This paper presents the design of a compact uniform circular antenna arraysystem used in conjunction with the RT-1944/U radio and reports the obtained experimental results. The proposed system was primarily designed to increase the communications range between Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) sea frames and Mission Package Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) by developing a modular aerostat communications relay system for the 5.8 GHz WIMAX or WiFi radios that is semi-autonomously deployed and retrieved from the LCS and Unmanned Influence Sweep system USV. Given the sensitive nature of the application for which the system was designed, additional functionalities were added in order to render the system robust. The latter was achieved by enabling the system to operate with a variety of state of the art communication techniques. The proposed system is able to transmit and receive with beamforming capabilities, spatially and spectrally map and resolve emitters (friendly and foe), and operate within a larger spatial range in a line of sight (LOS) environment.

In this paper, we present a performance analysis of a smart antenna system operating in a wide-band CDMA wireless-local-loop channel using a beam-forming module (BFM) that has been implemented on a digital signal processor (TMS320C6701) board. We first show the results of computer simulations obtained from the modeled received (RX) signals through a test-bed system consisting solely of baseband signal processing parts, i.e., modeled RX data-generating PC, BFM for computing the optimal weight vector and interfacing module. A test-bed system of the entire base station is then implemented to evaluate the adaptive beam-forming function with the actual wireless signals. This test-bed system includes several subscribers, as well as the array antenna, RF modules, and other receiving parts required at the cell site.

An alternative way of adaptive beamforming is presented in this paper. The main contribution of the new technique is in its simplicity with a minimal loss of accuracy. Total computational load for computing a suboptimal weight vector from each new signal vector is about O(2N(2) + 5N), It can further be reduced down to O(3N) by approximating the autocorrelation matrix with the instantaneous signal vector at each snapshot, The required condition on the adaptive gain for the proposed algorithm to converge Is derived analytically. The proposed beamforming algorithm is applied to the base station of a code-division-multiple access (CDMA) mobile communication system, The performance of the proposed method is shown in multipath fading communication channels in terms of the signal-to-interference + noise ratio (SINR), the bit error rate (BER), and the achievable capacity of a given CDMA cell/sector.
