The case describes the development and implementation of a webbased application to manage the collection and analysis of business performance data in the tourism industry. The case initially focuses on challenges with the Industry Performance Analyser for Tourism (IPAT) and how this knowledge about past and potential systems failure was used when designing a new system. Attention to this part of the case will help build skills in describing logical specifications for information systems. The case is then concerned with project management challenges faced by the organisation when key people leave the project and a new management team is formed. The reader may be able to articulate strategies which enable information technology projects to become less dependent on the tacit knowledge of individuals or groups.

Most of new information systems development is now being undertaken with web-based architectures. The objective of this study is to identify and assess the relative importance of the required features for methodologies used to develop web-based information systems. Critical success factors (CSFs) for the development of web-based applications were identified from the literature and organized into a hierarchy consisting of their dimensions and sub-dimensions. The relative importance of the dimensions was assessed through an analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method based on data obtained in Korea from IT professionals. Information properties and risk control were found to be the two main dimensions. Within information properties dimension, integrity of information was found to be the most important sub-dimension. In many webapplications, such as the distance learning, the frequency of refreshing multimedia web documents places a heavy burden on the WWW resources. Moreover, the updated web documents may encounter inordinate delays, which make it difficult to retrieve web documents in time. Here, we present an Internet tool called webCAP that can schedule the retrieval of multimedia web documents in time while considering the workloads on the WWW resources by applying capacity planning techniques. We have modeled a multimedia web document as a 4-level hierarchy (object, operation, timing, and precedence.) The transformations between levels are performed automatically, followed by the application of Bellman-Ford's algorithm on the precedence graph to schedule all operations (fetch, transmit, process, and render) while satisfying the in time retrieval and all workload resources constraints. Our results demonstrate how effective webCAP is in scheduling the refreshing of multimedia web documents.

Fast and easy access to all relevant data is of most importance in medical diagnostics and therapy. Electronic patient records can fulfil these requirements much better than common paper-based records. This article describes the TBase2 system, an example of such an electronic patient record. It was developed in close cooperation with the Department of Nephrology at the university hospital Charite in Berlin. Due to its flexibility TBase2 can easily be adapted to the demands of other departments. Beside supporting the daily care for patients, TBase2 also gathers detailed data of high validity ideally suited for medical research.

This paper describes a framework for applying templates to applications and documents on the web. The primary motivation is the need of web application developers to separate program logic from presentation logic. A template is a prototypical document or part thereof. It consists of content in the target language, HTML, XML, or plain text, plus markup specifying variable parts of the document. The Template Markup Language (TML) is an application of XML which defines a generic and flexible set of template markup elements. TRiX (Template Resolution in XML/HTML) is a framework for processing TML. It excels in being highly extensible - both in the types of values variables can take, variables being URLs, and in the set of template elements recognized.
