Dental undergraduate expectations and opinions of web-based courseware to supplement traditional teaching methods

The rapid growth of Internet for the delivery of information has enabled teaching materials to be placed on websites allowing student access to course material. It is the aim of this paper to evaluate a cohort of dental undergraduate students who have used web-based courseware in prosthetic dentistry for a seme-ster. A questionnaire was distributed to clinical undergraduate students prior to the use of the prosthetics course to determine their experience of using the World Wide web (WWW) and their expectations of an online course. A second questionnaire was distributed at the end of 6 months which asked about their usage and opinions of the prosthetics web-based courseware. The main concerns raised at the beginning of the course were related to computer access, the ability to use computers, the time involved and their conception that the e-course would be an additional burden. The main potential benefits were perceived to be convenience, availability of information and the ability to reinforce or catch up on aspects of the module they did not understand or had missed. Feedback at the end of the year showed that most students had accessed the web-based courseware site at least once a month and, generally, their comments were favourable, dispelling some of the initial per-ceived fears. They felt that the website was a quick and con-venient way to access information and was a good additional resource. Access to the site and printing information were the main problems raised by the students who had to use a shared cluster. In conclusion, web-based courseware was felt to be a useful additional resource for students. However, this research showed that sufficient computers and printers must be available for such a resource to become an integrated part of the dental course. © Blackwell Munksgaard, 2003.

We also discuss the results of a study that we conducted using this courseware. In the study, we measured whether the interactive feature included in the courseware influenced student performance and whether student learning styles were a factor. No significant differences were found. A redesigned, more tightly controlled experiment is planned to more definitively answer this question.

This research was conducted to develop and evaluate a prototype of web-based Basic French courseware (EASIFRENCH) for Basic French subject at diploma level. It also engaged of web applications that offer various facilities in providing interactive, effective and innovative learning environment. This research also evaluates some features of Basic French courseware such as pedagogical approach, learning strategies, theories in education and effectiveness usage test in term of achievement towards the application of Basic French courseware in teaching and learning compared to conventional way. The research methodology applied waspra and post quasi-experimental for balanced groups. The samples for the study were 4 Subject Experts, 56 students and 3 lecturers from UniKL Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI). The students were divided into two groups where 28 students use the web - based Basic French courseware (treatment group) and 28 students learn Basic French in conventional way (controlled group). In this study, 7 instruments were used to interpret the research problems, needs analysis, courseware evaluation through formative and summative assessments. The findings were analyzed by using SPSS version 11.5 and descriptive and inferential statistics were applied. Findingsoftheresearchfoundthattheexperimentgroup (R) thatunderwenttheteachingandlearningprocessusingthe Basic French Software (EASIFRENCH) had a higherachievementlevelascomparedtothecontrolledgroup(K)thatfollowedtheconventionaalapproachtoteachinganglear ning. The introduction of the new technologies of computer networks and hypermedia systems in education seems promising. However, only through experimentation can the effectiveness of these technologies be demonstrated. This was the main objective of the EONT project, in the process of which the National Technical University of Athens adapted an introductory course in Software Engineering to a novel enriched instructional delivery mode. The existing course material was supplemented by web-based courseware, integrated into a web-based novel networked learning environment. In this article we report on the results of our research and development, concerning this particular course, and discuss the results that were obtained from our evaluation study. An ability to solve complex problems, for which a variety of solution paths are possible, is an important goal in engineering education. While feedback is critical to learning, hand grading of homework rarely provides effective, timely feedback on attempts to solve complex problems. Such feedback is also unfeasible in distance education contexts. A technology, based on the approach of cognitive tutors, is presented as a generally applicable method of providing automated feedback on complex problem solving, with truss problems studied in engineering as an example. The tutor maintains a cognitive model of problem solving for this class of problems, and associates various solution steps with distinct skills or knowledge components. One can determine whether students learn individual skills by measuring the error rate as a function of practice. Prior work has shown that for many skills the error rate indeed decreases with practice. New insight into the tutor's effectiveness, pertaining to the efficiency of student solution paths, is presented in this paper. While no explicit feedback is given regarding solution efficiency, it is found that students using the tutor become more efficient with practice. Furthermore, more efficient paths are found to be associated with making fewer errors. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Engineering instructors seek to gauge the effectiveness of their instruction. One gauge has been to use standardized tests, such as concept inventories and to quantify learning as the change in score over the semester. Here we question whether that approach is always the best practice for gauging the effect of instruction, and we propose an alternative of administering different tests at the start and end of the semester. In particular, to gauge the influence of one aspect of instruction, the use of interactive web-based course materials that had been developed for Statics, we administered the Force Concept Inventory at the start of the course, and the Statics Concept Inventory at the end of the course. Correlations and then linear regression were applied to study how conceptual knowledge measured at the end of the course depended on conceptual knowledge measured at the start and the amount of use of the web-based courseware. Usage of the web-based courseware was found to promote conceptual knowledge at the end of the course in a statistically significant way only after accounting for initial knowledge as judged by the different conceptual test administered at the start of the course. Thus, it is not necessary to measure gain on one test;instead each test should capture well the variation in relevant ability across students at the time the test is administered.

Rapid development of E-Learning applications brings large requirements of learning resources, especially web-based courseware. However, the high technical requirement of courseware developers, and low reusability of learning resources heavily impede the process of courseware development. There is an urgent need for courseware authoring system to assist teachers who have no professional knowledge of computer technology to develop standard and reusable web-based coursewares. In this paper we presented such a tool named standard visual courseware authoring tool based content packaging specification. This authoring system has two major features. One is providing visual courseware organization, which achieves the aim that "What you see is what you get". The other one is standardization function based on content Packaging specification for coursewares and inner learning resources. This authoring tool provides a standard way for web-based courseware development.
