The integration of game design elements into formative assessments, known as Gamified Formative Assessment (GFA), is a promising approach to enhance student engagement and motivation in web programming courses. However, the tangible impact of GFA on learning outcomes remains to be fully explored. This action research study investigates the effects of GFA on learning outcomes in a web programming course, using two specific GFA tools, QRdice and Quizizz, and contrasting their effectiveness with traditional non-gamified formative assessments (NGFA). The study involved 42 ICT Diploma students and employed a mixed-methods approach, with both quantitative and qualitative data derived from assessment scores, surveys, and interviews. The data analysis, conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics for quantitative data and thematic analysis for qualitative data, revealed no significant improvement in learning outcomes due to GFA. However, both the survey and interview data indicated a positive influence of GFA on students' perceptions and experiences. This study offers valuable insights for educators and researchers aiming to effectively incorporate GFA in web programming courses.

ProgEdu4web: An automated assessment tool for motivating the learning of web programming course

The expanding software industry has increased the demand for proficient programming professionals. However, more than technical expertise is needed for successful software development;code quality assurance and effective teamwork are also indispensable. Unfortunately, recent graduates often exhibit deficiencies in programming, code quality assurance, and teamwork skills, highlighting the need for improvements in these areas. In response to these challenges, this study presents ProgEdu4web, an innovative Automated programming Assessment System designed to evaluate code quality and teamwork proficiency in web programming. The system integrates automatic source code evaluation tools for static code analysis, ensuring timely feedback on coding quality issues. To assess the effectiveness of ProgEdu4web, a questionnaire and hypothesis model was employed, surveying a cohort of 111 students enrolled in web programming classes. The study's findings demonstrate that the system significantly alleviated instructor workload while motivating students to enhance their web programming with good code quality and teamwork abilities.

web programming is a mandatory course in the syllabus of any BSc degree in Informatics Engineering. But, nowadays, designing and teaching an up-to-date web programming course is a very demanding challenge due to the fast technological advances that imposes a continuous update of the concepts, techniques, and tools. Nowadays, from a professional perspective, web development is starting to converge on merging front-end and back-end development. This requires new skills for web developers, traditionally separated into two groups (front-end and back-end), that are still not accompanied by academia web programming courses. This future trend motivates us for designing a higher education course that combines web design and server-side programming skills in a unified full-stack of web technologies to develop modern web applications. The paper intends to present and discuss a new higher education course for a curricular unit in web programming of a degree in Informatics in the European higher education system. The course is aligned with the new trends, providing students with fundamentals and basic skills in the development of web applications, using the full-stack approach to web development supported by the MEAN stack architecture.

We present ***, a synchronous reactive language that adds synchronous concurrency and preemption to JavaScript. Inspired from Esterel, *** simplifies the programming of non-trivial temporal behaviors as found in complex web interfaces or IoT controllers and the cooperation between synchronous and asynchronous activities. *** is compiled into plain sequential JavaScript and executes on unmodified runtime environments. We use three examples to present and discuss ***: a simple web login form to introduce the language and show how it differs from JavaScript, and two real life examples, a medical prescription pillbox and an interactive music system that show why concurrency and preemption help programming such temporal applications.

web applications are ideal for implementing information systems;they can organize and persist the data in a database, do not require installation on client machines, and can be instantly updated everywhere. However, web programming is complex due to its heterogeneous nature, causing web frameworks to suffer from insufficient or leaky abstraction, weak static consistency checking, and security features that are not enforced. We developed the webDSL web programming language, which supports direct expression of intent, strong static consistency checking, linguistic abstractions for web programming concerns, and automatically enforces security features for web applications. We have used webDSL for over 10 years to create information systems for academic workflows with thousands of users. Based on our experiences with these applications, we improved the webDSL compiler and runtime to increase robustness, performance, and security of applications. In this experience report, we reflect on the lessons learned and improvements made to the language runtime.

Although programming is a fundamental skill that must be mastered by computer science students, there are still many students who feel inferior in learning programming. Therefore, the author attempted to apply an alternative learning method, namely the flipped method (FL) in a web programming course. This paper exposes the evaluation result of the implementation of the flipped learning in the course. This study aims to investigate the FL method's effectiveness from the students' view and the performance of students in the class. We investigate 42 students taking the course in the winter semester of 2018. We obtained data on the students' perception through an online questionnaire. Furthermore, we determined the students' performance by comparing the class average grade and success rate of the students in a traditional learning class and a flipped learning class. The students perceive that the implementation of the FL approach in the course is effective. Moreover, the results of this implementation show the improvement in the students' performance.

When students studying programming subjects, the traditional lab-based or lecture-based teaching would not be sufficient. We have developed a set of online materials with the SPOC design approach and used it as supplementary support for a web programming subject. With the supporting materials, flipped classes have been conducted with carefully designed exercises. The initial student feedbacks are positive. Some analysis has been done to review how student performance linking to their study engagement is reported here.

Modern web applications are highly interactive and complex with various chal- lenges, such as maintaining mutable states and making asynchronous operations, which need to be addressed. By addressing these challenges, web applications can be made easier to develop, maintain and reason about. This thesis presents com- mon category theory concepts and how they can be used to solve these challenges by structuring and easing the development of complex web applications. The current state and benefits of applying category theory concepts in web programming are presented by comparing existing category theory based tools in multiple programming languages against the challenges along with concrete examples. Implementations of categorical concepts in the existing tools are com- pared against the theory. Furthermore, related research about a specific challenge is presented. Many of the challenges can be addressed with various monads as they can model numerous side effects such as DOM manipulations. Researched tools provide different algebraic data types, which implement abstractions such as functor, applicative functor and monad from category theory. These abstractions, in turn, unify several programming languages and libraries. Additionally, they provide clear semantics and laws to build interactive and complex web applications, which are easy to develop and reason about.
