To improve the interactive animated teaching platform developed in the electromagnetics revitalization program in Taiwan, a project was granted by IEEE MTT-S Education Committee under the SIGMA-WE initiative in the end of 2018. New interactive web-based learning modules have also been voluntarily developed. Among them, a learning module for metallic rectangular waveguide will be introduced in this paper. This module shows the animation of mode patterns of a rectangular waveguide, such as the electric field of TE10 mode and the magnetic field of TM11 mode. Cut planes to show the field patterns are freely selectable by users. Operating frequency is also a user-input parameters to facilitate the learning of cutoff behavior. The web-based learning module is developed using JavaScript and related cross-browser libraries.

Investigating Chinese University Students' Enjoyment in a web-based Language learning Environment: Validation of the Online Foreign Language Enjoyment Scale

The revolution in web-based technologies has enriched pedagogical practices and motivated scholars to address learners' positive and negative emotions in the web-based language learning environment. In this study, we first examined the psychometric properties of the Foreign Language Enjoyment Scale (FLES) and then developed the Online Foreign Language Enjoyment Scale (OFLES). We adopted a mixed-method approach using a sample of 383 first language Chinese EFL undergraduates. In stage one of the research, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis supported an 11-item and 4-factor OFLES structure with an ideal model fit. The four sub-domains of the new enjoyment construct were OFLES- Teacher, Private, Interaction, and Competence. The Teacher domain accounted for most variance. In stage two, the qualitative analyses of feedback on an open-ended question concerning enjoyable episodes from 56 of the 383 participants revealed various sources of enjoyment for Chinese university EFL learners attending online English courses. Our findings contribute to an emerging wave of research examining the cross-contextual application of the FLES and provide important pedagogical implications for L2 practitioners and researchers. We discuss suggestions for future research.

Effectiveness of peer review as cooperative web-based learning method applied out-of-class in a role playing game: A case study by quasi-experimental approach

Education at universities requires a high proportion of self-study supported by instruments which motivate students to deepen their knowledge with case studies and training software. The gain in learning is higher when what is learned is reflected by others in a cooperative process. The Class Peer Review (CPR) requires from students to evaluate each other but lecturers lose a lot of time when applying it during the lecture. Research on CPR shows many different approaches to how this method should be carried out effectively and many of them still demand a high presence of the lecturer. In contrast to most studies, this article reports the results of a CPR conducted outside the classroom and assisted by a web-supported role playing game representing a publisher where a common online class journal is used as an incentive and motivational element. The effectiveness of CPR was examined by means of a quasi-experimental study. It turned out that the experimental group used the training software significantly more frequently in addition to the lecture materials and a meaningful increase in group dynamics was recorded. Also female students were more motivated to continue this type of group work in the future. Final grades were better under CPR conditions, but the effect was statistically weak. Basically, the CPR method seems to be an effective tool to extend problem-based teaching to the self-learning phase if practiced in combinaktion with a role play and fictive Class-Journals as incentive. This provides further potential to e-learning instruments.

Teaching style and personalized content delivery may have a significant impact on learning. While personalization for learners takes center stage in many research efforts, the same is not so true for teaching. A critical step in teaching is designing effective and customizable lesson plans using best-practices. In this paper, we present a web-based lesson plan design tool, called vTutor, that is designed keeping personalization for teachers in mind. We present and discuss content authoring using vTutor for web-based computational thinking classes.

The Knowledge Summaries for Comprehensive Breast Cancer Control (KSBCs) are a series of 14 publications aligned with World Health Organization guidance on evidence-based breast cancer control and accepted frameworks for action. To study utilization of the KSBCs in the development of locally relevant breast cancer control policies and programs in limited resource settings, the National Cancer Institute Center for Global Health, the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center developed the Project ECHO (R) for KSBCs (KSBC ECHO). Project ECHO is an online model which employs case-based learning, while promoting multi-directional learning and network-building. The program was evaluated using a pre-post study design to assess if this online collaborative learning platform can be an effective model for dissemination and utilization of the KSBCs to inform breast cancer control programs and policy advocacy in limited resource settings. A total of 28 KSBC ECHO participants (57 %) responded to the baseline and endpoint program evaluation surveys. Across all 28 respondents, analysis of the data indicates that knowledge increase was statistically significant overall: average knowledge gain was 0.77, 95 % CI [0.44-1.08] and p value < 0.0001. A majority of responding team leads reported that the core ECHO components (case/didactic presentations, discussion) contributed to a great extent to strengthening their project proposal/goals. Program evaluation survey responses indicate that utilization of this online platform provided an opportunity for individual knowledge gain, multi-directional information exchange, network-building, and strengthening of the proposed breast cancer control projects based in limited resource settings.

Registered nurses' perception of self-efficacy and competence in smoking cessation after participating in a web-based learning activity

Aims and objectivesTo describe how registered nurses having undergone a web-based learning activity perceive their self-efficacy and competence to support patients with smoking cessation in connection with surgery. BackgroundSmoking cessation in connection with surgery reduces postoperative complications, and the support patients get from registered nurses may be important in helping them become smoke-free in connection with their surgery. Therefore, registered nurses are in need of enhanced understanding about which kind of counselling is the most effective for smoking cessation. Educating large groups of registered nurses in a digital environment appears to be a flexible and cost-effective way. Design and methodsA convergent mixed-method design with data collection was done using questionnaires (n=47) and semistructured interviews (n=11). Inclusion criteria were registered nurses in surgical wards. The samples were nonprobability and modified nested. Descriptive statistics and content analysis were used for data analysis. ResultsAfter completing the web-based learning activity, the registered nurses perception was that of good self-efficacy and increased competence in supporting patients with smoking cessation in connection with surgery. They improved their understanding of how to talk about smoking cessation with patients in dialogue using open-ended questions. Nevertheless, the registered nurses requested opportunities for dialogue and interaction with colleagues or topic experts. ConclusionsThe results indicate that registered nurses can enhance their competence in supporting patients to embrace smoking cessation by learning in a digital environment. Self-efficacy and understanding of the topic seems to motivate registered nurses to counsel patients about smoking cessation. Relevance to clinical practiceFindings from this study will be of particular interest to educators in healthcare settings who can devise further development of web-based learning activities.

Gamification is the use of game elements in non-game contexts like office work or learning. Due to its deep implications on human behavior, there are many critical voices but in principle the gamification of learning management systems is possible and different solutions are on the market. The situation is very different when users are mashing-up their personal learning environments from different web-based learning services. This paper discusses the theoretical and technical gamification challenges of personal learning systems. It comes up with a framework that allows learning communities and individual learners even without programming experience to configure game elements and game rules in an intuitive, fine-granular and flexible way for existing web-based learning services. To avoid changing existing code it uses aspect-oriented programming techniques. The evaluation showed that users were able to understand the concepts and could gamify web-based learning services more easily. The gamification framework is available as open source software and will lead to more, easier and dynamic gamification of existing web-based learning services.

Introduction Health care providers can make errors when administering medicines, and when medicines are given intravenously (IV) or are high-alert medicines (e.g., contrast agents, analgesics, adrenergic agonists). Errors can result in significant patient harm. Radiology departments’ professionals’ medication competence should be developed and regularly evaluated using effective evidence-based learning methods. This quasi-experimental study aimed to compare IV pharmacotherapy knowledge acquisition and retention after simulation-based learning or web-based learning. Methods Radiographers were recruited from two hospitals’ clinical radiology units (experimental group, n = 36;control group, n = 41). The participants completed the same knowledge test related to IV pharmacotherapy three times: (1) before educational interventions (pretest);(2) post-test 1 to 2 weeks after the interventions;and (3) follow-up 6 months later to evaluate the sustainability of learning. Results Both simulation-based and web-based learning increased radiographers’ knowledge of IV pharmacotherapeutics. In sensitivity analysis (groups matched for IV pharmacotherapeutics knowledge at baseline), scores in the simulation arm showed greater increase, but the difference did not reach statistical significance. The changes were sustained at 6 months. Furthermore, 82% (18 of 22) in the simulation arm had enhanced scores at post-test compared with 68% (23 of 34) in web-based arm and 62% (18 of 29) in the matched arm. Discussion The improvement in knowledge of IV pharmacotherapy was greater after simulation-based learning, and these improvements were sustained 6 months later. However, the impact of enhanced knowledge on the processes and outcomes of care require further exploration. © 2016 Association for Radiologic & Imaging Nursing

Project-based learning (PjBL) is a promising approach for supporting learning of computer programming by addressing the gap between the attainment of abstract knowledge and the application of this knowledge to authentic programming tasks. The World Wide web has considerable potential to expand and improve PjBL environments. However, making implicit aspects of a programming task accessible to learners and instructors to support reflection and improvement can be challenging. This paper discusses the challenge of PjBL in programming education and outlines a set of key aspects and an analysis framework to inform design and analysis of PjBL programming in web-based environments, by exploiting the emerging field of Teaching and learning Analytics. based on the proposed analysis framework, the design of an empirical study is outlined, capitalizing on a novel web-based PjBL environment that makes complex cognitive processes accessible and affords the analysis of its effects on learning programming in multiple aspects.

As cybersecurity has become a huge problem of today's society, the demand for cybersecurity experts is increasing. Therefore, many researchers and organizations create training environments for professionals to have hands-on activities. However, in most cases, they are created manually and only focus on features, without a pedagogic point of view. This research proposes an interactive training interface aiming to bring a better interaction inspired by the web-based learning theory. Moreover, it runs on top of a system that can setup the training environment automatically and perform unmanned cyber attacks. In this paper, we first define requirements for a modern e-learning system for cybersecurity training. We then describe how a defense training system is designed and implemented in this research. After that, a comparison of the implemented interface with the theory of interaction in web-based learning is presented. based on this theory, a survey is conducted on participants with various cybersecurity background levels to evaluate the effectiveness of the training, and what participants expect from hands-on cybersecurity defense training programs. The time for environment creation is also evaluated.
