A Retrospective on user Interface Development Technology

The authors present a brief survey on the evolution of user interface (UI) development technology, especially over the past two decades, shaped by the desktop, web, and mobile eras. From the technology mainstream, the authors describe form-oriented, template-based, object-oriented, hybrid, and declarative frameworks and address model-driven and generic approaches. The focus of this article is on a framework of UI development concerns and how these have been addressed in each analyzed technology or group of technologies. At the end, the authors summarize current issues and future directions of UI development in general.

Browsing WWW documents is interactive. Not only their layout but also their interaction structures should be organised well to be effective to the reader and to get engineering benefits by composition. We define four primitive logical browsing structures. These are the sequential, go-to, nested, and iterative structures.. To support these primitive browsing structures, five groups of interface structures are proposed in this paper. These are the sequential, go-to, nested, loop, and evolutionary interface structures.

The advancements of web technologies in recent years made it possible to switch from traditional desktop software to online solutions. Today, people naturally use web applications to work together on documents, spreadsheets, or blogs in real time. Also interactive data visualizations are more and more shared in the web. They are thus easily accessible, and it is possible to collaboratively discuss and explore complex data sets. A still open problem in collaborative information visualization is the online exploration of node-link diagrams of graphs (or networks) in fields such as social sciences or systems biology. In this paper, we address challenges related to this research problem and present a client/server-based visualization system for the collaborative exploration of graphs. Our approach uses webGL to render large graphs in a web application and provides tools to coordinate the analysis process of multiple users in synchronous as well as asynchronous sessions.

Designing UIs that run across multiple devices is increasingly important. To address this, we have created a prototyping tool called Damask, which targets web UIs that run on PCs and mobile phones, and prompt-and-response style voice UIs. In Damask, designers sketch out their design for one device while using design patterns to specify higher-level concepts within their design. Damask's patterns include pre-built UI fragments that are already optimized for each device. Designers also use layers to specify which UI parts are common across devices and which are specific to one device. Damask uses the sketches and patterns to generate designs for the other devices, which the designers. can refine. A study performed with 12 professional UI designers found that, in the early stages, designers using patterns and layers in Damask created cross-device UIs that are rated at least as good as those created without patterns and layers, without more time.

One of the main reasons for the success of web 2.0 is the improvement in user experience. This improvement is a consequence of the evolution from HTML user interfaces (UI) to more usable and richer UI. The most popular web 2.0 applications have selected the Rich Internet Application (RIA) paradigm to achieve this goal. However, the current web Engineering methods do not provide the expressivity required to produce RIA interfaces. This work presents a RIA Metamodel to deal with the new technological challenges that have arisen with web 2.0 development. This metamodel supports two main perspectives: 1) the definition of the UI as a combination of widgets from a selected RIA technology;and 2) the specification of the UI interaction as a consequence of the events produced by the user. In order to illustrate how this RIA Metamodel can be used in a Model-driven Engineering (MDE) method, this work also presents the integration of the RIA Metamodel with the OOWS method.

Browsing large amounts of assorted multimedia poses several challenges on creating a supporting user interface. Even further, if metadata, structures and relations are defined on top of multimedia fragments, the complexity of a multimedia repository increases. However, this is also a path for exploiting new browsing mechanisms. This paper presents insights on which aspects should be available on a task-oriented user interface for browsing a structured multimedia repository, centred on speeding up interaction through media independent navigation schemes and user advisory.

This article presents an architecture for the production and delivery of Rich Digital Books on the web. These books are transformed and enriched with supporting media, like images and sound, pursuing the goal of reaching broader audiences and enlarging usage possibilities. The architecture affords for the production process' automation, and thus has the potential to increase digital books' availability. The architecture also enjoys a high flexibility degree, allowing the production of books that can be read with web-based technologies, such as web browsers.

Thanks to recent advancements in natural language interaction, dialogue-based online Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) employing Large Language Models (LLMs) have begun to emerge. However, the effective design of LLM-based ITS interfaces to support learning still requires attention. In this demo, we present the initial implementation of MyLearningTalk (MLT), a web-based ITS powered by LLMs. MLT exploits state-of-the-art techniques such as retrieval augmented generation to offer interactive features to provide users with grounded answers and a tailored experience to enhance and facilitate the learning process.
