Automated composition and execution of web-based simulation systems through knowledge designing and reasoning

Modeling and simulation (M&S) techniques can be used to improve cooperation among participants by clarifying the various design aspects of a devised system. Whenever an M&S system with specific functions is required, redesigning it from scratch is time and resource intensive. Thus, an approach to reuse or reconfigure existing systems with functions similar to the required ones is a potential alternative to overcome such problems. This paper proposes a method to build composite systems providing specific M&S functions through the web. The method proposed herein offers an integrated process that includes web-based reuse of existing systems, analysis of the requirements of a composite system, derivation of the logical execution order of element systems, and interconnection of the input-output interfaces between linked constituent systems. This approach provides the required tools by dynamically reconfiguring the element systems at the requested locations. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed procedure can provide automatic generation of the required M&S system (e.g., missile-interception simulation system) and deliver the system to the target location of the cooperative work through the web.

A web-based simulation Game for Teaching Supply Chain Management

Supply chain management (SCM) is a complex business discipline because it combines the concepts of forecasting, inventory management, logistics and distribution, vertical and horizontal integration, and global issues. This complexity creates a challenge when teaching the concepts to both undergraduate and graduate students. A web-based computer simulation can be very useful in helping students to grasp the difficult concepts. It helps students to think systematically and logically as they progress through scenarios with uncertainties and complexity. This article provides detailed implementation protocols for using a web-based SCM game including game descriptions, classroom pedagogy, and simulation assessment. Recommendations are also provided based on the instructor’s experience. © The Author(s) 2019.

What should be included in web-based simulation for new nurses?

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate newly graduated nurses' educational needs for web-based simulation (WBS) education. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 132 registered nurses, regardless of their career length, working at a hospital in Korea. Data accrued through a self-reported questionnaire asking nurses about their educational needs. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test ANOVA, and Scheffe test. Results: Almost all (96.2%) participants said that new nurses need simulation training, and 90.2% of participants said WBS is necessary. The highest ranked category was fundamental nursing knowledge, followed by fundamental nursing technique. Among 81 items of nursing education needs, top ranked items were cardiopulmonary resuscitation, care of artificial airways, oxygen therapy, and mechanical ventilation, which were mostly in the fundamental-nursing-techniques category. Educational needs significantly differed depending on participants' clinical experience (F = 5.37;p = .006), hospital types (t = -3.48;p = .001), and past experiences as a preceptor (t = 2.71;p = .008). Participants with 4 to 6 years of clinical experience, working in a hospital with more than 300 beds, and with experience as a preceptor, answered that new nurses have high educational needs WBS. Conclusions: WBS for new nurses should include fundamental nursing knowledge and techniques that can apply to clinical practice immediately after learning. Also, emergency nursing care should be included to prioritize adequately and cope with emergency situations. The use of WBS will help new nurses learn and adapt to the clinical setting, which can assist nurses in providing optimal care to patients with confidence.

With the growing importance of distance education comes an increasing demand for web-based tools for analysis and simulation of mechanisms. Current commercial and non-commercial software for simulating mechanisms is usually desktop-based and not web-enabled (GrafiCalc, Linkage, SAM, WinMeCC). With the intention of filling this gap, the fundamentals for webbased analysis and simulation of planar mechanisms are discussed and presented here first. Of particular importance is a compact, redundancy-free data structure for describing a mechanism together with its pleasing visualization. The suitability of directed graphs is presented as well as an advantageous restriction to four basic vector types.

To fully utilize local traffic evacuation simulation models for emergency management, in this paper, a web-based simulation system for traffic evacuation is developed. The system takes advantages of the combination of ontological representation and web service techniques. The system can provide customized task configuration and real time results visualization for geographically disperse emergency managers. based on standard interfaces and service delivery, the system can also have capability to execute micro simulation automatically and even share calculated results with other models to perform further integrate analysis or application. Application case demonstrated that the system has significance on decision analysis for traffic evacuation management.

Effectiveness of a web-based simulation in Improving Nurses' Workplace Practice With Deteriorating Ward Patients: A Pre- and Postintervention Study

Background: Nurses play an important role in detecting patients with clinical deterioration. However, the problem of nurses failing to trigger deteriorating ward patients still persists despite the implementation of a patient safety initiative, the Rapid Response System. A web-based simulation was developed to enhance nurses' role in recognizing and responding to deteriorating patients. While studies have evaluated the effectiveness of the web-based simulation on nurses' clinical performance in a simulated environment, no study has examined its impact on nurses' actual practice in the clinical setting. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of web-based simulation on nurses' recognition of and response to deteriorating patients in clinical settings. The outcomes were measured across all levels of Kirkpatrick's 4-level evaluation model with clinical outcome on triggering rates of deteriorating patients as the primary outcome measure. Methods: A before-and-after study was conducted on two general wards at an acute care tertiary hospital over a 14-month period. All nurses from the two study wards who undertook the web-based simulation as part of their continuing nursing education were invited to complete questionnaires at various time points to measure their motivational reaction, knowledge, and perceived transfer of learning. Clinical records on cases triggered by ward nurses from the two study wards were evaluated for frequency and types of triggers over a period of 6 months pre- and 6 months postintervention. Results: The number of deteriorating patients triggered by ward nurses in a medical general ward increased significantly (P<.001) from pre- (84/937, 8.96%) to postintervention (91/624, 14.58%). The nurses reported positively on the transfer of learning (mean 3.89, SD 0.49) from the web-based simulation to clinical practice. Objective: The objective of this article was to review the literature on utilisation and place of web-based simulation within nursing education. web-based simulation combines electronic multimedia options with a central video or virtual world to produce interactive learning activities mediated by the learner. Design: An integrative review. Data sources: A search was conducted of healthcare databases between 2000 and 2014 and of Internet sources for hosted simulation programs in nursing. Eighteen primary programs were identified for inclusion. Review methods: A strategy for integrative review was adopted in which studies were identified, filtered, classified, analysed and compared. Results and discussion: Of 18 programs, two game-based programs were identified which represented a 'virtual world' in which students could simultaneously or individually immerse themselves in a character role-play. However, most programs (n = 10) taught an aspect of procedural patient care using multimedia (e.g. video, audio, graphics, quiz, text, memo). Time-limited sequences, feedback and reflective activities were often incorporated. Other studies (n = 8) taught interpersonal communication skills or technical skills for equipment use. Descriptive study outcomes indicated ease of program use, strong satisfaction with learning and appreciation of program accessibility. Additionally, four studies reported significant improvements in knowledge post-intervention. Conclusion: web-based simulation is highly acceptable to students and appears to provide learning benefits that align with other simulation approaches and it augments face-to-face teaching. web-based simulation is likely to have a major place in nursing curricula in the next decade, yet further research is necessary to objectively evaluate learner outcomes and to justify its use. Background: Advanced practice nurses (APNs), such as Acute Care Nurse Practitioners and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, work in complex settings. Our aim was to compare Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist students' level of knowledge, attitude, and skills related to managing acutely ill patients between those participating in manikin versus web simulation. Methods: A quasi-experimental pre-post test convenience sample design was used. Graduate nursing students were randomized to manikin or web-based training. Competency was measured by self-assessment and scored by objective evaluators. Results: Manikin group scored greater than web group in post-training observed performance mean scores, 70% versus 63%, p = .02. The manikin group had significantly improved scores on self-assessment of their practice ability after training (47% vs. 75%, p = .001). Conclusions: These results support the role of simulation as a successful application of technology to educate advanced practice nurses. RBFsim - A tool for early planning stage of riverbank filtration systems

Riverbank filtration (RBF) is increasingly being considered an effective method to support the management of water supply and the management of groundwater-river water exchange. Literature, however, provides very limited methods for the initial evaluation of the RBF system. Specifically, initial evaluations need to rely on limited data, be cost-effective, and provide sufficient useful output. The paper provides the development of a tool called RBFsim, designed for the early assessment of flow hydraulics in a riverbank filtration (RBF) scheme during site selection and optimization of well operation. The developed tool allows simplified computation (based on the Analytical Element Method or AEM) of the flow field for single and multiple wells in a 2D homogeneous and isotropic aquifer with uniform flow. The tool superimposes analytical solutions for key RBF quantities such as residence time (the time required for river water to reach the well) and the proportions of water (contributed by the river and groundwater) in the well discharge. These solutions are superimposed on the developed flow field. Additionally, the tool can be used to evaluate the impact of riverbed clogging on the operation of the RBF system. The simplified computation due to AEM and limited data requirements allows the tool to be used in handheld (smartphones) or desktop devices with or without internet connection. RBFsim results are verified by comparing them with results from MODFLOW and MODPATH simulations, which are based on entirely different (finite difference) computational schemes. The obtained results from both these models match within the error margin of less than 5%. Further, the practicality and applicability of RBFsim are illustrated using synthetic and field data. While the tool provides a matching river water contribution ratio with field data, it demonstrates the best-fit residence times primarily for higher well discharge rates.
