Facilitating values awareness through the education of health professionals: Can web based decision making technology help?

Recent events in the health care landscape have focused nursing's collective mind on the role of values in health care delivery. For example, in England, the government has issued a mandate to health educators that places primacy on developing a workforce who prioritise and implement the core values of the National Health Service. In the current environment in which 'values' have become common currency, this paper begins by asking what values are, arguing for greater understanding and recognition of their intrinsic role in driving decisions. It then reports on research carried out in New Zealand exploring the potential of the Values Exchange web based educational technology to promote and facilitate a values aware health workforce. Qualitative thematic analysis from a cohort of pre-registration health professionals revealed new understandings about values through the facilitation of deeper, multi-layered thinking. The unique online space provided a safe pre-registration environment for deliberating complex cases, with students readily identifying advantages for future practice and patients. For lasting and meaningful change to occur, a fundamental shift is required in our understanding of values and how they ultimately impact on the way we individually and collectively deliver care to our patients. The Values Exchange may offer a contemporary and timely vehicle for achieving these goals. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Health Level 7's (HL7's) new standard, FHIR (Fast Health Interoperability Resources), is setting healthcare information technology and medical imaging specifically ablaze with excitement. This paper aims to describe the protocol's advantages in some detail and explore an easy path for those unfamiliar with FHIR to begin learning the standard using free, open-source tools, namely the HL7 application programming interface (HAPI) FHIR server and the SIIM Hackathon Dataset.

Background:Telemedicine is becoming increasingly important in Ecuador, especially in areas such as rural primary healthcare and medical education. Rural telemedicine programs in the country need to be strengthened by means of a technological platform adapted to local surroundings and offering advantages such as access to specialized care, continuing education, and so on, combined with modest investment ***:This present article presents the design of a Telemedicine Platform (TMP) for rural healthcare services in Ecuador and a preliminary technical validation with medical students and *** and Methods:An initial field study was designed to capture the requirements of the TMP. In a second phase, the TMP was validated in an academic environment along three consecutive academic courses. Assessment was by means of user polls and analyzing user interactions as registered automatically by the platform. The TMP was developed using web-based technology and open code ***:One hundred twenty-four students and 6 specialized faculty members participated in the study, conducting a total of 262 teleconsultations of clinical cases and 226 responses, ***:The validation results show that the TMP is a useful communication tool for the documentation and discussion of clinical cases. Moreover, its usage may be recommended as a teaching methodology, to strengthen the skills of medical undergraduates. The results indicate that implementing the system in rural healthcare services in Ecuador would be feasible.

Molecular Property Diagnostic Suite () is a web tool ( http://***) designed to assist the in silico drug discovery attempts towards Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). tool has nine modules which are classified into data library (1-3), data processing (4-5) and data analysis (6-9). Module 1 is a repository of literature and related information available on the Mtb. Module 2 deals with the protein target analysis of the chosen disease area. Module 3 is the compound library consisting of 110.31 million unique molecules generated from public domain databases and custom designed search tools. Module 4 contains tools for chemical file format conversions and 2D to 3D coordinate conversions. Module 5 helps in calculating the molecular descriptors. Module 6 specifically handles QSAR model development tools using descriptors generated in the Module 5. Module 7 integrates the AutoDock Vina algorithm for docking, while module 8 provides screening filters. Module 9 provides the necessary visualization tools for both small and large molecules. The workflow-based open source web portal, 1.0.1 can be a potential enabler for scientists engaged in drug discovery in general and in anti-TB research in particular. SYNOPSIS: A web-based Galaxy tool is developed for assessing therapeutic potential of molecules. is categorized into Data Library, Data Processing and Data Analysis. It can be a potential enabler for scientists engaged in drug discovery in general and in anti-TB research in particular.

Background: With the increasing implementation of web-based, mobile health interventions in clinical trials, it is crucial for researchers to address the security and privacy concerns of patient information according to high ethical standards. The full process of meeting these standards is often made more complicated due to the use of internetbased technology and smartphones for treatment, telecommunication, and data collection;however, this process is not well-documented in the literature. Results: The Smart Heart Trial is a single-arm feasibility study that is currently assessing the effects of a web-based, mobile lifestyle intervention for overweight and obese children and youth with congenital heart disease in Southwestern Ontario. Participants receive telephone counseling regarding nutrition and fitness;and complete goal-setting activities on a web-based application. This paper provides a detailed overview of the challenges the study faced in meeting the high standards of our Research Ethics Board, specifically regarding patient privacy. Conclusion: We outline our solutions, successes, limitations, and lessons learned to inform future similar studies;and model much needed transparency in ensuring high quality security and protection of patient privacy when using web-based and mobile devices for telecommunication and data collection in clinical research.

Telemedicine is becoming increasingly important for medical education in Ecuador. Medical education involves medical practical training supported by Rotating Internship (RI) program at the undergraduate level and the Obligatory Rural Health Service (ORHS) program after obtaining the professional degree. RI and ORHS programs have evidenced the need to develop a direct consultation tool to improve the learning process during the RI stage in hospitals and to access a Continuous Medical Education (CME). This article discusses one experience with the use of a Telemedicine Platform (TP) used by undergraduate students and faculty doctors, testing its viability for its future application in medical training during the RI and ORHS programs. An experimental study with 124 students and 6 faculty doctors, from different medical specialties in the context of a telemedicine elective course, was designed. The use and acceptance of the TP were assessed over three 4-month period using auto-generated records of users' interactions with the platform and questionnaires. The students conducted 262 teleconsultations. The average time to write a student case report was 28.3 +/- 15.0 minutes and the average time to write a faculty response was 11.60 +/- 5.40 minutes. Faculty doctors highlighted the utility of the TP to transfer medical knowledge and to increase practical training during the last study levels. All surveyed students agreed that the TP was useful for their practical training. The experimental study results showed that the TP is a useful tool to be integrated as a practical teaching methodology and its use may be recommended for medical training in the RI program and to increase access to CME in the ORHS program in Ecuador.

In the case of natural disaster, there is a need for an integrated information presentation system. The increasing number of public display could be used as a medium for that system. But currently, public display is developed as a closed system. Where only display owner could post content on it. It needs to move to a more open system that allows people contribution beyond display owner. In this paper, we proposed an interaction flow that could foster posting content activity in a system called DNA (Digital Notice Area). We tried to be similar to posting content activity in the traditional "Public Notice Areas". From our preliminary research, we found that our proposed interaction has a SUS score of 69.25. Which means that it is acceptable but still need improvement.

Assessing implicit cognition among patients lost to follow-up for HIV care: A preliminary study

Objective: While a growing body of research indicates that implicit cognitive processes play an important role in a range of health behaviors, the assessment of these impulsive, associative mental processes among patients living with HIV has received little attention. This preliminary study explored how multidimensional scaling (MDS) could be used to assess implicit cognitive processes among patients lost to follow-up for HIV care and develop interventions to improve their engagement. Method: The sample consisted of 33 patients who were identified as lost to follow up for HIV care at two urban hospitals. Participants were randomly assigned to either the MDS assessment program or control group. All participants underwent measures designed to gauge behavioral change intentions and treatment motivation. Assessment group participants were interviewed to determine their reactions to the assessment program. Results: The MDS assessment program identified cognitive processes and their relationship to treatment-related behaviors among assessment group participants. Assessment group participants reported significantly greater behavior change intentions than those in the control group (p =.02;Cohen’s d = 0.84). Conclusion: MDS shows promise as a tool to identify implicit cognitive processes related to treatment-related behaviors. Assessments based on MDS could serve as the basis for patient-centered clinical interventions designed to improve treatment adherence and HIV care engagement in general. © Houston et al. An Assessment of Hybrid Collaborative Learning in Geography Micro-teaching: A South African Case Study

This paper explores how the implementation of a particular hybrid collaborative learning design (classroom-based and web-based), in Geography micro-teaching, can assist student teachers in the planning and presenting of learner-centred micro-lessons. In this one-shot experimental case study a mixed method approach that involved the gathering and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data was used. Data were collected via questionnaires (n= 15), structured focus group interviews (n= 6), learning journal entries (n= 15) and a comparison of student teachers' teaching and learning activities implemented in micro-lessons over the four-week period. Findings from the study indicate that student teachers view the implementation of hybrid collaborative learning during micro-teaching sessions as a positive learning experience. The hybrid collaborative learning environment in micro-teaching created opportunities and facilitated experiences that developed student teachers' capacity to reflect on their own and fellow students' practices in micro-teaching. Students' micro-lessons posted on " VideoANT" provide evidence that the new learning environment in micro-teaching supports and assists students in the effective planning, design and implementation of learner-centred instruction of Geography micro-lessons.

One of the major challenges related to teaching programming and algorithms to novice students is the time spent on the language's syntax and how their attention is incorrectly focused on the syntax rather than the acquisition of concepts and the development of problem-solving and programming skills. This study focuses on the design and evaluation of a web App (RoBlock) designed for autodidactic learning. It uses Visual Blocks Programming, and contains six interactive modules that cover programming concepts. The solution is presented as virtual scenarios for Mobile Robotics. RoBlock is structured as a multi-layered architecture, delegating tasks and activities to specific software components. It was deployed in a hybrid manner, with the main system of Virtual Scenarios in Heroku as Cloud platform, and the Remote Laboratory sub-system in a local server configured at the laboratory. The GUI is user-friendly, designed for usability and interaction. It presents video-tutorials designed for self-learning. Forty six novice Colombian students, divided in two groups, participated in the study of RoBlock. Experimental group students used RoBlock while control group students used Scratch [1]. They had to work on four modules: Variables, sensors and conditionals, cycles and iterations, and functions. They were evaluated before and after every session. Four experimental indexes were used to measure knowledge appropriation and software impact in every student during the study. In addition, students who worked with RoBlock were asked to fill out a quality assessment survey, which included questions on positive and negative aspects of the tool. The complete study consisted of five hours of experimental interaction, due to time limitations at the institutions that collaborated on the study. The results on all four experimental indexes were satisfactory. The group exposed to RoBlock reported between 15% and 23% improvement in knowledge acquisition through all the modules (Figure 1).
