Demand response (DR) continues to deepen the practice, the future needs to rely on highly reliable information interaction to support fine DR control. Aiming at the communication optimization problem of DR wireless communication, this paper designs a double-layer adaptive coding strategy based on real-time monitoring of signal-to-noise ratio and real-time acquisition of broadcast messages from DR master station on the premise of analyzing the quality of service requirements of all kinds of DR services. The proposed strategy uses adaptive precoding technology to optimize DR wireless communication, classifies the communication quality of service according to the specific period of time during the implementation of DR, and considers the computational cost introduced by the algorithm. The simulation results show that the strategy has a good optimization effect in the system bit error rate and processing delay control.

An adaptive joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme is presented for transmitting correlated sources over discrete-memoryless two-way channels subject to distortion constraints. The proposed JSCC scheme makes use of the previously transmitted and received channel signals as well as the sources' correlation to facilitate coordination between terminals. It is shown that the adaptive scheme strictly subsumes prior lossy coding methods for two-way simultaneous transmission and yields a new adaptive separate source-channel coding result. Two examples are given to show the scheme's advantages.

The European Space Agency in cooperation with Inmarsat launched the Alphasat communication satellite in 2013, which hosts four technology demonstration payloads. One of them is the Aldo Paraboni payload composed of the Q/V band communication and Ka/Q band propagation experiments. The payload and the communication experiment are funded by the Italian Space Agency. Budapest University of Technology, Hungary in cooperation with Joanneum Research, Austria built a receiver station to conduct site diversity and adaptive coding and modulation experiments over the Q/V band satellite channel. The transmitter/receiver station in Austria and the receiver station in Hungary form a long-distance diversity system that is used to investigate the capabilities of the adaptive technique under various propagation conditions controlled by the local signal quality at the receiver site in Budapest. This paper provides a detailed overview of the diversity station in Budapest. The operation of the adaptive coding and modulation experiment is illustrated with measurements performed in 2017.

The recently developed technique of arithmetic coding, in conjunction with a Markov model of the source, is a powerful method of data compression in situations where a linear treatment is inappropriate. adaptive coding allows the model to be constructed dynamically by both encoder and decoder during the course of the transmission, and has been shown to incur a smaller coding overhead than explicit transmission of the model's statistics. But there is a basic conflict between the desire to use high-order Markov models and the need to have them formed quickly as the initial part of the message is sent. This paper describes how the conflict can be resolved with partial string matching, and reports experimental results which show that mixed-case English text can be coded in as little as 2.2 bits/ character with no prior knowledge of the source.

Multiresolution (MR) representations have been very successful in image encoding, due to both their algorithmic performance and coding efficiency. However these transforms are fixed, suggesting that coding efficiency could be further improved if a multiresolution code could be adapted to a specific signal class. Among adaptive coding methods, independent component analysis (ICA) provides the best linear code by finding a linear transform with maximally independent coefficients, given a specific signal distribution. This technique, however, scales poorly with the dimensionality of the data, and has been ill-suited for large-scale image coding. We propose a hybrid method (multi-resolution ICA) which derives an ICA basis for each subband space produced by a given MR transform over the image class. We find that this method produces a significantly more efficient code compared to the MR transform alone. We provide both quantitative and qualitative assessments of coding performance, and illustrate improvement over standard (i.e., non-adaptive) wavelet-based representations such as that used in JPEG2000.

This paper presents an adaptive coding scheme for digital communication over time-varying channels. The scheme is based on a finite-state Markov channel model. Emphasis is on the adaptation of the error protection to the actual channel state. The throughput gains that are achieved by the adaptive scheme relative to the conventional nonadaptive coding methods are demonstrated by several examples. Of special interest is the use of punctured convolutional codes with maximum-likelihood Viterbi algorithm to enable adaptive encoding and decoding without modifying the basic structure of the encoder and the decoder.

Efficient shape modeling:: ε-entropy, adaptive coding, and boundary curves -vs- blum's medial axis

We propose efficiency of representation as a criterion for evaluating shape models, then apply this criterion to compare the boundary curve representation with the medial axis. We estimate the epsilon-entropy of two compact classes of curves. We then construct two adaptive encodings for non-compact classes of shapes, one using the boundary curve and the other using the medial axis, and determine precise conditions for when the medial axis is more efficient. Finally, we apply our results to databases of naturally occurring shapes, determining whether the boundary or medial axis is more efficient. Along the way we construct explicit near-optimal boundary-based approximations for compact classes of shapes, construct an explicit compression scheme for non-compact classes of shapes based on the medial axis, and derive some new results about the medial axis.

adaptive coding of information is a fundamental principle of brain functioning. It allows for efficient representation over a large range of inputs and thereby alleviates the limited coding range of neurons. In the present study, we investigated for the first time potential alterations in context-dependent reward adaptation and its association with symptom dimensions in the schizophrenia spectrum. We studied 27 patients with first-episode psychosis, 26 individuals with schizotypal personality traits and 25 healthy controls. We used functional MRI in combination with a variant of the monetary incentive delay task and assessed adaptive reward coding in two reward conditions with different reward ranges. Compared to healthy controls, patients with first-episode psychosis and healthy individuals with schizotypal personality traits showed a deficit in increasing the blood oxygen level-dependent response slope in the right caudate for the low reward range compared to the high reward range. In other words, the two groups showed inefficient neural adaptation to the current reward context. In addition, we found impaired adaptive coding of reward in the caudate nucleus and putamen to be associated with total symptom severity across the schizophrenia spectrum. Symptom severity was more strongly associated with neural deficits in adaptive coding than with the neural coding of absolute reward outcomes. Deficits in adaptive coding were prominent across the schizophrenia spectrum and even detectable in unmedicated (healthy) individuals with schizotypal personality traits. Furthermore, the association between total symptom severity and impaired adaptive coding in the right caudate and putamen suggests a dimensional mechanism underlying imprecise neural adaptation. Our findings support the idea that impaired adaptive coding may be a general information-processing deficit explaining disturbances within the schizophrenia spectrum over and above a simple model of blunted absolute rewar

Deficits in neural processing of reward have been described in both bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SZ), but it remains unclear to what extent these deficits are caused by similar mechanisms. Efficient reward processing relies on adaptive coding which allows representing large input spans by limited neuronal encoding ranges. Deficits in adaptive coding of reward have previously been observed across the SZ spectrum and correlated with total symptom severity. In the present work, we sought to establish whether adaptive coding is similarly affected in patients with BD. Twenty-five patients with BD, 27 patients with SZ and 25 healthy controls performed a variant of the Monetary Incentive Delay task during functional magnetic resonance imaging in two reward range conditions. adaptive coding was impaired in the posterior part of the right caudate in BD and SZ (trend level). In contrast, BD did not show impaired adaptive coding in the anterior caudate and right precentral gyrus/insula, where SZ showed deficits compared to healthy controls. BD patients show adaptive coding deficits that are similar to those observed in SZ in the right posterior caudate. adaptive coding in BD appeared more preserved as compared to SZ participants especially in the more anterior part of the right caudate and to a lesser extent also in the right precentral gyrus. Thus, dysfunctional adaptive coding could constitute a fundamental deficit in severe mental illnesses that extends beyond the SZ spectrum.
