Low complexity DCT for image compression in wireless visual sensor networks

An energy-efficient discrete cosine transform (DCT) is proposed. It can be used in image compression in wireless visual sensor networks. It is a combination of the recently proposed block discrete cosine transform and a pruned approach. Thus, the computational complexity is reduced significantly. The experimental results show that the proposed transform leads to a significant reduction in computation time at the target sensor node. This will consequently result in a saving in energy consumption. The proposed DCT is very suitable for implementation in wireless sensor networks powered by batteries.

An Energy-Delay Trade-Off in wireless visual sensor networks Based on Two-Sided Matching

wireless visual sensor networks (WVSNs) comprise a large number of battery-powered visual sensors with limited processing and transmission capacity in the field of interest. Hence, energy conservation is an important issue in resource-constrained WVSNs. In-network data fusion, clustering networks has been proved to be an effective scheme in reducing energy consumption. However, in most clustering algorithms, clustering may introduce bottlenecks to WVSNs which bring extra delay in the processes of data collection and forwarding. Such delay can be reduced by the design of routing schemes. In this paper, we propose an approach of energy-delay trade-off (EDT) based on two-sided matching theory. First, we determine a balance clustering structure which can balance energy consumption and delay in random-densely-deployed WVSNs. Then, the problem formulation of EDT problem in the balance clustering structure is provided. Moreover, the transformation strategy based on two-sided matching (TS-TSM) is proposed. After the TS-TSM, the EDT problem is transformed into a stable two-sided matching (STSM) problem with single objective function and the computational complexity is reduced. Furthermore, most of floating-point operations in original EDT problem are converted into integer operations which are easy to parallel compute. Finally, an improved deferred-acceptance algorithm (IDAA) is provided to generate a stable matching solution as the EDT scheme. Evaluation results demonstrate that the EDT approach can reduce delay in data aggregation processes and keep the total energy consumption at low levels. Further simulations show that the EDT approach is a fast approach, and it is not inferior to the existing algorithms.

Joint Quality Enhancement and Power Control for wireless visual sensor networks based on the Nash Bargaining Solution

We propose a cooperative method for resource allocation with power control in a multihop Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access wireless visual sensor Network (WVSN). Typical multihop WVSNs consist of visual sensors that record different scenes and relay nodes that retransmit video data until the base station is reached. The error prone wireless environment contributes to the end-to-end video quality degradation. Moreover, the limited battery life span of the network nodes poses challenges on the management of power consumption. The different resource requirements of the WVSN nodes necessitate a quality-driven and power-aware resource allocation mechanism. We formulate the joint Quality Enhancement and Power Control problem based on a utility function that reflects both the benefit in terms of video quality and the cost in terms of transmission power. This function is employed by the Nash Bargaining Solution, which achieves higher fairness in terms of end-to-end video quality among all nodes. For the fairness assessment, a new metric is introduced. The experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and explain the video quality-power consumption tradeoff as well as the resulting fairness-power consumption tradeoff. In wireless visual sensor networks, the generation and transmission of huge amounts of image data consume much energy of sensor nodes (SNs), and their routing and processing take quite a long time. It is of great importance to shorten event reporting delay (ERD) and prolong network lifetime, which can be achieved by the appropriate deployment of edge nodes (ENs) that can not only collect but also process data. This work investigates how to jointly optimize SN deployment, EN deployment, data routing, and data offloading to minimize the number of deployed SNs, the number of deployed ENs, and ERD and maximize network lifetime. We formulate this problem as a mixed-integer nonlinear program and propose a multiobjective differential evolution algorithm to solve it. A large number of simulation results demonstrate that it can deliver a more accurate Pareto set than the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm III.

sensor selection for improving accuracy of target localisation in wireless visual sensor networks

Considering target localisation without prior knowledge of the target is one of the critical areas of development, in this study, the authors propose a new sensor selection solution that improves the accuracy of target localisation without prior knowledge of the target in wireless visual sensor networks. The proposed solution exploits the properties of the overlap region of the target in images: (i) the more overlap grade, the more cameras project images of the target in the same direction;(ii) the greater overlap area, the higher possibility that the target is located in the region. The authors formulate the sensor selection problem as one of maximising the utility of multiplying the overlap grade by the overlap area gained from a set of sensors. Simulation results show the effectiveness of this approach of sensor selection in terms of improving the accuracy of target localisation.

This letter introduces our initial results of target coverage model in wireless visual sensor networks (WVSNs). In this letter, we develop the Q-coverage model for target detection which is a basis application in WVSNs, and propose a novel coverage degree (CD)-coverage model. First, we present a new concept of CD-coverage and formulate the CD-coverage problem. Further, we propose a harmony search-based coverage-enhancing (HS-CE) approach to obtain an approximate optimal solution for the CD-coverage problem. The extensive simulations show the validity of CD-coverage model and HS-CE approach.

In order to solve the problems of limited energy and noisy channel in wireless visual sensor networks, a image coding algorithm of separated sub-tree based on no list set partitioning in hierarchical trees and a segment transmission scheme are proposed in this paper. Each sub-tree is coded independently to control error propagation, and compressed bit streams are transmitted segmently. Thus anti-noise and energy-efficient performance are greatly improved. The simulation results show the effectiveness of proposed image coding strategy. It can be applied to some specific environment used wireless visual sensor networks.

The maturation of wireless visual sensor networks (WVSN) in the last years, with new communication technologies and continuous releasing of embedded hardware development platforms, has significantly enlarged the number and relevance of visual monitoring applications, better supporting smart city and Internet of Things initiatives. However, there are still several challenges to be addressed, especially when visual sensors are used for critical monitoring. When availability issues are addressed in WVSN, different metrics and algorithms can be employed, but such approaches are usually focused on a single coverage goal. Actually, some monitoring applications may want to simultaneously optimize coverage over targets and areas alike, which requires an appropriate perception of the level of availability of the application at any given time. In this context, this article proposes a new availability metric for WVSN, considering that all targets and areas should be optimally and simultaneously covered by the cameras. In addition, optimization algorithms are proposed and compared, aiming at improving the availability of applications when rotatable visual sensors are employed.

wireless visual sensor networks comprise a large number of camera-equipped sensor devices and obtain visual information from field of interest. In a wireless visual sensor network, there exist visual correlation characteristics among images observed by cameras with overlapped field of views. To describe those characteristics, the conventional method is based on image processing. However, it is too complex to be applied to cameras in resource-constrained wireless visual sensor networks. In this paper, based on 3D sensing model and coordinate transformation theory, a novel 3D visual correlation model is designed to exploit the correlation characteristics among cameras for spatial wireless visual sensor networks. The designed model, of which a visual correlation function was proposed, and then a 3D visual correlation coefficient algorithm is derived. Experimental results demonstrated that the designed model can accurately model the visual correlation characteristics and the proposed 3D visual correlation coefficient algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms.

Survivability is crucial in wireless visual sensor networks (WVSNs) especially when they are used for monitoring and tracking applications with limited available resources. In this paper we are proposing the use of a data relevance dynamic routing protocol that tries to keep a balance between the energy consumption and the packet delay in a WVSN. The proposed dynamic routing protocol follows opportunistic routing approaches. The next node selection criterion can change the routing path dynamically following the network conditions and the channel availability while the energy consumption per node is also considered. Simulation results are presented that show an increase in network lifetime of up to 30% compared with traditional routing while the overall packet delay remains similar.
