Influences of experiential year and web-based learning module on student pharmacists' confidence and competence in pain management

Objectives: Compare the confidence and competence in pain management skills between student pharmacists at the end of their didactic and experiential years. Examine the potential influence of general medicine faculty preceptors, and a web-based experiential learning module on students' confidence and competence skills. Methods: Two cohorts of students were surveyed at the end of the third (P3) and fourth (P4) professional years to assess their self-reported confidence and competence on four pain management skills. During the second year of the study, students were asked to complete a web-based learning module aimed at improving competency in pain management. Confidence and competence measures were compared for each cohort with a Fisher's exact test. Results: Students were more confident than competent on all four pain management skills evaluated, and overall competence between both class years was suboptimal. Competence in pain management declined among P4 students who did not complete the learning module. Conclusion: Pharmacy students overestimate their pain management skills, particularly prior to their final experiential year. During the experiential year, pain management skills decline without an educational intervention, but having students complete learning modules can improve their competence. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. The popularity of web-based learning (WBL) application has provided different learning resource for the online learning users in different sites. However, without proper guidance, it will be very difficult for the online users without enough background knowledge to choose satisfactory resources in their learning processes. Therefore, A novel Hybrid Collaborative Filtering (HCF) called Standard Deviation HCF (SD-HCF) for WBL prediction is proposed. We consider both user and resource similarity, and a weight is added to the similarity compassion to solve the overestimation of PCC similarity. Meanwhile, a standard deviation weight is integrated to prediction phase. The experimental results on a real-world WBL datasets, show that, SD-HCF can achieve high prediction accuracy as compared with other collaborative filter methods.

The use of information technology in learning has become a demand for the implementation of modern education. Various patterns of technology integration in learning are proposed to improve optimal learning outcomes. This study aims to develop learning media in the form of web-based e-colloquium to increase students' soft-skills. This development used research and development method with the ADDIE model (analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating). This study found that web-based E-colloquium was feasible to be implemented. In addition, responses obtained from both students and the public show that product implementation provides broad opportunities to develop students' skills such as communication skills, mental readiness, and public presentation technique skills. This development product contributes to an alternative learning media that could be beneficial for higher education institutions in Indonesia.

Despite attempts to improve the vocational students' performance in industrial robotics, student achievements are constantly decreasing. Because the student may not be known what their learning problem is and how they need to learn. This paper is an attempt to propose the students' guidance with web-based personalized learning. The beginning of our work concerns the construction of a test concept item that is used to diagnose learning problems based on industrial robot concepts for vocational education students. Then, we develop learning material to support students learning after receiving a suggestion. The ambition of the present work is to enhance student performance by providing them with web-based learning using personalized tools. Therefore, we hope that this study will guide engineering educators in developing an individualized learning system and combining a student's hands-on opportunity in the future.

Evaluation of a web-based E-learning Platform for Brief Motivational Interviewing by Nurses in Cardiovascular Care: A Pilot Study

Background: Brief motivational interviewing (MI) can contribute to reductions in morbidity and mortality related to coronary artery disease, through health behavior change. Brief MI, unlike more intensive interventions, was proposed to meet the needs of clinicians with little spare time. While the provision of face-to-face brief MI training on a large scale is complicated, web-based e-learning is promising because of the flexibility it offers. Objective: The primary objective of this pilot study was to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a web-based e-learning platform for brief MI (MOTIV@COEUR), which was evaluated by nurses in cardiovascular care. The secondary objective was to assess the preliminary effect of the training on nurses' perceived brief MI skills and self-reported clinical use of brief MI. Methods: We conducted a single-group, pre-post pilot study involving nurses working in a coronary care unit to evaluate MOTIV@COEUR, which is a web-based e-learning platform for brief MI, consisting of two sessions lasting 30 and 20 minutes. MOTIV@COEUR covers 4 real-life clinical situations through role-modeling videos showing nurse-client interactions. A brief introduction to MI is followed by role playing, during which a nurse practitioner evaluates clients' motivation to change and intervenes according to the principles of brief MI. The clinical situations target smoking, medication adherence, physical activity, and diet. Nurses were asked to complete both web-based training sessions asynchronously within 20 days, which allowed assessment of the feasibility of the intervention. Data regarding acceptability and preliminary effects (perceived skills in brief MI, and self-reported clinical use of conviction and confidence interventions) were self-assessed through web-based questionnaires 30 days (+/- 5 days) after the first session. Objective. To implement and evaluate interactive web-based learning modules prior to advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) on inpatient general medicine. Design. Three clinical web-based learning modules were developed for use prior to APPEs in 4 health care systems. The aim of the interactive modules was to strengthen baseline clinical knowledge before the APPE to enable the application of learned material through the delivery of patient care. Assessment. For the primary endpoint, postassessment scores increased overall and for each individual module compared to preassessment scores. Postassessment scores were similar among the health care systems. The survey demonstrated positive student perceptions of this learning experience. Conclusion. Prior to inpatient general medicine APPEs, web-based learning enabled the standardization and assessment of baseline student knowledge across 4 health care systems.

Benefits of a bilingual web-based anatomy atlas for nursing students in learning anatomy

Background Registered nurses are required for high-quality healthcare. Thus, the anatomy course is essential regarding professional knowledge of the human body during the nursing training process. However, previous studies have indicated that anatomy teaching time and anatomy teachers were reduced and insufficient. Therefore, to improve the learning of practical anatomy in response to these difficulties, a bilingual National Taiwan University web-based anatomy atlas (NTU-WAA) was created as a cross-platform application and its feasibility was evaluated. Methods The comparison of anatomy examination scores between nursing students of two cohorts (66 from the 2018-2019 cohort, whom was without NTU-WAA application;54 from the 2019-2020 cohort, to whom NTU-WAA was offered) and the evaluation of questionnaires collected from nursing students of the 2019-2020 cohort and 4 anatomy teachers were carried out to define the feasibility of this strategy. Results Results obtained by nursing students for the 2019-2020 cohort showed a significant increase in anatomy learning performance compared with that of the 2018-2019 cohort with reference to the laboratory midterm [2018-2019 cohort vs. 2019-2020 cohort, mean (standard deviation, SD): 77.20 (16.14) vs. 81.80 (12.03);p = 0.043], the laboratory final examination [59.68 (15.28) vs. 80.35 (13.74);p < 0.001] and the theory final examination [80.85 (10.10) vs. 84.33 (6.925);p = 0.017]. Moreover, results of the questionnaires indicated that the new bilingual cross-platform atlas was highly accepted by students and teachers. Conclusions The NTU-WAA, a bilingual web-based atlas, was evaluated as a beneficial anatomy-learning tool that may enhance self-study of nursing students with consequent amelioration of their anatomy-related performance in both theoretical and laboratory examinations. This reflection suggests the future implementation of the bilingual web-based atlas on a large scale.

The aim of this study is to determine the factors affecting blue-collar workers' intention to use a web-based learning system in the preimplementation phase in the automotive industry. For that purpose an extended technology acceptance model (TAM) is proposed, which included factors such as image, perceived content quality, and perceived system quality as additions to the basic model. Data collected from 546 blue-collar workers were used to test the proposed research model by using Linear Structural Relations software LISREL, Version 8.54. The findings of the study indicate that perceived usefulness is the strongest predictor of behavioral intention to use a web-based learning system. In addition, a high proportion of perceived usefulness is explained by perceived content quality, and perceived ease of use is explained by perceived system quality and anxiety. PharmaMemory: an interactive, animated web application for learning autonomic physiology and pharmacology

Medical students face challenging but important topics they must learn in short periods of time, such as autonomic pharmacology. Autonomic pharmacology is difficult in that it requires students to synthesize detailed anatomy, physiology, clinical reasoning, and pharmacology. The subject poses a challenge to learn as it is often introduced early in medical school curricula. To ease the difficulty of learning autonomic pharmacology, we created a free web application, PharmaMemory (***), that interactively depicts the effects of high-yield autonomic drugs on the human body. PharmaMemory provides users with the opportunity to read and quiz themselves on the mechanisms, side effects, indications, and contraindications of these drugs while interacting with the application. We provided PharmaMemory to first-year medical students for three consecutive years of quality improvement and assessed the application's perceived effects on learning via user surveys. Survey feedback showed that users viewed PharmaMemory favorably and self-reported increased knowledge and confidence in the subject of autonomic pharmacology. Comments revealed that users liked the website's visuals, opportunity for challenged recall, and conciseness. PharmaMemory utilizes challenged recall, visual stimulation, and interactive learning to provide users with a multifaceted learning tool. Preliminary data suggest that students find this method of learning beneficial. Further studies are needed to assess PharmaMemory compared with more traditional learning methods such as PowerPoint or text-based learning. Additionally, further research is needed to quantitatively assess reduction in cognitive load.
