A wide-area distributed application is affected by network failure due to natural disasters because the servers on which the application operates are distributed geographically in a wide area. Failure Injection Testing (FIT) is a method for verifying fault tolerance of widely distributed applications. In this paper, by limiting network failures only to the connection line, whole FIT scenarios are generated, and exhaustive evaluation of fault tolerance is performed. The authors propose a method to omit the evaluations from the aspect of topological constraint conditions. And they evaluate the visualization method of performance data obtained from this evaluation and the reduction of the fault tolerance evaluation cost by the proposed method.

A geographically wide-area distribution is a technique to improve fault tolerance of an information communication technology (ICT) application. Geographically wide-area distributed applications can be affected by network failure due to natural disasters and disasters by human error. Failure Injection Testing (FIT) is a method to verify and evaluate a fault tolerance of a geographically wide-area distributed application. In this paper, the authors propose a system that produces whole FIT scenarios for a wide-area distributed application. Exhaustive evaluations of fault tolerance can show how the scenarios can degrade the application. The authors also propose a probabilistically quantitative evaluation method from the aspect of topological constraint conditions.

Server selection mechanism with pluggable selection policies

Most Internet service providers offer services using multiple servers in order to avoid service congestion. In such environments, problems have arisen in regard to the client not knowing which server to choose. This has led to the need for a server selection mechanism that will automatically select the optimal server. In our paper, we first identify the requirements of a server selection mechanism, and then propose a novel mechanism that provides a satisfactory response to them. The mechanism has an extensive range of usability as a result of being based on a Domain Name system (DNS), and enables a diversity of server selection policies to be integrated with it. These server selection policies also allow decisions to be made based on roundtrip times and other network status parameters. Allowing selection policies to be changed dynamically ensures compatibility with a variety of conditions. We used a prototype system to conduct assessment experiments on a group of widely distributed servers and to show the effectiveness of our server selection mechanism. In this paper, we study the following theoretical scheduling problem: the tasks of a given application have to be statically distributed and executed on the heterogeneous servers of a multi-user system on a wide area, heterogeneous network, such as Internet. The application is divided into a set of communicating tasks that may be executed on at least one, and possibly several, servers. The processing time of each task depends on the server processing it, and the communication delay between two tasks depends on the communicating servers. Task duplication is allowed We propose an efficient algorithm that first uses a PERT-like algorithm to compute the earliest execution dates of each task and then build an optimal static solution for this scheduling problem, with a low number of tasks duplications.

This paper indicates that a scalable fault-tolerant name service can be provided utilizing an overlay network and that such a name service can scale along a number of dimensions: it can be sized to support a large number of clients, it can allow large numbers of concurrent lookups on the same name or sets of names, and it can provide name lookup latencies measured in seconds. Furthermore, it can enable updates to be made pervasively visible in times typically measured in seconds for update rates of up to hundreds per second. We explain how many of these scaling properties for the name service are obtained by reusing some of the same mechanisms that allowed the underlying overlay network to scale. Finally, we observe that the overlay network is sensitive to bandwidth and CPU limitations.
