This article reiterates on the recently presented hierarchy visualization service HiViSer and its API [51]. It illustrates its decomposition into modular services for data processing and visualization of tree-structured data. The decomposition is aligned to the common structure of visualization pipelines [48] and, in this way, facilitates attribution of the services' capabilities. Suitable base resource types are proposed and their structure and relations as well as a subtyping concept for specifics in hierarchy visualization implementations are detailed. Moreover, state-of-the-art quality standards and techniques for self-documentation and discovery of components are incorporated. As a result, a blueprint for web service design, architecture, modularization, and composition is presented, targeting fundamental visualization tasks of tree-structured data, i.e., gathering, processing, rendering, and provisioning. Finally, the applicability of the service components and the API is evaluated in the context of exemplary applications.

This paper describes an interactive web-based tool for visualizing hierarchical data including the recently developed concept of space-reclaiming icicle plots and several more traditional hierarchy visualizations. The tool provides ways to upload, share, explore, and compare hierarchical data using a multitude of different linked hierarchy visualizations. The current version supports up to 8 hierarchy visualizations, with the space-reclaiming icicle plots among them. Several of the visualizations can be shown in linked views while typical hierarchy parameters and visual variables can be changed on user demand. The interactive tool makes use of OpenGL and Angular, an industry standard JavaScript platform, and runs in a web browser. We illustrate the usefulness of the visualization tool by applying it to the NCBI taxonomy that consists of more than 300,000 hierarchically organized species while filtering for the tetrapoda subhierarchy. Finally, we explain implementation details and discuss limitations and scalability issues of the linked visualization techniques.

GPU-based remote visualization of dynamic molecular data on the web

visualization of dynamic data from molecular dynamics simulations is crucial for understanding the functioning of molecules. Many existing visualization tools have mainly focused on supporting a single user working on a desktop computer. Technical advancements in browser features increase the potential for the development of web-based collaborative visualization tools. Although web-based molecular viewers already exist, their support for dynamic molecular data at interactive rates is lacking. To address this gap, we present an efficient web application for visualization of dynamic molecular data using webGL that exploits HTML5 technologies like webSockets and web Workers. GPU-based ray casting techniques offer fast rendering times and produce images with higher visual quality. Efficient data encoding techniques are used to minimize the data transferred to the client;therefore saving bandwidth and improving the transfer times. We demonstrate the feasibility of visualizing large dynamic molecular data with more than one million atoms in the browser at interactive frame rates. Our approach allows scientists at arbitrary locations to concurrently visually analyze the same data. The interactive parameterization of the visualization can be shared among multiple clients, providing the basis for collaborative research. Moreover, the application can be employed for remote simulation monitoring on mobile devices. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The tremendous improvements in data capturing technologies and in the related processing methodologies are opening more and more possibilities in different fields of applications. In particular the Cultural Heritage field is taking great advantages from the latest reality-based 3D modelling developments. One of the most significant consequences of the introduction of digital 3D modelling in the heritage field is the great opportunity of using 3D models as highly effective and intuitive means of communication or as interfaces to share and visualize information collected e.g. in databases. Unstructured 3D data recorded with photogrammetry or laser scanning techniques are generally converted in polygonal textured 3D models, subdivided and organized using automated and manual methods and finally visualized using web-based tools in order to allow remote access and data retrieval to a wider range of users, with evident advantages in enlarging knowledge and education. The paper presents the state-of-the-art in 3D surveying and modelling, segmentation and web-based access for heritage sites and objects (Fig. 1). The most reliable and practical approaches are presented with references and best practices. Some future perspectives are also addressed.

Analysis of large dynamic networks is a thriving research field, typically relying on 2D graph representations. The advent of affordable head mounted displays sparked new interest in the potential of 3D visualization for immersive network analytics. Nevertheless, most solutions do not scale well with the number of nodes and edges and rely on conventional fly- or walk-through navigation. In this paper, we present a novel approach for the exploration of large dynamic graphs in virtual reality that interweaves two navigation metaphors: overview exploration and immersive detail analysis. We thereby use the potential of state-of-the-art VR headsets, coupled with a web-based 3D rendering engine that supports heterogeneous input modalities to enable ad-hoc immersive network analytics. We validate our approach through a performance evaluation and a case study with experts analyzing medical data.

At Treblinka extermination camp, almost one million of people were killed during the Holocaust. A further 10,000 people are estimated to have been murdered at the nearby labor camp. Since 2007, the Centre of Archaeology of Staffordshire University (UK) has been involved in the study and research of the evidence of these atrocities in order to demonstrate how an archaeological approach to Treblinka has, and will continue to, enhance contemporary discussions about the camps and provide a richer, more accurate record of events. This study focuses on the use of digital 3D technologies and web visualization tools for the analysis of the sites, providing a digital interactive platform, which can be used both by professional users and a public audience. It proposes a pyramidal multi-level and multi-sensor approach - providing a 3D resolution spanning from a few centimetres in the landscape Digital Terrain Model to few millimetres in the layer-by-layer archaeological test trench. A 3D-centered information system for the documentation of a complex restoration intervention

Restoration is becoming a quite complex process: a large number of internal and external variables coexist and may impair it. Among these, the large number of professionals involved and the huge amount of documentation produced can heavily affect the quality of the intervention as well as the possibility to have systemic and informed interventions in the future. In particular, a standardized method for storing restoration data and accessing them is still lacking, and the use of new technologies is still limited and/or not scalable. The paper describes the process of designing and testing an information system (IS) based on three-dimensional (3D) data, aimed to support the restoration of Neptune's Fountain in Bologna. In preparation of the restoration, a major effort was carried out to design and implement a web-based IS able to host all of the data produced, to allow the conservation-restoration specialists to interact on-site with an accurate 3D representation of the elements of the fountain, and to directly reference all information and data produced on the geometry of the model. The paper focuses on the challenges and adopted solutions related to the use of 3D models and the data mapping on 3D surfaces in the context of restoration documentation. Highly detailed visualizations of the models, easy navigation, and usable functionalities to add information directly on the 3D model have been achieved by extending the available solutions and by implementing new mechanisms to overcome the limitations of webGL and remote rendering. Neptune IS' development has been extensively experimented in a real context of use. Results and knowledge from the experimentation currently represents the basis for evolving Neptune IS into a possible generic and flexible platform for documentation management in the field of restoration and related methodologies. This paper presents a strategy of graphical visualization of the community-based Smart and Connected Community (SCC) Health data through novel spatial and temporal plots. Temporal visualization consists of two plots: graph and flow;whereas spatial visualization can be static Google Map overlay or animation over selected timeframe. The visualization uses the disease severity (Events of Interest, EoI) through colors. An arbitrary grid is used with random area code where each grid is represented by rectangles defined by latitude and longitude of that area so that it is impossible to precisely localize the study participants. The major contribution of this work is to exhibit the continuous health status of the community through the cumulative and segmented animation on the spatial plots. To implement this, a web-based dynamic server is utilized. Front end of the server uses JavaScript JQuery and Ajax, whereas backend is managed by Hypertext Preprocessor, i.e. PHP. The phpMyAdmin (administration tool for MySQL) stores the JSON data from smartphone app. Survey result shows that 81.4% participants in pre-session and 84.75% participants in post-session provided positive feedback about the visualization. In this work, the visualization is implemented with mock data.

This article aims to present a web-based interactive visualization and analytical platform for weather data in Armenia by integrating the three existing infrastructures for observational data, numerical weather prediction, and satellite image processing. The weather data used in the platform consists of near-surface atmospheric elements including air temperature, pressure, relative humidity, wind and precipitation. The visualization and analytical platform has been implemented for 2-m surface temperature. The platform gives Armenian State Hydrometeorological and Monitoring Service analytical capabilities to analyze the in-situ observations, model and satellite image data per station and region for a given period.

We present an in situ visualization framework to capture comprehensive details of vortex dynamics in superconductor simulations. Vortices, which determine all electromagnetic properties of type-II superconductors, are extracted and tracked at the same time with GPU-based time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau superconductor simulations. The in situ workflow involves three parts: (1) a tightly coupled GPU-accelerated algorithm that detects primitives for ambiguity-free vortex tracking, (2) a loosely coupled task-parallel feature-tracking method, and (3) a web-based remote visualization tool for vortex dynamics analysis. Our design minimizes the data movement and storage, maximizes the resource utilization, and reduces the slowdown of the simulation. Our solution captures all vortex dynamics in the simulation, previously impossible with traditional post hoc methods. We also demonstrate in situ visualization cases that help scientists understand how vortices cut each other and recombine into new vortices, which are directly related to energy dissipation of superconducting materials.
