A case study is presented on the use of web-based technology to transition from a lecture-based delivery system to an online/multimedia technology delivery system at the University of Oklahoma's School of industrial Engineering. Coupling web and multimedia technology with a pyramid approach to a simulation course sequence, the goal is to provide both undergraduate and graduate students with strong simulation skills in both modeling and analysis. web-based technology is used to provide course access to non-traditional students, to re-enforce prerequisite knowledge, and to support learning statistical concepts. The approach has been successful at (i) generating two types of graduates, the simulation modeler and the simulation analyst/consultant, (ii) increasing the retention of non-traditional students (industrial engineering students with full-time jobs and other engineering majors without strong statistical backgrounds), and (iii) graduating two non-traditional students in the School's master's degree program as based on their research in simulation analysis. However, online technologies are not without their disadvantages. While the burden has been eased on student learning and their out-of-class activities, the faculty is now tasked with an increased load of supporting online courses and utilizing web-based technologies both within and outside the classroom.

The availability of a large number of Internet connections creates a new attitude of the users toward society in general and information accessibility and supply in particular. This also includes medical services, especially those that are thriving on measurements such as diagnostic services. Medical laboratories and biometrical departments are suited very well to data/information exchange through web-based technologies. First of all, the location of the actual measurement does not correlate with the location of use of such information (virtual laboratory). Secondly, the time and number of people interested in the data/information obtained are not well defined and vary over time (knowledge factory). So the Internet and web-based technologies are supposed to help out in the order entry, report, and consultation stages of diagnostic services request and provision. Here we describe a pilot study to implement and evaluate such a future-directed tool (i.e, CyberLab from MIPS).

This paper describes a web-based telerobotic system with two basic capabilities: object recognition and incremental or continual learning. Within this context, the present paper investigates the feasibility of applying several distance-based classifiers to remote object recognition tasks. On the other hand, incremental learning enables the system to maintain a representative set of past training examples that are used together with new data to appropriately modify the currently held knowledge. This can constitute a very significant advantage because it allows a system to continually increase its knowledge and accordingly, to enhance its performance in recognition as it learns. And also, because this capability allows to detect an incorrect or anomalous employment of this particular remote system. The performance of the system is evaluated by means of an empirical analysis addressed to assess two competing goals: computing time and recognition accuracy.
