Research on Carried-Based PWM with zero-sequence component Injection for Vienna Type Rectifiers

This paper studies the inherent relationship between currents and zero-sequence components. Then a precise algorithm is proposed to calculate the injected zero-sequence component to control the DC-Link neutral-point voltage balance, which can result in a more efficient and flexible neutral point voltage balance with a desirable performance. In addition, it is shown that carried-based PWM with the calculated zero-sequence component scheme can be equivalent to space-vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM). Based on the proposed method, the optimal zero-sequence component of the feasible modulation indices is analyzed. In addition, the unbalanced load limitation of the DC-Link neutral-point voltage balance control is also revealed. Simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the validity and practicality of the proposed algorithm.

A novel on-line rotor position estimation method for an aircraft wound-field synchronous starter/generator in the low-speed region is proposed in this paper. Unlike that of High-frequency signal injection, the new method utilizes zero-sequence component for rotor position estimation, which is inherently produced by the space-vector pulsewidth modulator. In this way, no modification is required in the PWM and there is no additional torque ripple. The new method is based on the multi-stage structure and the mutual inductance between stator and rotor windings of the main machine, so it is independent of magnetic *** rotor position information is extracted from the zero-sequence response current signals in the stator windings of the main exciter. Theoretical expressions of the zero-sequence response current signals containing rotor position information in the rotor windings of the main machine and stator windings of the main exciter are derived. Also, a novel signal processing method is adopted to extract rotor position information. The performance of the proposed method is verified by the simulation results, and accuracy can be guaranteed even if the magnetic saliency of the main machine changes greatly during the start-up process.

Common-Mode Voltage Reduction Modulation Strategy Based on Nearest Four Voltage Vectors Optimization for Vienna Rectifier

In Vienna rectifier, amplitude of the common mode voltage (CMV), fluctuation of the neutral point (NP) voltage, and harmonics of the input current are mutually coupled, making it difficult to balance these performances using the conventional strategy. A novel CMV-reduction modulation strategy based on the nearest four voltage vectors optimization is proposed, which can simultaneously decrease the NP voltage fluctuation and the input current harmonics. First, the issue of large switch-order harmonics in input current using the conventional strategy is analyzed according to the characteristics of the current ripple vector trajectory. The proposed strategy adopts four voltage vectors with low CMV amplitudes, which are nearest to the reference voltage vector. The duty cycles are distributed by the zero-sequence component to ensure that the average NP current is zero, which can reduce the NP voltage fluctuation and CMV simultaneously. Furthermore, to reduce switch-order harmonics and zero-crossing distortion of the input current, the optimal switching sequence is obtained by permutation and combination to minimize the vector synthesis error of the reference voltage. The duty cycles are optimized by limiting the range of zero-sequence component to eliminate the large voltage vector. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified on a Vienna rectifier platform.

This paper addresses the diagnostics of inter-turn short-circuit faults in the stator windings of symmetrical six-phase induction motors supplied by an unbalanced voltage three-phase system, or under the occurrence of a single-phasing condition. A new approach based on the analysis of the zero-sequence component of the apparent power is proposed to diagnose the inter-turn short circuit faults, independently of the presence of unbalanced supply voltages or single-phasing conditions. Additionally, the voltage Park's vector modulus, and the analysis of the rms values of the six-phase motor currents are also considered in the proposed technique, to monitor and detect the existence of unbalanced supply voltage conditions and open-circuit faults, respectively. Experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach in discriminating between all these conditions.

An Optimized Carrier Phase-Shifted Modulation Strategy for Cuk PV Inverter

There exists the problems of output voltage zero-point drift and high even harmonic content of the three-phase Cuk liftable voltage photovoltaic (PV) inverter when it adopts the conventional carrier modulation method. In view of these, a new optimized Phase-Shifted Pulse Width Modulation (PSPWM) strategy is proposed. Firstly, the optimal zero-sequence component is determined based on the inverter topology and control objectives. Next, the zero-sequence component is injected into the sinusoidal signal and used as the new modulating signal so that the carrier pulse width modulation is equivalent to the space vector pulse width modulation. Finally, the carrier and modulating waveforms are blended in a superior manner, and a new logical operation is applied to generate the required switching drive signals for the control of the inverter switching tubes. In order to verify the effectiveness of the strategy, simulation and experimental platforms were constructed, and numerous simulations and experiments were done. The results show that the modulation strategy can solve the output voltage zero drift problem effectively, and suppress the even harmonics effectively, meanwhile, the harmonics are mainly concentrated near the primary frequency, which significantly reduces the total harmonic content and greatly improves the output voltage waveform. In addition, the modulation can be achieved by reducing one carrier signal, thus simplifying the modulation process and the design of the digital signal system.

Direct Power Control of Vienna Rectifier Based on Fractional Order Sliding Mode Control

Taking a Vienna rectifier as the research object, the power mathematical model based on a switching function is established according to its working principle. A sliding mode variable structure control algorithm based on the reaching law is examined in order to address the issues of the slow response speed and inadequate anti-interference of classical PI control in the face of abrupt changes in the DC-side load. In response to the sluggish convergence rate and inadequate chattering suppression of classical integer order sliding mode control, a fractional order exponential reaching law sliding mode, direct power control approach with rapid convergence is developed. The fractional calculus is introduced into the sliding mode control, and the dynamic performance and convergence speed of the control system are improved by increasing the degree of freedom of the fractional calculus operator. The method of including a balance factor in the zero-sequence component is employed to address the issue of the midpoint potential equilibrium in the Vienna rectifier. Ultimately, the suggested control is evaluated against classical PI control through simulation analysis and experimental validation. The findings indicate that the proposed technique exhibits rapid convergence, reduced control duration, and enhanced robustness, hence augmenting its resistance to interference.

Research on the Equivalent Virtual Space Vector Modulation Output of Diode Clamped N-level Converter under Multi-Modulation Carrier Modulation

Diode-clamped multi-level converters have DC-side capacitors in series, which will lead to the unbalance of DC-side capacitor voltage, the distortion of the output waveform, the increase of total harmonic distortion (THD), and even the damage of switching devices, which will make the system inoperable. The proposal of virtual space vector pulse-width modulation (VSVPWM) realizes the balanced control of the capacitor voltage, but when the output level of converter increases, the implementation of VSVPWM becomes very complicated, and the amount of calculation also increases greatly, thus hindering its application in the multi-level circuit. Compared with VSVPWM, the carrier-based pulse-width modulation (CBPWM) is simple to operate and easy to implement. If the equivalent relationship between CBPWM and VSVPWM can be found, the application of VSVPWM can be generalized to any level, and the advantages of VSVPWM can be fully utilized. This paper aims to study the inner relationship of VSVPWM and the multi-modulation carrier CBPWM (MCBPWM). After strict theoretical analysis, the equivalent relationship of VSVPWM and MCBPWM in the three-level and four-level and converter is realized by injecting the zero-sequence component into the modulation waves. Furthermore, the equivalent relationship between VSVPWM and MCBPWM is deduced to the N-level converter. Finally, the correctness of the relevant theoretical analysis is verified by the experiment.

CBPWM and SVPWM equivalent relationship on single-phase NPC N-level inverters with arbitrary sequence

Single-phase multilevel neutral-point-clamped (NPC) voltage source inverter has been widely applied in AC traction drive system, the carrier-based pulse width modulation (CBPWM) method and the space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) method are mainly two modulation methods for single-phase NPC multilevel converters, and there is a certain relationship between these two modulation strategies. In this study, the unified relationship between SVPWM and CBPWM in single-phase three-level and five-level NPC has been analysed. Then by injecting the zero-sequence component into the initial modulation wave, the same switching state and output current as SVPWM can be achieved through modulation waves decomposed under the CBPWM strategy. Finally, the unified theory of SVPWM and CBPWM in an N-level inverter with an arbitrary number of segments sequence was deduced. The simulation and experimental results illustrate that the unified theory between CBPWM and SVPWM is correct. With the zero-sequence injected, CBPWM can realise the same effect as SVPWM, but the former is simpler than the latter, which is easy to promote for higher-level applications.

A Fast Multilevel SVPWM Method Based on the Imaginary Coordinate With Direct Control of Redundant Vectors or zero sequence components

This paper for the first time comprehensively presents a multilevel space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) method based on the imaginary coordinate system. This method is probably one of the most efficient methods in fast multilevel SVPWMs. It avoids trigonometric operation, look-up tables and only requires simple logic judgement and arithmetic calculation. A distinct advantage of this method over other coordinate-transformation-based methods is that it does not need to transform from the imaginary coordinate system back to the a-b-c (or alpha-beta) coordinate in order to select the redundant vectors using look-up tables. The redundant vectors or zero-sequence components are directly worked out in the proposed method, e.g., for balancing dc-link capacitor voltages, which avoids identifying the starting vector, vector rotation direction (clockwise or anti-clockwise), vector sequence, etc. as used in conventional methods. This paper entails each step to implement this SVPWM method, which can be replicated for multilevel converters with any number of voltage levels. The presented method has been used and validated by various converters, including a three-level and a five-level neutral-point-clamped converter. The archive value of this paper is that it demonstrates a milestone of fast multilevel SVPWM based on coordinate transformation.

Effects of imbalance on single-phase to ground fault characteristics in low-resistance grounded systems

Single-phase to ground faults (SPGFs) are common in low-resistance grounded systems (LRGSs), a type of medium-voltage power distribution network (MVDN). Imbalance is one of the main characteristics of MVDNs. However, there has been little research on the effects of imbalance on SPGF characteristics in LRGSs, especially from the perspective of theoretical analysis. Hence, in this study, a controlled source-based simplified linear model suitable for calculating SPGFs in unbalanced LRGSs is proposed. Based on the model, the effects of unbalanced loads and asymmetrical lines on SPGF are discussed. The analysis results show that "zero-sequence (ZS) parameter intrusion" of loads is absent in LRGSs, and asymmetrical line parameters have a substantial effect on the phase angle between the ZS line current and the ZS bus voltage, which is related to the fault resistance, fault phase and line parameters. Finally, two phase-related detection methods are analyzed, and both methods produce erroneous detection results. Therefore, it is recommended that the effects of imbalance be considered when using detection methods based on the relationship between the voltage and current in LRGSs.
