Distributed source coding addresses the compression of correlated sources without communication links among them. This paper is concerned with the wyner-ziv problem: coding of an information source with side information available only at the decoder in the form of a noisy version of the source. Both the problems of theoretical analysis and code design are addressed in the framework of multi-dimensional nested lattice coding. For theoretical analysis, accurate computation of the rate-distortion function is given under the high-resolution assumption, and a new upper bound using the derivative of the theta series is derived. For practical code design, several low-complexity techniques are proposed. Compared to the existing Slepian-Wolf coded nested quantization for wyner-ziv coding based on one or two-dimensional lattices, our proposed multi-dimensional lattice coding can offer better performance at arguably lower complexity, since it does not require the second stage of Slepian-Wolf coding.

This paper addresses lossy transmission of a common source over a broadcast channel when there is correlated side information at the receivers, with emphasis on the quadratic Gaussian and binary Hamming cases. A digital scheme that combines ideas from the lossless version of the problem, i.e., Slepian-Wolf coding over broadcast channels, and dirty paper coding, is presented and analyzed. This scheme uses layered coding where the common layer information is intended for both receivers and the refinement information is destined only for one receiver. For the quadratic Gaussian case, a quantity characterizing the combined quality of each receiver is identified in terms of channel and side information parameters. It is shown that it is more advantageous to send the refinement information to the receiver with "better" combined quality. In the case where all receivers have the same overall quality, the presented scheme becomes optimal. Unlike its lossless counterpart, however, the problem eludes a complete characterization.

A new hybrid digital/analog scheme is proposed for lossy transmission of a Gaussian source over a bandwidth-matched Gaussian broadcast channel with source side information available at each receiver. The proposed scheme combines two schemes that were previously shown to achieve optimal point-to-point distortion/power tradeoff simultaneously at all receivers under two distinct conditions stated in terms of channel and side information quality parameters. For the two-receiver case, the combined scheme is shown to achieve the same kind of optimality for the entire region in the parameter space sandwiched between those two conditions. Crucial to this result is a new degree of freedom discovered in designing point-to-point hybrid digital/analog schemes with side information. When superimposed with analog transmission, the proposed scheme outperforms all previously known schemes even outside the optimality region in the parameter space.

Existing 3-D dynamic mesh compression methods directly explore temporal redundancy by predictive coding and the coded bitstreams are sensitive to transmission errors. In this paper, an efficient and error-resilient compression paradigm based on wyner-ziv coding (WZC) is proposed. We first apply an anisotropic wavelet transform (AWT) on each frame to explore their spatial redundancy. Then the wavelet coefficients of every frame are compressed by a wyner-ziv codec which is composed of a nested scalar quantizer and a turbo codes based Slepian-Wolf codec. Benefiting from the inherent robustness of WZC, the proposed coding scheme can alleviates the problem of error-propagation associated with conventional predictive coding scheme. Furthermore, based on wavelet transform, our method can be extended to support progressive coding which is desirable for the streaming of 3D meshes. Experimental results show that our scheme is competitive with other compression methods in compression performance. Moreover, our method is more robust when transmission error occurs.

We consider the problem of transmitting common message over discrete memoryless broadcast channel (DM-BC) with noncausal discrete memoryless (DM) channel side information (CSI) only known at encoder. Nayak, etc. consider this problem and give a scheme combining wyner-ziv coding and Gelfand-Pinsker coding. The Gelfand-Pinsker's code is optimal for point-to-point communication with the encoder accessed to noncausal CSI. But Nair, etc., show that the straightforward extension of Gelfand-Pinsker's code to DM-BC with DM state is not optimal. In this paper, the inner bound of transmitting common message over DM-BC with noncausal DM-CSI only known at encoder is given. The proof of achievability uses wyner-ziv coding, Gelfand-Pinsker coding, superposition coding, Marton coding and indirect decoding.

Arising needs for extremely simple encoder motivate investigations on distributed video coding (DVC). The wyner-ziv coding, one of the representative DVC schemes, reconstructs video by correcting noise on side information using channel code. Therefore, its coding performance decisively depends on the amount of noise in the side information. However it is hard for a decoder to generate good side information, especially in case that frames are less correlated., Large amount of parity bits certainly helps the decoder to correct noise but it only comes with low compression ratio. In this paper, we propose a method to enhance the quality of the side information, with incrementally transmitted parity bits from encoder. Results of our experiments have verified average PSNR gain up to 0.8dB.

Slepian-Wolf coded nested lattice quantization for wyner-ziv coding: High-rate performance analysis and code design

Nested lattice quantization provides a practical scheme for wyner-ziv coding. This paper examines the high-rate performance of nested lattice quantizers and gives the theoretical performance for general continuous sources. In the quadratic Gaussian case, as the rate increases, we observe an increasing gap between the performance of finite-dimensional nested lattice quantizers and the wyner-ziv distortion-rate function. We argue that this is because the boundary gain decreases as the rate of the nested lattice quantizers increases. To increase the boundary gain and ultimately boost the overall performance, a new practical wyner-ziv coding scheme called Slepian-Wolf coded nested lattice quantization (SWC-NQ) is proposed, where Slepian-Wolf coding is applied to the quantization indices of the source for the purpose of compression with side information at the decoder. Theoretical analysis shows that for the quadratic Gaussian case and at high rate, SWC-NQ performs the same as conventional entropy-coded lattice quantization with the side information available at both the encoder and the decoder. Furthermore, a nonlinear minimum mean-square error (MSE) estimator is introduced at the decoder, which is theoretically proven to degenerate to the linear minimum MSE estimator at high rate and experimentally shown to outperform the linear estimator at low rate. Practical designs of one- and two-dimensional nested lattice quantizers together with multilevel low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes for Slepian-Wolf coding give performance close to the theoretical limits of SWC-NQ.

Successive wyner-ziv coding scheme and its application to the quadratic Gaussian CEO problem

In this paper, we introduce a distributed source coding scheme called, successive wyner-ziv coding. We show that every point in the rate region of the quadratic Gaussian CEO problem can be achieved via successive wyner-ziv coding. The concept of successive refinement in single source coding is generalized to the distributed source coding scenario, which we refer to as distributed successive refinement. For the quadratic Gaussian CEO problem, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for distributed successive refinement, where the successive wyner-ziv coding scheme plays an important role.

Low-Delay Prediction- and Transform-Based wyner-ziv coding

This paper studies low-delay wyner-ziv coding, i.e., lossy source coding with side information at the decoder, with emphasis on the extreme of zero delay. To achieve zero delay, a scalar quantizer is followed by scalar coding of quantization indices. In the fixed-length coding scenario, under high-resolution assumptions and appropriately defined decodability constraints, the optimal quantization level density is conjectured to be periodic. This conjecture, which is provable when the correlation is high, allows for a precise analysis of the rate-distortion tradeoff. The performance of variable-length coding with periodic quantization is also characterized. The results are then incorporated in predictive wyner-ziv coding for Gaussian sources with memory, and optimal prediction filters are numerically designed so as to strike a balance between maximally exploiting both temporal and spatial correlation and limiting the propagation of distortion due to occasional decoding errors. Finally, the zero-delay schemes are also employed in transform coding with small block lengths, where the Gaussian source and side information are transformed separately with the premise that corresponding transform coefficient pairs exhibit good spatial correlation and minimal temporal correlation. For the specific source-side information pairs studied, it is shown that transform coding, even with a small block-length, outperforms predictive coding. Performances of both predictive and transform coding are also compared with the asymptotic rate-distortion bounds.

A Universal Scheme for wyner-ziv coding of Discrete Sources

We consider the wyner-ziv (WZ) problem of lossy compression where the decompressor observes a noisy version of the source, whose statistics are unknown. A new family of WZ coding algorithms is proposed and their universal optimality is proven. Compression consists of sliding-window processing followed by Lempel-ziv (LZ) compression, while the decompressor is based on a modification of the discrete universal denoiser (DUDE) algorithm to take advantage of side information. The new algorithms not only universally attain the fundamental limits, but also suggest a paradigm for practical WZ coding. The effectiveness of our approach is illustrated with experiments on binary images, and English text using a low complexity algorithm motivated by our class of universally optimal WZ codes.
