VSN is different from traditional WSN that collect and transmit images/video instead of scalar data to the sink. Images provide richer information than scalar data that enable VSN to be a promising technology on security monitoring and surveillance. Image transmission in VSN is expansive due to its large image size and significant energy consumption. One possible way to reduce the image size is to aggregate the received images on the sensor nodes before transmission. By eliminating the redundant image, image aggregation in VSN could transmit the overlapped region of the images only once to reduce the total energy consumption. However, image aggregation requires image processing at the aggregator node that incurs additional node processing energy. In this paper, we study the energy consumption tradeoff between node image processing and image aggregation. We derive the image aggregation energy consumption model that considers the image processing and image transmission. From the simulation results, image aggregation scheme does help lowering the energy consumption. As compared to the non-aggregation scheme, image aggregation scheme consumes only 46% of the energy consumption. In addition, we also find that the threshold for the number of aggregated nodes. Above this threshold, increasing the number aggregated nodes does not help on reducing the energy consumption. This could help determining the number of aggregated nodes under different degree of aggregation to achieve minimum energy consumption.

wireless sensor networks can provide visual information from the monitored field when sensor nodes are equipped with low-power cameras. In general, visual monitoring applications supported by sensing technology will have to address many challenging issues when visual information has to be transmitted over resource-constrained sensors. When addressing energy efficiency, sensing redundancy can be exploited to enlarge the network lifetime, whenever inactive sensors are used to replace faulty nodes. The monitoring of multiple targets may be optimized reducing the number of active visual sensors, but the required perspectives of the targets must be considered. In this paper we propose an algorithm to compute the minimum number of visual sensors that should be activated to cover all desired targets, especially addressing the particular problem when single nodes can view multiple targets at the same time. As different concurrent perspectives of the targets may be required, the proposed algorithm can bring significant results to wireless visual sensor network applications.

visual monitoring in wireless sensor networks can provide valuable information of the monitored field, enriching surveillance and control applications. For those networks, however, some active visual sources may fail or run out of energy, potentially degrading the application monitoring quality. visual sensors may be deployed to monitor a set of targets that are critical for the monitoring tasks of the application, demanding some level of redundancy to compensate sensor failures. In this context, it may be desired to know the probability of a specific target to be covered by at least one visual sensor along the network operation. We propose an approach for the availability assessment in wireless visual sensor networks for the specific case of target coverage, relating sensing redundancy to energy discharging and sensors disconnection. The proposed approach can then be used to predict coverage holes, directly benefiting critical monitoring applications.

In event-driven wireless visual sensor networks (wVSNs), video nodes have access to additional data from scalar-sensors such as temperature or motion. The scalar-data may be used locally by the nodes instead of (or in conjunction with) vision technologies to control the potentially energy-costly transmission and storage of video frames and must thus be reliable. In this work we focus oil the detection of occasional errors in such scalar-data sensors tinder both the scenario of harsh environmental conditions, and the scenario of hostile conditions involving an attacker. In the hostile case, the attack statistics may not be known to the cluster-head performing the error detection. We hence propose the use of a. count detector in conjunction with Nash equilibrium analysis for the hostile case. We compare the detection performance of the count detector in hostile conditions to the performance of the optimal Neyman-Pearson (NP) detector which may be used under harsh conditions (scenario where the error statistics may be estimated). Through analysis and simulations we conclude that in this severe regime of attack with missing statistics, the count detector performs reasonably well compared with the optimal NP detector with significance for reliable event-driven wVSN.

In this paper we present Sim-LIT, a framework for the simulation of packet loss effects on the quality of non-coded or coded still images transported over wireless sensor networks. The tool is focused on image quality assessment and it can be used to evaluate error resilience during image communications. In this first version the evaluation of block interleaving methods is provided. Sim-LIT is highly configurable, providing several options and additional tools. It may be useful to rapidly evaluate interleaving algorithms, or other techniques, or to perform extensive tests considering various image files and loss patterns. Through different simulations we demonstrate the potential of Sim-LIT as a tool for supporting research activities on the image processing and wireless sensor networks domains.

The growing trend towards multimedia communications over wireless sensor networks has led to the emergence of wireless visual sensor networks (WVSNs). Specially, video surveillance and security applications have received substantial attention due to terrorist and security threats of the last years. One of the biggest challenges in WVSNs is guaranteeing delay bound delivery of data to the destination. The energy and bandwidth constraints of sensor nodes, make this task even more daunting. This paper proposes a dynamic MAC protocol, that employs a duty cycle scheme, to achieve end-to-end delay guarantees (among heavy traffic load) along with energy conservation.

In this paper, we consider the visual sensor deployment algorithm in Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) wireless visual sensor networks (WVSN). With the capability of panning, tilting and zooming, the sensor visual coverage can be enlarged and fewer visual sensors are needed as compared to the traditional WVSN. We divide the Field of View (FoV) of the PTZ sensor into two regions, Direct Coverage Region (DCR) and PTZ Coverage Region (PTZCR). In the PTZCR, the visual sensor need to pan-tilt-zoom the camera angle to cover the object. Because pan-tilt-zoom is a slow mechanic operation, visual sensor might not be able to adjust the angle in time to capture the visual data. One possible way to alleviate this problem is to make sure the PTZCR are covered by M sensors. With large M, there is a high probability of adjusting the camera in time to capture the visual data at the PTZCR by at least one camera. We tackle this visual sensor deployment problem in PTZ WVSN to make sure that each area is either covered in the DCR of a single visual sensor or in the PTZCR of M sensors. Then novel heuristic, PTZA algorithm, is proposed to solve the problem. In the computational experiments, we find out that PTZ capable camera sensor could significantly reduce the number of deployed sensors especially in smaller sensing range and smaller camera span angle.

In wireless visual sensor networks comprised of multiple camera-enabled sensors, source prioritization can be exploited to soften the impact of congestion, packet loss and energy depletion when higher relevant packets are processed. However, for such optimizations, source nodes have to be properly prioritized according to some effective metric. When performing visual sensing over moving targets, sensors may view different parts of the targets, which may have particular relevance for monitoring applications. In this context, this paper proposes a low-cost mathematical approach that associates a priority level to each visual source node according to the viewed segments of the targets' perimeter, and such priority may then be exploited for a large set of optimizations. A complete mathematical formulation and numerical results are presented to base the proposed approach.

wireless visual sensor Network is a collective network of nodes capable of collecting, processing, and transmitting a huge amount of image/video data from a region of interest to the base station. These nodes are equipped by cameras and are characterized by their limited resources in terms of computational capability, bandwidth and battery power. This type of networks are more complicated and challenging compared to traditional wireless sensor networks. Therefore, a number of solutions have been recently proposed such as the cross-layer designs, which is an interesting research topic. It allows sharing information across all network layers even the nonadjacent ones, in order to improve the wireless network functionality and to obtain performance gains. In this article, we will present a survey of cross-layer design in wireless visual sensor networks where we will classify the recent proposals in this area in term of their architecture, interaction categories and theirs outcomes.

Survivability is crucial in wireless visual sensor networks (WVSNs) especially when they are used for monitoring and tracking applications with limited available resources. In this paper we are proposing the use of a data relevance dynamic routing protocol that tries to keep a balance between the energy consumption and the packet delay in a WVSN. The proposed dynamic routing protocol follows opportunistic routing approaches. The next node selection criterion can change the routing path dynamically following the network conditions and the channel availability while the energy consumption per node is also considered. Simulation results are presented that show an increase in network lifetime of up to 30% compared with traditional routing while the overall packet delay remains similar.
