The paper addresses several issues involved in interleaving compressed output from multiple non-prefix codes or from a combination of prefix and non-prefix codes. The technique used throughout is decoder-synchronized encoding, in which the encoder manipulates the data stream to allow just-in-time decoding. We provide three extensions to block Melcode (a coder based on interleaved run-length codes) that allow its use with multisymbol alphabets, allow its use with an extended class of prefix codes, and reduce its worst-case inefficiency by almost two thirds. We also show that it is possible to interleave output from an arithmetic coder with output from a prefix coder, such as a Huffman coder; we present an encoder back-end that handles all the details transparently, requiring only minor changes to the encoders and no changes to the decoders.

A 32 nm 32 Gb MLC flash memory, with MSB even page re-program, dramatically improves floating-gate (FG) coupling-induced V th -widening while FG coupling cancellation program verify read minimizes performance loss due to additional program operation allowing throughput of 13.0 MB/S. More than 30% improvement in retention-V th -shift and additional 50 mV reduction of cell Vth distribution is achieved by moving-read and adaptive code selection. Die size of the device is 146 mm 2 in 3M 32 nm CMOS.

The authors introduce a one-pass adaptive universal quantization technique for real, bounded alphabet, stationary sources. The algorithm is set on line without any prior knowledge of the statistics of the sources which it might encounter and asymptotically achieves ideal performance on all sources that it sees. The system consists of an encoder and a decoder. At increasing intervals, the encoder refines its codebook using knowledge about incoming data symbols. This codebook is then described to the decoder in the form of updates on the previous codebook. The accuracy to which the codebook is described increases as the number of symbols seen, and thus the accuracy to which the codebook is known, grows.< >

Summary form only given. We adapted well-known algorithms of adaptive Huffman coding and LZW to use syllables and words instead of characters for text compression. We tested the algorithms on collections of small or middle-sized files. Using syllable-based compression algorithms on English documents gives expected results: they outperform character-based and are outperformed by word-based versions of the same algorithm. According our tests both syllable- and word-based compression methods are sensitive to initial setting of their dictionaries. The decomposition of words into syllables is not trivial and is language dependent. An open issue is the applicability of syllable-based compression for different languages (like German, Rusian, or Hungarian) and its use in conjunction with other algorithms like block-sorting lossless compression

The technique proposed is based on a feedback adaptation of the LPC and LTP (long-term prediction) coefficients on a block basis, and on an adaptive linear code-book vector quantizer. The authors designed a 12 kb/s coding scheme with high quality, low delay, and low complexity. A 4 kb/s block protection can then be applied to ensure a robust operation at 16 kb/s. The authors give a detailed description of the backward block adapted ACELP for an operation at 12 kbps. They report quality tests including comparisons with the 32 kb/s G.721 and the 13 kb/s GSM. Finally they show that the implementation requires only 11 MIPS on a fixed point 16 bit DSP.< >

Over the past several decades, the compiler research community has developed a number of sophisticated and powerful algorithms for a variety of code improvements. While there are still promising directions for particular optimizations, research on new or improved optimizations is reaching the point of diminishing returns and new approaches are needed to achieve significant performance improvements beyond traditional optimizations. In this paper, we describe a new strategy based on a continuous compilation system that constantly improves application code by applying aggressive and adaptive code optimizations at all times, from static optimization to online dynamic optimization. In this paper, we describe our general approach and process for continuous compilation of application code. We also present initial results from our research with continuous compilation. These initial results include a new prediction framework that can estimate the benefit of applying code transformations without actually doing the transformation. We also describe results that demonstrate the benefit of adaptively changing application code for embedded systems to make trade-offs between code size, performance, and power consumption.

In this paper, we propose partitioned cyclic code shift keying (PCCSK) for the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS) by combining a Hadamard matrix and a modified maximal length sequence (MMLS). The proposed approach adaptively increases the transmission data rate within a limited transmission range in the battlefield. By exploiting a new code set as a spreading code and by adopting code selection, the system is easily able to achieve higher spectral efficiency. For additional performance enhancement, we apply adaptive channel coding with PCCSK, and we derive the appropriate code pairs. Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to show the transmission ranges of the proposed scheme, and the results show that PCCSK with adaptive coding can support a higher data rate with a reasonable transmission range.

In this paper, we describe the construction method of a family of irregular rate-compatible low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes by a combination of puncturing and extending techniques. In particular, we introduce a suitable structure for the extended parity-check matrices which preserves the structure of LDPC codes during extensions. Based on this construction, a family of efficient rate-compatible linear-time encodable codes are generated from an optimized irregular mother code of rate 8/13 and information block length k=1024. The rates of the codes vary from 8/10 to 8/19 and employing them in a type-II hybrid ARQ scheme results in a throughput which is only 0.7 dB away from the Shannon limit. This improves over the existing schemes, based on turbo codes and LDPC codes, by up to 0.5 dB.

In this paper, using non-cooperative game theory, we present a joint link adaptation and power control algorithm for GPRS (general packet radio service). We propose a utility model and analytically verify the existence of a Nash equilibrium (NE) in the network. We then propose a solution method and validate our work by simulating a seven-cell distributed system. Non-unique NE are shown to exist. The effects of the key parameters of the game are evaluated. We introduce three figures of merit (FOMs) that express the tradeoff between throughput and energy efficiency for the entire network. The FOMs are used to calculate the optimal values of penalty function parameters and to compare different NE. The proposed scheme is finally compared with another multirate power control technique.
