update of the concepts, techniques, and tools. Nowadays, from a professional perspective, web development is starting to converge on merging front-end and back-end development. This requires new skills for web developers, traditionally separated into two groups (front-end and back-end), that are still not accompanied by academia web programming courses. This future trend motivates us for designing a higher education course that combines web design and server-side programming skills in a unified full-stack of web technologies to develop modern web applications. The paper intends to present and discuss a new higher education course for a curricular unit in web programming of a degree in Informatics in the European higher education system. The course is aligned with the new trends, providing students with fundamentals and basic skills in the development of web applications, using the full-stack approach to web development supported by the MEAN stack architecture.

We present ***, a synchronous reactive language that adds synchronous concurrency and preemption to JavaScript. Inspired from Esterel, *** simplifies the programming of non-trivial temporal behaviors as found in complex web interfaces or IoT controllers and the cooperation between synchronous and asynchronous activities. *** is compiled into plain sequential JavaScript and executes on unmodified runtime environments. We use three examples to present and discuss ***: a simple web login form to introduce the language and show how it differs from JavaScript, and two real life examples, a medical prescription pillbox and an interactive music system that show why concurrency and preemption help programming such temporal applications.

This paper introduces an interactive e-learning system that provides an integrated environment for web programming. The proposed system is web-based. It provides an online editor for writing, editing, updating, and executing programming code, so the learners can execute examples and practical exercises online. In addition, it provides auto complete and syntax highlighting in editing code, which could help learners to remember the syntax more easily. The proposed system provides communication and interactive tools including Chat-Room, E-Mail, and Discussion Board (Forum) among learners and instructors. Moreover, it provides the instructors with an online exam system. It monitors, collects and keeps information about learners' performance and activities. Therefore, instructors can use the recorded information to keep tracking of the learner's progress. The system is based on the common three-tier-architecture of web-based applications that is organized into presentation tier, logic tier, and data tier.

Although programming is a fundamental skill that must be mastered by computer science students, there are still many students who feel inferior in learning programming. Therefore, the author attempted to apply an alternative learning method, namely the flipped method (FL) in a web programming course. This paper exposes the evaluation result of the implementation of the flipped learning in the course. This study aims to investigate the FL method's effectiveness from the students' view and the performance of students in the class. We investigate 42 students taking the course in the winter semester of 2018. We obtained data on the students' perception through an online questionnaire. Furthermore, we determined the students' performance by comparing the class average grade and success rate of the students in a traditional learning class and a flipped learning class. The students perceive that the implementation of the FL approach in the course is effective. Moreover, the results of this implementation show the improvement in the students' performance.

In this paper, we present an automated assessment system for web programming assignments. The system has been designed to enable the alignment of teaching and industrial practises by using current unit testing practises for assessment. It has been implemented using a unit testing framework, comes with an example set of assignments, and integrates with common Learning Management Systems (LMS) using the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) interface.
