PurposeIn an era overshadowed by the alarming consequences of climate change and the escalating peril of recurring floods for communities worldwide, the significance of proficient disaster risk management has reached unprecedented levels. The successful implementation of disaster risk management necessitates the ability to make informed decisions. To this end, the utilization of three-dimensional (3D) visualization and web-based rendering offers decision-makers the opportunity to engage with interactive data representations. This study aims to focus on Thiruvananthapuram, India, where the analysis of flooding caused by the Karamana River aims to furnish valuable insights for facilitating well-informed decision-making in the realm of disaster ***/methodology/approachThis work introduces a systematic procedure for evaluating the influence of flooding on 3D building models through the utilization of web-based visualization and rendering techniques. To ensure precision, aerial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data is used to generate accurate 3D building models in CityGML format, adhering to the standards set by the Open Geospatial Consortium. By using one-meter digital elevation models derived from LiDAR data, flood simulations are conducted to analyze flow patterns at different discharge levels. The integration of 3D building maps with geographic information system (GIS)-based vector maps and a flood risk map enables the assessment of the extent of inundation. This paper describes the design and implementation of an interactive web-based geospatial and acoustic visualization interface for the Atlantic Deepwater Ecosystem Observatory Network (ADEON) project. An array of hydrophones deployed along the U.S. Mid- and South Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf collected four years of acoustic measurements. The overwhelming size of the resulting datasets (over 73 terabytes) poses an accessibility problem for researchers and the public. A web-based visualization interface was developed to allow anyone to easily explore the massive datasets generated by the project in order to gain insight about the ecology and soundscape of the region.

This paper discusses a variety of next-generation data products for marine navigation, many of which are encompassed by existing or planned S-100 standards developed by the International Hydrograph Organization. This includes electronic charts, bathymetric surfaces, shoreline lidar, and marine traffic and infrastructure features extracted from textual publications. A web-based visualization interface is presented, which demonstrates how these different data sources can be integrated together to support safer marine navigation, illustrate sailing directions, and aid efficient voyage planning.

One of the most significant consequences of the introduction of digital 3D modeling in the Cultural Heritage field is the possibility to use 3D models as highly effective and intuitive means of communication as well as interface to share and visualize information collected in databases. Due to the usual complexity of architectural and archaeological artifacts or sites, their digital models need be subdivided in sub-components and organized following semantic definitions in order to facilitate data retrieval. This paper outlines a methodology to semantically segment complex reality-based 3D models, annotate information and share the results within online open-source tools. The segmentation stage to subdivide and organize 3D models is based on both automated and manual methods, giving priority to automated procedures that can ease and speed these steps but not neglecting the user intervention to achieve accurate results. The segmented 3D models are then visualized in web-based systems to allow data access to a wider range of users and enlarge knowledge. The methodology is presented and tested on large and complex reality-based 3D models of architectural and archaeological heritage structures.

Preventing mortality in intensive care units (ICUs) has been a top priority in American hospitals. Predictive modeling has been shown to be effective in prediction of mortality based upon data from patients' past medical histories from electronic health records (EHRs). Furthermore, visualization of timeline events is imperative in the ICU setting in order to quickly identify trends in patient histories that may lead to mortality. With the increasing adoption of EHRs, a wealth of medical data is becoming increasingly available for secondary uses such as data exploration and predictive modeling. While data exploration and predictive modeling are useful for finding risk factors in ICU patients, the process is time consuming and requires a high level of computer programming ability. We propose explICU, a web service that hosts EHR data, displays timelines of patient events based upon user-specified preferences, performs predictive modeling in the back end, and displays results to the user via intuitive, interactive visualizations.

We introduce the web-based simulation and visualization tool webdemo, designed for supplementing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses in higher education with interactive examples. The flexible simulation system supports a great variety of visualizations and mathematical operations. To ensure open access, the web front end does neither require additional software nor user registration and can be viewed on every device capable of web browsing. The creation of a new webdemo based on the presented framework is simple and the reuse of templates guarantees a uniform and extensible user interface. A user survey confirms that students appreciate the webdemos as a valuable enrichment of lectures.

The tremendous improvements in data capturing technologies and in the related processing methodologies are opening more and more possibilities in different fields of applications. In particular the Cultural Heritage field is taking great advantages from the latest reality-based 3D modelling developments. One of the most significant consequences of the introduction of digital 3D modelling in the heritage field is the great opportunity of using 3D models as highly effective and intuitive means of communication or as interfaces to share and visualize information collected e.g. in databases. Unstructured 3D data recorded with photogrammetry or laser scanning techniques are generally converted in polygonal textured 3D models, subdivided and organized using automated and manual methods and finally visualized using web-based tools in order to allow remote access and data retrieval to a wider range of users, with evident advantages in enlarging knowledge and education. The paper presents the state-of-the-art in 3D surveying and modelling, segmentation and web-based access for heritage sites and objects (Fig. 1). The most reliable and practical approaches are presented with references and best practices. Some future perspectives are also addressed.

There is a rapidly growing, cross-domain demand for interactive, high-quality visualization techniques as components of web-based applications and systems. In this context, a key question is how visualization services can be designed, implemented, and operated based on Software-as-a-Service as software delivery model. In this paper, we present concepts and design of a SaaS framework and API of visualization techniques for tree-structured data, called HiVISER. Using representational state transfer (REST). the API supports different data formats, data manipulations, visualization techniques, and output formats. In particular, the API defines base resource types for all components required to create an image or a virtual scene of a hierarchy visualization. We provide a treemap visualization service as prototypical implementation for which subtypes of the proposed API resourceshave been created. The approach generally serves as a blue-print for fully web-based, high-end visualization services running on thin clients in a standard browser environment.

GPU-based remote visualization of dynamic molecular data on the web

visualization of dynamic data from molecular dynamics simulations is crucial for understanding the functioning of molecules. Many existing visualization tools have mainly focused on supporting a single user working on a desktop computer. Technical advancements in browser features increase the potential for the development of web-based collaborative visualization tools. Although web-based molecular viewers already exist, their support for dynamic molecular data at interactive rates is lacking. To address this gap, we present an efficient web application for visualization of dynamic molecular data using webGL that exploits HTML5 technologies like webSockets and web Workers. GPU-based ray casting techniques offer fast rendering times and produce images with higher visual quality. Efficient data encoding techniques are used to minimize the data transferred to the client;therefore saving bandwidth and improving the transfer times. We demonstrate the feasibility of visualizing large dynamic molecular data with more than one million atoms in the browser at interactive frame rates. Our approach allows scientists at arbitrary locations to concurrently visually analyze the same data. The interactive parameterization of the visualization can be shared among multiple clients, providing the basis for collaborative research. Moreover, the application can be employed for remote simulation monitoring on mobile devices. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
