Implementing a cost effective and configurable hybrid simulation platform in healthcare education, using wearable and web-based technologies

There are many examples of hybrid simulation models in healthcare education which are designed to simulate specific scenarios. However, there appears to be a need for a cost effective and configurable hybrid simulation platform which can be used by educators of various healthcare disciplines to simulate different scenarios. The purpose of this paper is to develop a proof-of-concept platform that can be easily implemented at little cost and provide flexibility to healthcare instructors to develop a variety of simulation scenarios, and to determine the effectiveness of this platform. Using a standardized patient, a person acting as a patient in a scripted manner, along with wearable and web-based technologies, a congestive heart failure simulation was used as an evaluative exercise for a group of personal support worker students at a Canadian Community College. Personal support workers typically provide care to any person who may require personal assistance with activities of daily living such as feeding, lifting, bathing, skin care and oral hygiene to name a few. Standardized patients are typically used in healthcare education to educate and evaluate soft skills, such as caregiver to patient communication, professionalism, as well as hard skills, such as history taking, examination and diagnostic skills (Rosen in J Crit Care 23:157-166, 2008). Instructor feedback indicated that the platform was easy to use and capable of simulating a large variety of scenarios. Pre and post test results are evidence of initial findings of promise indicating that the platform seemed to be effective in enabling students to meet learning outcomes. Focus group results seem to indicate an increase in student confidence as it relates to their ability to handle a similar scenario in the workplace.

web-based technology provides various online services to virtually all businesses. Almost everything can be completed online, so fewer duties, expenses, and labour costs exist. The article explores the concept of a web-based infrastructure that would enable a variety of medical and hospital procedures to be conducted online using web and networking technology. This platform may be required for the implementation of online medical administration capabilities. This would benefit the management of doctor schedules, the administration of patients, and the maintenance of patient information accessible throughout the facility. Using customized application programming, we developed a web application for managing, communicating, storing, and updating patient data online to handle numerous time-intensive and inconvenient duties. The application's performance is assessed and compared with other similar programming languages. © 2024 IEEE.

In this article, we present a web-based System called M2LADS, which supports the integration and visualization of multimodal data recorded in learning sessions in a MOOC in the form of web-based Dashboards. based on the edBB platform, the multimodal data gathered contains biometric and behavioral signals including electroencephalogram data to measure learners' cognitive attention, heart rate for affective measures, visual attention from the video recordings. Additionally, learners' static background data and their learning performance measures are tracked using LOGCE and MOOC tracking logs respectively, and both are included in the web-based System. M2LADS provides opportunities to capture learners' holistic experience during their interactions with the MOOC, which can in turn be used to improve their learning outcomes through feedback visualizations and interventions, as well as to enhance learning analytics models and improve the open content of the MOOC.

The perioperative period is a significant and stressful experience that may cause negative consequences in children, both in a short-term and long-term perspective. Despite a wide base of evidence stating the importance of adequate preparation to reduce anxiety, improve coping, cooperation and enhance recovery, many children continue to report that they feel unprepared for their perioperative experience. To secure children's right to request and need for preparation, the content, format, and availability of existing programs need to be scrutinized. Preparation programs in perioperative care must change from simply providing information to embracing the importance of children's need to process the information provided in order to learn and understand. Interactive web-based technology can function as a significant resource for preparation of children for perioperative procedures. By changing perspective from children's need for information to their need for learning and by developing preparation programs including adequate educational principles, web-based technology can be used to its fullest advantage as a healthcare learning and preparation resource.

Improving learner engagement in MOOCs using a learning intervention system: A research study in engineering education

The development of web applications is an essential and critical skill for Computer Science Engineers. Nowadays, this is a core subject in the Computer Science Engineering Studies and an increasingly demanded subject in other Engineering Studies. With the aim to facilitate introductory know-how in this area, the University Autonoma of Madrid offers at edX Platform the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC): "Introduction to Development of web Applications". Several studies have emphasised the positive impact of methods, such as the use of continuous feedback, to improve and promote learning persistence and engagement in online courses. We propose a system for periodically providing MOOC learners information about their progress and suggestions about how can they can improve their learner performance based on their achievements and interactions in MOOCs. This system is called Learning Intervention System for edX MOOCs (edX-LIS). To test the intervention strategy on learners' behaviour supported by edX-LIS, a research study was conducted with the learners of the mentioned MOOC. The results obtained from this study have demonstrated that the intervention strategy supported by the edX-LIS has a positive impact on the motivation, persistence and engagement of the learners in the MOOC.

Designing a Novel Digitally Delivered Antiracism Intervention for Mental Health Clinicians: Exploratory Analysis of Acceptability

Background: There is a great need for evidence -based antiracism interventions targeting mental health clinicians to help mitigate mental health disparities in racially and ethnically minoritized groups. Objective: This study provides an exploratory analysis of mental health clinicians' perspectives on the acceptability of a web -based antiracism intervention. Methods: Mental health clinicians were recruited from a single academic medical center through outreach emails. Data were collected through individual 30 -minute semistructured remote video interviews with participants, then recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using content analysis. Results: A total of 12 mental health clinicians completed the study;10 out of 12 (83%) were female candidates. Over half (7/12, 58%) of the respondents desired more robust antiracism training in mental health care. Regarding the web -based antiracism intervention, (8/12, 67%) enjoyed the digitally delivered demo module, (7/12, 58%) of respondents suggested web -based content would be further enhanced with the addition of in -person or online group components. Conclusions: Our results suggest a strong need for additional antiracist training for mental health clinicians. Overall, participants responded favorably to novel web -based delivery methods for an antiracism intervention. These findings provide important support for future development and pilot testing of a large-scale digitally enhanced antiracist curriculum targeting mental health clinicians. Over the past few years, the internet and omni-channel domains have created a new economy that is growing rapidly and shifting the way in which businesses operate due to the influence of technological advancements and innovations. Now customers are embracing technology more than ever, user experience is becoming a crucial factor of the customer journey and remaining competitive in any industry is becoming increasingly difficult due to this. These changes have forced many businesses to rethink their presence, whether this is physically or digitally. In order to gain an understanding of how this should be approached, this paper focuses on demonstrating a critical understanding of innovation theories and concepts, which are utilised to enhance value for business. As well as this, web-based technologies and User Experience (UX) principles will be outlined and applied in order to create an online presence for a prototype supermarket, which will be then be reflected upon against PESTLE factors. Evaluation of eating habits by 7-day food record: web-PC vs. traditional paper format

The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of a web-based 7-day food-record using METADIETA-web link (Meteda s.r.l.) – a professional software used in nutritional practice and research – compared with the traditional paper format. Twenty-six healthy adults of both sexes were recruited in this cross-over study based on the number coming from the sample size calculation, and randomly assigned to start with METADIETA-web or traditional 7-Day Food-Diary. All the 7-day food-diaries were recorded in the Metadieta-software. The System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire was administered to evaluate the participants’ preferences in terms of usability, acceptability, and feasibility. Differences in energy intake, nutrient composition, and SUS between the digital and traditional modalities were evaluated. Energy and nutrients were not significantly different between the two methods with a variation <15%, with alcohol intake showing the strongest relation (0.1% variation). The Interclass Correlation Coefficient showed a grade of consistency between the two methods excellent for alcohol, good for proteins, carbohydrates, and fibre, moderate for energy and saturated fat, and poor for total fat and cholesterol. SUS suggested that the web-based platform was in general well accepted, but highlighted some inconsistencies and complexity compared to the written food diary. The web-based 7-day food-record may allow an accurate and quicker analysis of food timing than conventional approaches, seeming reliable for energy and macronutrient composition, making it a potentially attractive tool for nutritional research. However, the reported inconsistencies and complexity must be considered and addressed.

Childhood obesity is one of the most pressing public health concerns in the United States. Because schools are a critical site to promote wellness and prevent obesity, extensive policy and legislative efforts have focused on school-based food services, nutrition education, physical education, and overall physical activity. Unfortunately, research indicates that most of these policies prove ineffective due to insufficient implementation. A small number of web-based programs have emerged that are designed to support the implementation of school wellness policies. The purpose of the current study is to present and interpret findings from an evaluation of the web-based portion of a program implemented throughout the state of Pennsylvania. In total, 192 registered users completed a survey designed to evaluate their utilization and perceptions of the web-based features of the Health eTools for Schools program. Participants represented the following stakeholder groups: school nurses, teachers, wellness coordinators, administrators, and food service directors. Findings indicate the web-based portion of the Health eTools for Schools program is comprehensive, well-designed, and has the potential to support implementation of school wellness policies geared toward obesity prevention. At present, the web-based features are most effective in providing school nurses with tools and resources to execute their roles related to obesity prevention. Applications supporting other groups such as teachers and food service directors require further development to be equally effective. The number of programs with this focus is likely to increase and further research is needed to address other aspects of these programs as well as their impact on student level outcomes such as eating habits, body mass index, physical activity levels, and physical fitness.

Medical devices are an integral part of healthcare service delivery and they are used for monitoring, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients. Proper utilization of medical devices is important for ensuring the safety of users and patients, reducing downtime, improving the quality of health services and increasing the benefit of financial investment. The aim of this study was to assess the utilization of medical devices and to develop web-based medical equipment management system. Both quantitative and qualitative data has been collected for the study. The data collection was conducted between August 26, 2017 to September 20, 2017 in all the seven government owned teaching hospitals which are found in Addis Ababa and Hawassa cities. On average, each hospital delivered services for more than 3 million populations, and had more than 17 service standards, 330 medical equipment and 500 beds during the research period. Data were collected by observation of available resources, interviewing selected professionals about their services and also through questionnaire which was filled by biomedical engineers and biomedical technicians who assessed the utilization phase of healthcare technology management in the seven hospitals. According to the data collected, more than half (17/31) of the respondents did not know the exact number of medical equipment in their facility and there were only 29% (2/7) of hospitals which had recommended test equipment and workshop space in their facilities and almost all hospitals did not have international standards and guidelines and also service manuals. The percentage of respondents who didn't agree on the availability of reference materials, electrical safety and performance test equipment, sufficient user and maintainer training, sufficient maintenance staff, preventive maintenance schedule for all medical equipment were 74%, 77%, 65%, 54% and 36% respectively.
