The power of interactively linked hierarchy visualizations

This paper describes an interactive web-based tool for visualizing hierarchical data including the recently developed concept of space-reclaiming icicle plots and several more traditional hierarchy visualizations. The tool provides ways to upload, share, explore, and compare hierarchical data using a multitude of different linked hierarchy visualizations. The current version supports up to eight hierarchy visualizations, focusing on user-friendly interactive navigation by a dynamic graphical user interface with a variety of functions while each visualization is interactive by itself. Moreover, color deficiency issues are taken into account in the tool, further improving the usability for this user group. All of the visualizations can be shown in linked views while typical hierarchy parameters and visual variables can be changed on user demand. The interactive tool makes use of OpenGL and Angular, an industry standard JavaScript platform, and runs in a web browser. We illustrate the usefulness of the visualization tool by applying it to the NCBI taxonomy that consists of more than 300,000 hierarchically organized species while filtering for the tetrapoda subhierarchy as an application example. To further test the usability of the tool we did a performance test with increasing sizes of processed hierarchy datasets and even support a GPU implementation. Also user feedback on the eight visualizations was collected. Finally, we explain implementation details and discuss limitations and scalability issues of the linked visualization techniques.

At Treblinka extermination camp, almost one million of people were killed during the Holocaust. A further 10,000 people are estimated to have been murdered at the nearby labor camp. Since 2007, the Centre of Archaeology of Staffordshire University (UK) has been involved in the study and research of the evidence of these atrocities in order to demonstrate how an archaeological approach to Treblinka has, and will continue to, enhance contemporary discussions about the camps and provide a richer, more accurate record of events. This study focuses on the use of digital 3D technologies and web visualization tools for the analysis of the sites, providing a digital interactive platform, which can be used both by professional users and a public audience. It proposes a pyramidal multi-level and multi-sensor approach - providing a 3D resolution spanning from a few centimetres in the landscape Digital Terrain Model to few millimetres in the layer-by-layer archaeological test trench. A 3D-centered information system for the documentation of a complex restoration intervention

Restoration is becoming a quite complex process: a large number of internal and external variables coexist and may impair it. Among these, the large number of professionals involved and the huge amount of documentation produced can heavily affect the quality of the intervention as well as the possibility to have systemic and informed interventions in the future. In particular, a standardized method for storing restoration data and accessing them is still lacking, and the use of new technologies is still limited and/or not scalable. The paper describes the process of designing and testing an information system (IS) based on three-dimensional (3D) data, aimed to support the restoration of Neptune's Fountain in Bologna. In preparation of the restoration, a major effort was carried out to design and implement a web-based IS able to host all of the data produced, to allow the conservation-restoration specialists to interact on-site with an accurate 3D representation of the elements of the fountain, and to directly reference all information and data produced on the geometry of the model. The paper focuses on the challenges and adopted solutions related to the use of 3D models and the data mapping on 3D surfaces in the context of restoration documentation. Highly detailed visualizations of the models, easy navigation, and usable functionalities to add information directly on the 3D model have been achieved by extending the available solutions and by implementing new mechanisms to overcome the limitations of webGL and remote rendering. Neptune IS' development has been extensively experimented in a real context of use. Results and knowledge from the experimentation currently represents the basis for evolving Neptune IS into a possible generic and flexible platform for documentation management in the field of restoration and related methodologies. In collaborative design and distributed manufacturing, the need to co-develop parts by designers at different geographical locations often arises. For designing a promising product, there is always a need for collaboration among the design, marketing, finance and procurement departments, and the top management. Global manufacturing makes it difficult to frequently gather all the departments in a meeting room to discuss, because of geographical constraints. In order to address this issue, recently, a number of software tools and research works have arisen to provide collaborative solutions. In this paper, some important works in web-based visualization and 3D concise representations, 3D streaming technology and co-design systems and feature-/assembly-based representationare elaborated. visualization is a powerful tool for analyzing data and presenting results in science, engineering and medicine. This paper reviews ways in which it can be used in distributed and/or collaborative environments. Distributed visualization addresses a number of resource allocation problems, including the location of processing close to data for the minimization of data traffic. The advent of the Grid Computing paradigm and the link to web Services provides fresh challenges and opportunities for distributed visualization-including the close coupling of simulations and visualizations in a steering environment. Recent developments in collaboration have seen the growth of specialized facilities (such as Access Grid) which have supplemented traditional desktop video conferencing using the Internet and multicast communications. Collaboration allows multiple users-possibly at remote sites-to take part in the visualization process at levels which range from the viewing of images to the shared control of the visualization methods. In this review, we present a model framework for distributed and collaborative visualization and assess a selection of visualization systems and frameworks for their use in a distributed or collaborative environment. We also discuss some examples of enabling technology and review recent work from research projects in this field.

Current 3D data capturing as implemented on for example airborne or mobile laser scanning systems is able to efficiently sample the surface of a city by billions of unselective points during one working day. What is still difficult is to extract and visualize meaningful information hidden in these point clouds with the same efficiency. This is where the FP7 IQmulus project enters the scene. IQmulus is an interactive facility for processing and visualizing big spatial data. In this study the potential of IQmulus is demonstrated on a laser mobile mapping point cloud of 1 billion points sampling similar to 10 km of street environment in Toulouse, France. After the data is uploaded to the IQmulus Hadoop Distributed File System, a workflow is defined by the user consisting of retiling the data followed by a PCA driven local dimensionality analysis, which runs efficiently on the IQmulus cloud facility using a Spark implementation. Points scattering in 3 directions are clustered in the tree class, and are separated next into individual trees. Five hours of processing at the 12 node computing cluster results in the automatic identification of 4000+ urban trees. visualization of the results in the IQmulus fat client helps users to appreciate the results, and developers to identify remaining flaws in the processing workflow.

We present an in situ visualization framework to capture comprehensive details of vortex dynamics in superconductor simulations. Vortices, which determine all electromagnetic properties of type-II superconductors, are extracted and tracked at the same time with GPU-based time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau superconductor simulations. The in situ workflow involves three parts: (1) a tightly coupled GPU-accelerated algorithm that detects primitives for ambiguity-free vortex tracking, (2) a loosely coupled task-parallel feature-tracking method, and (3) a web-based remote visualization tool for vortex dynamics analysis. Our design minimizes the data movement and storage, maximizes the resource utilization, and reduces the slowdown of the simulation. Our solution captures all vortex dynamics in the simulation, previously impossible with traditional post hoc methods. We also demonstrate in situ visualization cases that help scientists understand how vortices cut each other and recombine into new vortices, which are directly related to energy dissipation of superconducting materials.

In this paper we present an approach to compute arbitrarily sized meshes of large scale environments. The meshes can be reconstructed from laser-scanned point clouds or existing high-resolution meshes. The algorithm automatically builds a level of detail hierarchy in the Cesium 3D Tiles format using an octree partition. The main contribution of this paper is a method that ensures that the generated meshes for each level-of-detail stage are computed in a consistent manner to minimize visual artifacts between different detail levels during rendering. Furthermore, both the reconstruction and simplification algorithm are designed to constrain the memory consumption, which enables to process even very large data sets on consumer-grade hardware. The export into the Cesium 3D Tiles format allows to render such large meshes efficiently in all web-based viewers that support this format. In our experiments we evaluate the method on different datasets and assess the visual quality during the rendering process and analyze the memory footprint as well as the runtime behaviour.

The Trans Jogja Bus system is an essential urban transportation service in Yogyakarta and its surrounding areas. With numerous bus stops strategically located throughout the Yogyakarta Urban Area, it aims to provide convenient boarding and disembarkation points for passengers. To improve the commuting experience for passengers, it is crucial to ensure that the Trans Jogja shelters are easily accessible and equipped with a comprehensive range of amenities, covering all regions within the urban area. To evaluate the service level of Trans Jogja Bus stops, the service area from each bus stop is modeled as an interactive isochronous service area map. These maps depict the coverage area of each bus stop based on network analysis, considering travel time to the road network. Each bus stop is a single node with four distinct travel time values: 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 minutes. By employing this interactive modeling approach, the service areas of Trans Jogja bus stops can be presented, along with other variables representing the population in and around these bus stops. The resulting interactive visualization of these isochrone maps showcases the spatial distribution of the bus stop locations and their respective service areas at each travel time interval. This web-based visualization represents the coverage provided by the Trans Jogja bus system across the Yogyakarta urban area. The service area modeling using isochronous service area maps a comprehensive overview of the services offered by Trans Jogja bus stops in Yogyakarta, giving a clear depiction of the accessible amenities around each bus stops. It supports efforts to optimize service accessibility and quality, ensuring a seamless and efficient transportation experience for passengers.
