Power systems(1) state estimation plays an important role in monitoring transmission systems. With the emergence of smart grid concept, it will be necessary to extend state estimation function to distribution level to ensure the efficient integration of distributed energy resources. Reducing program response time is one of the on-going challenges that electrical researchers are facing to circumvent computational burden, especially since the DC approximation and fast decoupled formulation are no more viable in distribution systems. This paper evaluates the possibilities offered by two variants of the basic weighted least squares algorithm to reduce computation time.

Joint localization algorithm of TDOA and FDOA considering the position error of underwater sensors

The joint localization method of TDOA and FDOA is widely used because it can estimate the underwater moving source well. Usually, a two-step weighted least squares (TSWLS) algorithm is used to estimate the source. However, the noise square term is always neglected in the TSWLS algorithm. In order to improve this situation, an improved TSWLS algorithm is proposed under the circumstance of sensor position inaccuracy. First, a new localization equation is constructed by the time difference equation, and the source position and velocity are initially estimated. The intermediate variables are then Taylor expanded and inserted into the localization equation of the algorithm's first step to modify the initial estimate value. Finally, the source's precise position and velocity are determined, and the proposed method was demonstrated to achieve the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) accuracy through simulations.

Efficient source positioning method based on two stations using GROA and AOA measurements

By utilising the gain ratio of arrival (GROA) and angles of arrival (AOAs), three-dimensional source localisation with only two stations is studied. The weighted least squares (WLS) algorithm yields the typical closed-form solution, which is obtained by first establishing a set of linear equations and then determining the source position. However, the WLS solution exhibits poor performance at high noise levels. Hence, an efficient parameter augmented constraint method is proposed by extending the parameter space. The proposed method minimises the cost function by imposing a quadratic constraint such that the expectation of the cost function will attain its minimum value at the true solution. In addition, the proposed method yields an explicit algebraic solution and does not depend on a good initial guess;thus, there is no convergence problem. Theoretical analysis and simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

An optimal strategy is derived for robust performance of feedforward and feedback noise controllers in active noise control systems with a bounded narrowband disturbance. The designed recursive algorithm updates the weighting factor to make sure that controller updates are performed when the current measurement data contain new information to improve the estimation quality. This significantly reduces the computational complexity by allowing fewer updates in the steady state and persistent updates otherwise. The presented algorithm can guarantee non-increasing and positive-definite covariance matrices for feedforward and feedback filters, and this results in a bounded and non-increasing estimation error. Moreover, the proposed algorithm achieves fast convergence with improved performance in steady-state noise reduction. In simulations, the comparison of the proposed method with the established methods under benchmark conditions demonstrates the improvement in the overall performance.

Nowadays, with the massive integration of distributed renewable generation, electric vehicles... to the distribution level of the electricity grid, the traditional strategy for monitoring distribution systems is no more valid. In fact, Distribution Networks should become observable and controlled in real time in the same way as the transmission systems. Therefore, Distribution System State Estimation (DSSE) represents a relevant research topic to embrace the new conjuncture of Smart Grid, new techniques should be developed to ensure the observability and manage the bidirectional power flows generated by renewable resources. This paper provides a detailed survey of DSSE techniques available in literature: DSSE techniques based on adapting weighted least squares algorithm from transmission to distribution network according to the different state variables developed (Node voltage, Branch current, Branch power....) and DSSE methods based on Evolutionary algorithms (Artificial Neural Network, Fuzzy Logic, Particle Swarm Optimization...) are presented. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed finally, directions for future research arc suggested.

The least squares (LS) and the weighted least squares (WLS) algorithms are well known procedures that are used in the design of quadrature mirror filters (QMFs). It is known that these design techniques suffer from pass-band anomaly under certain conditions. A recent method, that overcomes pass-band anomaly for LS QMFs using a frequency sampling design for the initial filter, is extended to WLS design in this letter. A comparison between the modified LS and WLS designs based on experimental results is presented. Although WLS designs have been reported to have superior near-equiripple stop-band performance as compared to LS designs, we find that this is not always true. Specifically, LS designs, with inherent computational and robustness advantages, also have better peak stop-band ripple and transition bandwidth at higher cut-off frequencies than WLS.

Two major objectives of a binaural microphone array system are reducing background noise and retaining interaural relationships, for example, ILD and ITD. Hence, a new adaptive microphone array signal processing based on a weighted least squares algorithm for binaural hearing is proposed in this paper. Instead of Lagrange's method of indeterminant coefficients, which is often used in conventional binaural microphone array systems, a weighted least squares algorithm is employed. Results of computer simulations carried out for purposes of evaluation showed that the proposed method is characterized by flexible and robust adaptivity to various conditions.

A new type of array signal processing combined with a weighted least squares algorithm to enable two-channel output with binaural information is proposed in this paper. This algorithm may be effective for use in a binaural hearing aid because the interaural relationship can be preserved after array signal processing. Retaining spatial information on specified directions while sufficiently suppressing unnecessary ambient noise coming from directions other than those of target sounds is required for this type of algorithm. In order to satisfy these two simultaneous requirements, the proposed algorithm was derived from a constraint algorithm by employing the weighted least squares algorithm. Performance in directivity patterns as well as interaural time difference (ITD) and interaural level difference (ILD) were evaluated. Computer simulations showed that this algorithm yields robust performance in various conditions compared with array signal processing based on a constraint algorithm. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. The weighted least-squares (WLS) technique has been widely used for the design of digital FIR filters. In the conventional WLS, the filter coefficients are obtained by performing a matrix inverse operation, which needs computation of O(N-3). The authors present a new WLS algorithin that introduces an extra frequency response including implicitly the weight function. In the new algorithm, the filter coefficients can be solved just by a matrix vector multiplication. It reduces the computational complexity from O(N-3) to O(N-2).
