Agricultural farming has become increasingly challenging as a result of environmental changes because of the development of pests and diseases that prevent the growth of crops. It's critical to identify any disease early on;before the damaged plants are given the necessary treatment, to guarantee the crops grow healthily and properly. It makes sense to have an automated system because manual disease detection requires a lot of time and labor. wireless visual sensor network has become an important aspect of the agricultural sector for monitoring and detecting diseases on crops. In WVSN, sensor nodes assembled with cameras are used to gather, analyze, and transmit image and video data using a variety of wireless protocols. visual data collection is far larger and more complex than it is for standard wireless sensor networks, necessitating the need of intelligent framework design. In this paper, we review currently available hardware platforms, advances in visual sensor deployment, and coverage in WVSNs. This review also focuses on available wireless communication protocols used for visual monitoring and disease detection in agriculture. We conclude that WVSN is an open research area that needs to be focused on agricultural applications with real-time implementation. © 2023 IEEE.

Prioritization Scheme of wireless visual sensor network for Sewage Treatment Surveillance

Accuracy and survivability are the two primary problems in wireless visual sensor networks (WVSNs) for surveillance application subject to very limited resources. To overcome the frangibility, in this paper, we present a low-cost joint prioritization framework for processing and transmitting microscopic image data in WVSNs of sewage treatment system. Firstly, an improved fast visual background extraction (Vibe) algorithm is put forward to rapidly detect moving microorganisms in wastewater, which play an important role in judging the quality of wastewater treatment. Then, each image macro block is classified into different priority levels according to the object detection results and our designed central weighted criteria based on Gaussian function and user empirical value. Finally, a cognitive routing protocol depending on data priority levels is proposed to keep good balance between energy consumption and transmission delay. Experiment results show the efficiency and effectiveness in terms of salient object detection and resource utilization of our scheme. Compared with other state-of-the-art approaches, the proposed method significantly extends the entire network lifespan with less transmission delay.

Using a wireless visual sensor network to harmonically navigate multiple low-cost wheelchairs in an indoor environment

Harmonic navigation of multiple low-cost robotic wheelchairs in a topology of wireless sensor nodes that are deployed in a dynamic and crowded indoor environment is a Non-deterministic Polynomial-time hard (NP-hard) problem. To address this problem, we propose a distributed multi-wheelchair global harmonic navigation algorithm. The distinguishing features of the proposed navigation algorithm are global search and local conflict resolution abilities. In the proposed algorithm, a travel time prediction method adopts a penalty for potential conflicts based on wheelchairs' priority, velocity and distance between the nodes. Moreover, three harmonic rules are proposed for: (1) giving the highest priority to humans, (2) giving the highest priority to wheelchairs, (3) giving flexible priority to wheelchairs. Through extensive quantitative simulations, we explore the performance of wheelchairs in various floor plan topologies and different values for the system parameters, and demonstrate that the properties of crowded indoor environments have important influence on the performance of global navigation, such as service time. The third harmonic rule establishes the trade-off between the performance of humans and robotic wheelchairs. At the same time, physical prototype wheelchairs are implemented and they verify the proposed global harmonic navigation algorithm. Some suggestions for robotic wheelchair designers, building architects and building owners are provided based on the conclusion of the experimental results. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. wireless visual sensor networks (WVSN) have recently seen dramatic growth with technology development. These networks consist of a number of smart visual sensors (VSes) that can collect visual information, i.e., images and video captured in a network area. Optimizing the energy consumption and coverage are important contradictory challenges in WVSNs since increase in coverage leads to increase in energy consumption. Therefore, optimization of energy consumption by maintaining image quality defined by user or operator located in sink [quality of experience (QoE)] to be used in target tracking applications is addressed in this paper. The target coverage as well as the quality of the received image of the target are considered as the desired QoE. The novel two-dimensional target coverage model is also presented mathematically. This model is described as a function of the VS inherent parameters, the target position and the visual sensor position. Based on a convex optimization framework, a heuristic approach for the VS selection and the focal length adjustment is suggested to solve the optimization problem while maintaining high image quality. Simulation results are presented to verify the capability and efficiency of the proposed method in comparison with the optimal method (Exhaustive search method).

Nowadays, by emerging new technologies, demand for a wireless visual sensor networks (WVSN) has been significantly increased. By providing the vital visual data from such networks, they play a substantial role in the surveillance applications. The wireless visual sensors (VSes) are the main component of these networks, which are equipped with camera and transceiver module. Energy optimization and satisfying the quality of the captured visual data, are two main contradictable issues in this area of research, especially in the target tracking applications. Therefore, these two issues have been simultaneously investigated in this paper. The coverage of the tracked targets and the quality of the captured visual data are considered as the quality of experienced (QoE). The desired threshold of QoE is defined by user. To optimize energy consumption with regard to QoE constraints in a multi target tracking scenario, an effective VSes selection is proposed. This method has been developed based on the convex optimization framework. Besides, the focal length of the VSes is set optimally by executing the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show efficiency of the proposed method compared with the optimal method (exhaustive search).

Efficient Data Reduction Techniques for Remote Applications of a wireless visual sensor network

A wireless visual sensor network (WVSN) is formed by deploying many visual sensor Nodes (VSNs) in the field. After acquiring an image of the area of interest, the VSN performs local processing on it and transmits the result using an embedded wireless transceiver. wireless data transmission consumes a great deal of energy, where energy consumption is mainly dependent on the amount of information being transmitted. The image captured by the VSN contains a huge amount of data. For certain applications, segmentation can be performed on the captured images. The amount of information in the segmented images can be reduced by applying efficient bi-level image compression methods. In this way, the communication energy consumption of each of the VSNs can be reduced. However, the data reduction capability of bi-level image compression standards is fixed and is limited by the used compression algorithm. For applications attributing few changes in adjacent frames, change coding can be applied for further data reduction. Detecting and compressing only the Regions of Interest (ROIs) in the change frame is another possibility for further data reduction. In a communication system, where both the sender and the receiver know the employed compression standard, there is a possibility for further data reduction by not including the header information in the compressed bit stream of the sender. This paper summarizes different information reduction techniques such as image coding, change coding and ROI coding. The main contribution is the investigation of the combined effect of all these coding methods and their application to a few representative real life applications. This paper is intended to be a resource for researchers interested in techniques for information reduction in energy constrained embedded applications.

The coverage optimization of wireless visual sensor networks (WVSNs) with changeable field of views (FOVs) brings more challenges on the decision making of modern cyber-physical systems as it is a multi-objective decision problem where some contradictory indices, e.g. the sensor coverage and the redundancy, should be taken into consideration concurrently. In this paper, a novel multi-species evolutionary algorithm (MSEA) is proposed to address this issue by introducing a multi-species evolution scheme to enhance the search ability. A competition mechanism based on the deductive sort and the crowding distances is developed to facilitate the generation of Pareto front and the elitist individuals are evolved from a multi-species hybrid population. Comparative results show a better balancing performance between the exploration and the exploitation of the proposed algorithm which induces a strong approximation to the feasible WVSN managements. Currently, combining the technology of robot control with wireless sensor network to serve for human being is a hot topic. Coordinating the navigation of multi-robots or multi-wheelchairs under the indoor environments is a challenging task, not only because of the environment limitations, but also because of many dynamic objects. In this paper, firstly, a kind of wireless visual sensor network (WVSN) embedded in the indoor environments is built to coordinate the navigation of multiple wheelchairs. Next, a four-phase navigation routing algorithm is presented. Combinations of multiple protocols in different phases is tested and discussed under a simulation environment. Finally, a prototype is implemented to verify the effectiveness of a selected routing algorithm in a real world scenario.

Greenhouses are proliferating across Canada. Greenhouse crop production requires considerable attention. The only way to maintain the production growth is by controlling the greenhouse atmosphere and monitoring the plants so that they remain healthy in the greenhouse. In this paper, we utilize a wireless visual sensor network (WVSN) with machine learning and image processing to observe any deficiency, pest, or disease presenting on the leaves of the plants. We distribute camera sensors throughout the greenhouse. Each camera sensor node captures an image from inside the greenhouse and use machine learning and image processing techniques to detect the presence of fungus. When a fungus is detected, the camera sensor node sends a message to the sensor node via the wireless sensor network to measure the humidity and then send a message to the actuator to re-set accordingly. This paper demonstrates how Hough forest machine learning and image processing can he successful in detecting fungus present on crop plant leaves from the images taken from camera sensors in the greenhouse. Cross-validation was applied to measure the performance of the system. The results are highly promising. There was a 94% success rate in detecting the fungus.

Data Reduction Using Change Coding for Remote Applications of wireless visual sensor networks

The data reduction capability of image compression schemes is limited by the underlying compression technique. For applications with minor changes between consecutive frames, change coding can be used to further reduce the data. We explored the efficiency of change coding for data reduction in a wireless visual sensor network (WVSN). This paper presents an analysis of the compression efficiency of change coding for a variety of changes, such as different shapes, sizes, and locations of white objects in adjacent sets of frames. Compressing change frame provides a better performance compared with compressing the original frames for up to 95% changes in the number of objects in adjacent frames. Due to illumination noise, the size of the objects increases at its boundaries, which negatively affects the performance of change coding. We experimentally proved that the negative impact of illumination noise could be reduced by applying morphology on the change frame. Communication energy consumption of the VSN is dependent on the data that are transmitted to the server. Our results show that the communication energy consumption of the VSN can be reduced by 27%, 29%, and 46% by applying change coding in combination with JBIG2, Group4, and Gzip_pack, respectively. The findings presented in this paper will aid researchers in enhancing the compression potential of image coding schemes in the energy-constrained applications of WVSNs.
