Ubiquitous computing, known also as internet of things, is often considered as the post internet revolution, where devices are embedded in everyday objects that can communicate and take decision automatically without human intervention. However, in spite of their quick popularity and the maturity of both embedded architectures and computer science programming, designing flexible ubiquitous system remains a complex task especially for beginners. The main objective is to create a flexible platform designed to facilitate the design of embedded systems for ubiquitous applications. This platform is suitable for users with low programming skills. As a proof of concept, the authors choose as ubiquitous system a mobile robot that its functionality can be modified easily by the proposed platform. The compilation of the code corresponding to the new robot functionality is obtained using a distant CLOUD server, the program is compiled there, then loaded to the robot using a wireless programmer. In this paper the authors present the general structure of the designed system, then they go through the different steps to implement the robot compiler in the cloud and test it.

In this paper, a wireless programming scheme based on Freescale sensor chip MPXY8300 was designed aiming at the problem of the maintenance and update of the direct TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) sensor software. The application code of the sensor was coded and modulated through the low frequency of 125 KHz wireless, then transferred to MPXY8300. In order to realize wireless programming, the application code was demodulated, decoded, and written in Flash store with IAP (In Application programming) technology by MPXY8300. The new partition of the User Flash and design of Bootloader were systematically studied. Finally, a kind of simple, reliable and efficient wireless communication protocol was developed. The results show that the wireless programming scheme is effective and efficient by achieving through the soft and hardware. © 2014 WIT Press.

This paper presents a working prototype of a mobile, programmable set of construction kit elements for children. SmartTiles are small, lightweight, independently programmable tile objects that can be combined to cover various sorts of planar surfaces;each touch-sensitive tile contains its own computer and LED, and communicates with its neighboring tiles when placed on an appropriate background material. Collectively, the tiles enact user-customizable cellular automaton programs and thus display complex and fascinating dynamical patterns of light. In this paper, we discuss the implementation of SmartTiles and explore their potential use as an instance of mobile computation for children. We also discuss the way in which the tiles can be programmed wirelessly via a PDA interface, and discuss the implications of this sort of programming for educational computing more generally.

wireless flashing over the air is a challenging task. Appliances are required to update its flash or EEPROM via a remote system update. However, direct connectivity via a wire is not available. Within the application of consumer electronics, such as utility meters or other appliances, there is always a room to update the appliance remotely for optimal operation. In this paper, we present a new system for remotely flashing all models of ATMEL AVR microcontrollers via Wi-Fi and LoRa technologies. Also, we will demonstrate an experimental work to prove our new methodology as well as applying it in industrial scenarios.

In the field of human health, collecting and analyzing real-time data is crucial. Information technology (IT) has the potential to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of healthcare by enabling the service providers and their patients to access the health information. IT allows healthcare providers to collect, store, retrieve, and transfer information electronically. Patients will be able to monitor their own vital signs from their home and communicate the results to their service providers wirelessly. This makes it possible to address a problem before a patient requires acute care and maintain the quality of their life by enabling them to be close to their families and relatives. This paper presents a novel component-based monitoring system (THBR). T-HBR supports a multi-user environment, has a high level of security and has the potential to communicate with a remote server or service robot wirelessly. The experimental results of the system demonstrate the ease of use and high degree of reliability.

Designing intelligent environments is a complex, interdisciplinary process, performed by experts from different domains. These intelligent environments often consist of wireless sensor/actuator nodes that together form a network to achieve certain goals. While there are many prototyping tools and wireless nodes available, there are few that are suitable for use in interdisciplinary projects for people with varying backgrounds. We identify the need for an easy-to-learn platform that provides a smooth integration between soft-and hardware and offers possibilities for wireless networking. In this paper we discuss existing development platforms that are used by designers and identify qualities that are important for the design of intelligent environments. We then present the Lithne platform, consisting of nodes that are user programmable and software packages that facilitate wireless networking. One of the core qualities of the Lithne platform is the possibility to wirelessly program the nodes, allowing designers to develop intelligent environments iteratively in the actual context. Finally, we present cases in which Lithne has been used in the design and implementation of intelligent lighting environments.

The microcontroller based intelligent platform is a combination of technology and methodology developed for mechatronics education and research. Students can use the platform for mechatronics coursework and hands-on experiments not only in the university lab but also at home or whatever place they can imagine. Only an Internet connected computer is needed. At the same way university staff or researchers can run microcontroller based experiments over the web in case of complex algorithms where different sensors and actuators are involved and need to be tested. The paper introduces the methodology and associated technical concept as well as giving closer look to the hardware systems. Experience of applying the platform in Estonia and Germany is shortly summarized in the last chapter.

An Intelligent Implantable wireless Shunting System for Hydrocephalus Patients

Hydrocephalus is a neurological disorder whereby the cerebro-spinal fluid surrounding the brain is improperly drained, causing severe pain and swelling of the head. Existing treatments rely on passive implantable shunts with differential pressure valves;these have many limitations, and life-threatening complications often arise. In addition, the inability of such devices to autonomously and spontaneously adapt to the needs of the patients results in frequent hospital visits and shunt revisions. This paper proposes replacing the passive valve with a mechatronic valve and an intelligent microcontroller that wirelessly communicates with a hand-held device that would have a GUI and an RF interface to communicate with the patient and the implantable shunt respectively. This would deliver a personalised treatment that would aim to eventually reduce or eliminate the shunt dependence. This system would also enable a physician to monitor and modify the treatment parameters wirelessly, thus reducing, if not eliminating, the need for shunt revision operations. To manage the shunt, four methods were investigated, simulated and compared. As a result a method was selected based on performance. This method involves an implantable pressure sensor and intelligent software, which will cooperate in monitoring and determining vital parameters that will help in determining a decision regarding the optimal valve schedule. The decision will be either modifying the schedule or contacting the external device for consultation. Initial results are presented, demonstrating different valve regulation scenarios and the wireless interaction between the external and implanted sub-systems. Also presented are important parameters from the ICP data that would help in optimising system resources. To conclude, an intelligent shunting system is seen as the future in hydrocephalus treatment, potentially reducing significantly hospitalisation periods and shunt revisions.
