A course on web languages and web-based applications

With the growth in the popularity of the World Wide web (WWW), there is a, need to provide education and hands-on training to students in preparing materials for presentation on the web, developing client and server-side software, and building web-based applications. Employers seek candidates who are proficient in computer languages and tools used on the WWW. Courses on web programming are in great demand. this paper presents the details of a course the author has developed on web languages and web-based applications. Key features of the course are 1) teaching of diverse web languages and technologies using a program completion strategy, 2) discussion of web-based applications involving database access and electrical/mechanical measuring instruments, and 3) long individual student projects and seminars.

Benefits and Challenges of Isomorphism in Single-page Applications: Case Study and Review of Gray Literature

An isomorphic web application shares code between the server and the client by cleverly combining suitable parts of server-rendered applications and single-page applications. In this article, we study the benefits and challenges of isomorphism in single-page applications in terms of a gray literature review and a case study. The case study was conducted as a developer interview, where developers familiar with isomorphic web applications were interviewed. The results of both studies are then compared and the key findings are compared together. The results show that isomorphism in single-page applications brings benefits to both the developers and the end-users. Isomorphism in single-page appli-cations is challenging to implement and has some downsides, but they mostly affect developers. Implementing isomorphism enables sharing code between the server and the client, but it increases the complexity of the application. Framework and library compatibility are issues that must be addressed by the developers.

Exceptional Asynchronous Session Types

Session types statically guarantee that communication complies with a protocol. However, most accounts of session typing do not account for failure, which means they are of limited use in real applications-especially distributed applications-where failure is pervasive. We present the first formal integration of asynchronous session types with exception handling in a functional programming language. We define a core calculus which satisfies preservation and progress properties, is deadlock free, confluent, and terminating. We provide the first implementation of session types with exception handling for a fully-fledged functional programming language, by extending the Links web programming language;our implementation draws on existing work on effect handlers. We illustrate our approach through a running example of two-factor authentication, and a larger example of a session-based chat application where communication occurs over session-typed channels and disconnections are handled gracefully.

The article identifies the most-sought IT job skills and examines the change in demand for these skills over a three-year period from April 2002 to April 2005. The IT job market is no longer in a decline. The total number of available positions has increased almost 50% since April 2002. Only a year ago, the job market was much like the stock market in that it could not move up or down without running into itself. Now, in an improving job market, it is increasingly important for IT professionals to be aware of the demand for specific skills. Professionals should also pay attention to the skills for which demand may be growing in order to better position themselves in the competitive job market. The need for web-related development has changed the demand for programming skills. web programming comprises a complex set of skills including both programming and scripting languages as well as meta-languages such as XML. web programming has jumped into a commanding lead in the total number of jobs requiring programming skills. web programming, Unix, C++, Java, SQL programming, and Oracle database seem to be the top six skills in the current job market. A keyless Entry System based on Arduino board with Wi-Fi technology

Controlling door access is an important aspect regarding real-life problems. The problem arises when there is a difficulty to access a certain facility, especially when keys are not available. This is paper proposes a keyless Entry System that focus on using Arduino circuit board together with a Wi-Fi module and php language in order to grant access to a locked door. The main goal of this work is to combine both software and hardware to solve real-life problems like the one this paper focusing on. The second goal is to explore which services can be obtained when such systems applied on the ground. Finally, to gain knowledge regarding basic Electrical Engineering concepts with respect to circuit boards and hardware implementation. A prototype of the suggested system and a web site were created for system user to have a control over his room door to lock or unlock it remontely. The created prototype of the proposed system shows that the introduced one will be helpful for those who are concerned with such problems will make life much easier by applying it. The programming capabilities of the web can be viewed as an afterthought, designed originally by non-programmers for relatively simple scripting tasks. This has resulted in cornucopia of partially overlapping options for building applications. Depending on one's viewpoint, a generic standards-compatible web browser supports three, four or five built-in application rendering and programming models. In this paper, we give an overview and comparison of these built-in client-side web application architectures in light of the established software engineering principles. We also reflect on our earlier work in this area, and provide an expanded discussion of the current situation. In conclusion, while the dominance of the base HTML/CSS/JS technologies cannot be ignored, we expect web Components and webGL to gain more popularity as the world moves towards increasingly complex web applications, including systems supporting virtual and augmented reality.

Functional languages have been used with great success in the domain of web programming. The use of reactive programming approaches to deal with time-varying data reduces the need for callbacks, and allows web applications to be written in a more declarative style. In spite of advances in functional reactive web programming, various issues remain with integrating reactive data into web pages. Portions of presentation-layer code are typically written in the functional language and imperatively added to a container section on a page, fragmenting design and requiring developers to work around the lack of proper and safe integration between the data, client and server tiers of their applications. In this paper, we investigate the use of F# compile-time metaprogramming techniques to enable developing type-safe, reactive client-server applications with seamless server-side persistence using webSharper, a mature F# web framework. Next to the two-way binding between client-side data models and their corresponding presentation, the reactive data models in our work can also express the details of server-side persistence and synchronization, using a modular approach and a strongly-typed communication channel over web sockets with communicating agents between the two tiers. The work presented also enables using annotated HTML markup templates, translated by an F# type provider to our statically-typed reactive data models. This way, the design artifacts can be externalized into native HTML that designers can easily work with, and markup changes are checked against the F# code base at compile time. We demonstrate the combination of these techniques with a data-aware single-page client-server chat application, expressed entirely in F#. We find that type safety, the uniform F# programming model, and the reactive design around data binding, synchronization, and persistence greatly enhances developer productivity.
