Medical Morphology Training Using the Xuexi Tong Platform During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Development and Validation of a web-based teaching Approach

Background: Histology and Embryology and Pathology are two important basic medical morphology courses for studying human histological structures under healthy and pathological conditions, respectively. There is a natural succession between the two courses. At the beginning of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic suddenly swept the world. During this unusual period, to ensure that medical students would understand and master basic medical knowledge and to lay a solid foundation for future medical bridge courses and professional courses, a web-based medical morphology teaching team, mainly including teachers of courses in Histology and Embryology and Pathology, was established. Objective: This study aimed to explore a new teaching mode of Histology and Embryology and Pathology courses during the COVID-19 pandemic and to illustrate its feasibility and acceptability. Methods: From March to July 2020, our team selected clinical medicine undergraduate students who started their studies in 2018 and 2019 as recipients of web-based teaching. Meanwhile, nursing undergraduate students who started their studies in 2019 and 2020 were selected for traditional offline teaching as the control group. For the web-based teaching, our team used the Xuexi Tong platform as the major platform to realize a new "seven-in-one" teaching method (ie, videos, materials, chapter tests, interactions, homework, live broadcasts, and case analysis/discussion). This new teaching mode involved diverse web-based teaching methods and contents, including flipped classroom, screen-to-screen experimental teaching, a drawing competition, and a writing activity on the theme of "What I Know About COVID-19." When the teaching was about to end, a questionnaire was administered to obtain feedback regarding the teaching performance. Comparison of a web-based teaching Tool and Traditional Didactic Learning for In Vitro Fertilization Patients: A Preliminary Randomized Controlled Trial

Objective: The objective of this prospective RCT was to compare the efficacy of a web-based teaching tool to traditional didactic teaching in IVF patients. Methods: Forty women undergoing their first IVF cycle were randomly allocated to an interactive web-based teaching session or a nurse-led didactic teaching session. The primary outcome measure was participant knowledge regarding the IVF process, risks, and logistics assessed before and after the respective teaching session. Secondary outcomes included patient stress, assessed before and after the respective teaching session, and patient satisfaction, assessed following the respective teaching session and on the day of embryo transfer (following implementation of the teaching protocol). Results: Both groups demonstrated similar and significant improvements in knowledge and stress after exposure to their respective teaching sessions. The web-based group was significantly more satisfied than the didactic teaching group. web-based teaching was also shown to be equally effective for participants of high versus low income and education status for knowledge, stress, and satisfaction. Conclusion: This study provides preliminary support for the use of web-based teaching as an equally effective tool for increasing knowledge and reducing stress compared to traditional didactic teaching in IVF patients, with the added benefit of increased patient satisfaction.

Colleges and universities are cradles of talents with innovative mind, providing many outstanding people to various fields in the society. In recent years, colleges and universities have carried out reforms in teaching philosophy, major setting and content, gaining good results. The reforms allow personnel in colleges and universities to realize their self-fulfillment in various fields and lay a solid intellectual foundation for national economic development. As a totally new teaching model, web-based teaching, which is flexible and intuitive, is built on technologies such as data and Internet. It can change the dull and monotonous model of teaching into vivid ones and arouse students' interests in participating, thinking and exploring, in order to enhance the effectiveness of personnel training in colleges and universities. Starting from the development history of web-based teaching and personnel training, this paper analyzes the opportunities and challenges, which Internet technology and education might confront, and then specifically introduces the existing web-based teaching methods. And finally, based on the web-based teaching, this paper puts forward relevant measures in personnel training in colleges and universities in order to provide more supports for teaching reforms in colleges and universities.

The Effect of web-based Nursing Process teaching on Senior Nursing Students' Care Planning Skills^#

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of web-based nursing process teaching on senior nursing students' care plan preparation skills. METHODS Pretest-posttest intervention design was used. A total of 131 senior nursing students were evaluated for 5 weeks. Data were collected using a datasheet, a nursing care plan (pretest-posttest), and a self-efficacy form. FINDINGS The intervention group had significantly higher data collection, planning stage scores, and a total care plan score than the others. The intervention group was competent in all self-efficacy items, except the one concerning prioritizing nursing diagnoses. CONCLUSIONS web-based nursing process teaching offered with the curriculum helps students to develop care planning skills. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE It is necessary to focus on different teaching methods and using standardized terminology in teaching the nursing process.

Exploring the Educational Value of Popular Culture in web-based Medical Education: Pre-Post Study on teaching Jaundice Using "The Simpsons"

Background: The potential of popular culture as a tool for knowledge delivery and enhancing engagement in education is promising but not extensively studied. Furthermore, concerns exist regarding learning fatigue due to increased reliance on videoconferencing platforms following the COVID-19 pandemic. To ensure effective web-based teaching sessions that maintain attention spans and enhance understanding, innovative solutions are necessary. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the use of specific popular culture case studies to enhance student engagement in a web-based near-peer teaching session. Methods: We delivered a web-based teaching session to undergraduate medical students in the United Kingdom. The session included clinical vignettes and single-best-answer questions using characters from "The Simpsons" television show as patient analogies for various causes of jaundice. A pre-post survey, employing a 7-point Likert scale, was distributed to gather data from participants. Results: A total of 53 survey responses were collected. Participants reported significantly improved understanding of jaundice after the session compared to before the session (median 6, IQR 5-6 vs median 4, IQR 3-4.5;P<.001). The majority of participants agreed that the inclusion of "The Simpsons" characters enhanced their knowledge and made the teaching session more memorable and engaging (memorability: median 6, IQR 5-7;engagement: median 6, IQR 5-7). Conclusions: When appropriately integrated, popular culture can effectively engage students and improve self-perceived knowledge retention. "The Simpsons" characters can be used pedagogically and professionally as patient analogies to deliver teaching on the topic of jaundice.

The construction of online teaching platforms has begun to take shape in China. However, there is little communication and integration among their resources. Through the investigation and analysis of online teaching courses in IT-related majors, this paper reveals several causes of the obstructions in the process of network teaching achievement. In this paper, the author proposes the resource aggregation method to build a higher-level open source network teaching platform based on the existing university web-based teaching platforms, aggregating the intellectual resources and teaching resources, reducing the pressure on teachers who are working individually on the online instructions, mentoring and evaluation on the platforms, and promoting the development of online study and online testing based on the mixed mode of instruction.

An analytical study on the design and implementation of a comprehensive web-based learning environment for Chinese as a foreign language

This paper aims to analyze the design and application of a robust learning environment using Chinese as a foreign language in the context of web-based teaching. The study employs a carefully planned environment with cutting-edge educational technology and pedagogical techniques for comprehensive language and cultural learning. It creates a browser/server (B/S) framework for teaching Chinese as a foreign language, including system structure, logical design, database integration, and operations, respectively. Specific features like the five-tier logical framework spanning representation and business logic levels are elaborated. The research also presents a resource model that optimizes user preferences and knowledge links using an adaptive multi-objective particle swarm optimization technique, resulting in an efficient and effective learning system. Finally, this study proposes a system for teaching and Learning Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL) that uses a client-side browser and a server-side browser. Client-side browser provides access to educational materials. Interaction and navigation by the user lead to content presentation and rendering, which displays text, videos, and interactive features. Data management and retrieval manage user requests and business logic on the server side, drawing from a data repository. The scalability and performance of the proposed TCFL system assure smooth operation, while centralized control and governance manage courses and material. The experimental assessment demonstrates the remarkable performance of the suggested TCFL system across critical criteria. The suggested system outperforms other techniques by achieving outstanding results such as increased learning efficiency of 82.4%, increased user engagement and interaction rates of 87.3%, and tailored adaptability with a customization index of 0.865 and adaptive learning rate of 89.5%. Whether web-based teaching is accepted by the public is worth investigating. Three critical factors to be considered for answering the above question are instructors, web-based teaching platforms, and students. Some instructors have recognized that there is a huge gap between teaching methods for web-based teaching and those for conventional teaching. Furthermore, because many instructors are forced into web-based teaching, they are not very willing to use the web-based teaching platform provided by their school. In this study, the researchers integrated a web-based teaching platform used by instructors of a university into the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) for factor analysis and discussion. The study result demonstrated that factors influencing behavior intention and actual use behavior, e.g., performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions, have their potential impacts. The researchers have also found in the analysis of moderator variables that users' past use experience and the domain they teach at school have stronger impacts. The researchers consider that it is important to enhance the quality as well as the quantity of education and training and to enable the users to understand benefits from the system. By doing so, users' expectation on system performance would be enhanced and thereby it will improve their attitude for actual application and reducing negative impacts from subjective norms.

Financial education is not routinely offered during medical training. Unsurprisingly, physicians have low financial literacy, high debt, and deficits in their financial preparedness which contributes to the ever-growing problems of physician stress, job dissatisfaction, burnout, and depression. This study aims to determine the effects of a standardized personal finance education curriculum on family medicine residents’ and fellows’ financial well-being and literacy. Residents/fellows from 16 family medicine residency programs were selected for participation and divided using Solomon four-group design. A standardized, web-based financial education curriculum entitled “Medical Residency Financial Skills Curriculum to Advance Literacy” (MR. FISCAL) was created by the authors and provided to participants. An anonymous, web-based, survey (N = 222) was collected, consisting of the InCharge Financial Distress/Financial Well-Being (IFDFW) Scale plus demographic and self-reported financial data. There was a significant improvement in the IFDFW score from pre- to post-survey results regardless of the intervention (95% CI 0.105–0.106, P = 0.017). There is currently a paucity of data on financial well-being and literacy among family medicine residents/fellows, as well as a lack of a standardized curricular intervention. The authors believe that this study is an early step in evaluating the effect of a standardized curriculum on personal finance literacy and well-being. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
