The dispensing mechanism of active code is the key technology in activenetwork. Conventional capsule and programmable switch approaches have their own shortcomings. DCCANmechanism presented in this paper overcomes their shortcomings. In this paper, capsule andprogrammable switch, approaches are introduced and their shortcomings are analyzed. The principle ofDCCAN mechanism is described. The theoretical analyses in transmission bandwidth based on DCCANmechanism and capsule approach are described, and key factors which affect the transmissionbandwidth based on DCCAN mechanism are also discussed. At the same time, the theoretical analyses inlatency based on DCCAN mechanism and capsule approach are described. The using condition of DCCANmechanism is also discussed.

The dispensing mechanism of active code is a key technology in an active network. Conventional capsule and programmable switch approaches have their own shortcomings. The DCCAN(distributed code caching for active network) mechanism presented in this paper overcomes these shortcomings. In this paper, capsule and programmable switch approaches are introduced, and their shortcomings are analyzed. The principle of the DCCAN mechanism is described. The theory analysis in transmit width based on the DCCAN mechanism and capsule approach are described. The theory analysis shows that the DCCAN mechanism has many good characteristics and can improve the efficiency of an active network. Key factors which affect the transmit width based on the DCCAN mechanism are discussed. The using condition of the DCCAN mechanism is also discussed.

The deployment of sophisticated telecommunication services poses demanding design and implementation challenges to the underlying infrastructure. The end-goal of more flexibility, fault tolerance, quality of services, intelligence, component-based service integration, service personalization, programmability, openness and of course security in a heterogeneous infrastructure can be reasonably achieved via active and programmable networks. In this paper, we first investigate an integrated architecture for active and programmable network infrastructures that is based on mobile agent technology. Subsequently we present a security architecture for our node and comment on its functionality and technology choices made. At the end a dynamic VPN deployment with nomadic user support scenario is analyzed in order to argue about the pros and cons offered by this approach. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. active networks (AN) are a rapid evolving area of research and in parallel an area of great industry interest. However, for this technology to make the step out of the labs and penetrate the market, the security problems have to be tackled effectively. This paper demonstrates why and how agent technology research, can and should be applied to active networks, in order to fulfill the new security challenges this infrastructure poses. First, we identify the key elements of AN, analyze the nature of active code, specify the role of agents in active networks and present a multi-execution environment active network architecture. Then, we target the security threats for active code and execution environment, and state the basic as well as the extended security requirements. Subsequently, we try to see how we can apply the security solutions and research done for agents to the context of active networks in order to satisfy their requirements.
