We consider the problem of modelling a randomly time-varying frequency-selective fading channel as a finite-state Markov channel (FSMC). For a fading channel with two correlated taps and given statistical parameters, the accuracy of an FSMC is assessed by comparing its information rate, when the receiver has ideal channel-state information, to that of the original continuous-valued channel. We show that in order to construct an FSMC with a given desired accuracy, fewer states are required if the correlation between taps is taken into account than if the taps are treated as being independent. These results demonstrate the suitability and accuracy of FSMCs for modelling a time-varying frequency-selective fading channel with memory.

We propose a channel-matched hierarchical table-lookup vector quantizer (CM-HTVQ) which provides some robustness against the channel noise. We use a finite-state channel to model slowly fading channels and propose an adaptive coding scheme to transmit a source over wireless channels. The performance of CM-HTVQ is in general slightly inferior to that of channel-optimized vector quantizer (COVQ) (the performances coincide at some cases); however, the encoder complexity of CM-HTVQ is much less than the encoder complexity of COVQ.

This paper presents our proposals to overcome two problems in applying the adaptive code acquisition scheme to practical systems. At first, a system parameter setting method based on SNR estimation is proposed to obtain near-optimum performance in real environments. Secondly, we propose a novel adaptation algorithm using a sub-filter structure, which enables the fast acquisition required in the practical systems. Simulation results show that the first proposal gives reliable acquisition performance in real situations without severe degradation, and the proposed adaptation algorithm offers 5-6 dB gain compared to the conventional adaptation algorithm for a number of taps of 64.

In the last several years, adaptive codes for fixed-to-variable length and variable-to-fixed length codes have been described. This paper examines two methods for implementing adaptive variable-to-variable length codes, which have not been considered before due to the difficulty of designing optimum variable-to-variable length codes. The two adaptive methods are based on dual-tree codes, where a source tree parses the input sequence into source words and a code tree assigns each source word a code word. One adaptive method uses a single dual-tree code, and uses an algorithm which requires a complex logic circuit to adjust the shape of the source and code trees. The second method, called state-tree codes, uses a fixed pool of dual-tree codes and a state machine to select which dual-tree code is used. State-tree codes require more memory than the first method, but only a trivial logic circuit is needed to implement the codes, which will result in a very fast circuit.< >

The effects of adaptive-rate transmissions and routing on the total throughput of a slow-frequency-hop packet-radio network are considered. adaptive rates are achieved through the use of error-control coding with perfect side information. Both fixed-length codes and variable-length codes are considered. Performance results are obtained for direct transmission (i.e., no routing), two-hop limited routing, and full routing. Each link metric is a function of the amount of interference caused by using the link. We compare the total network throughput for each of these schemes with both fixed-rate and adaptive-rate coding.

Wireless asynchronous transfer mode (WATM) systems have been proposed for future broadband multimedia personal communication. The errors in the wireless channel are characterized by burstier error patterns which are time varying in nature. The cell losses in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) occur mostly due to buffer overflow resulting in burst cell losses. Most of the existing error correcting codes do not adequately account for the burst errors and concentrate only on cell errors rather than cell losses. Hence, they are not suitable for time-varying channels like WATM. Efficient error control for the time-varying channel can be realized with an adaptive coding scheme, which adjusts according to the network characteristics.

In static entropy coding schemes such as static Huffman coding, the data is entropy coded under a fixed probability distribution. These methods are usually referred to as two pass, since the probability distribution is often, but not always, computed from the data in a first pass. In contrast, in the dynamic or adaptive, which is sometimes called one pass, the fixed probability distribution is generally too inefficient to be acceptable. The motivation for this work is to define a quantity corresponding to the intuitive concept of "speed of adaptation". With the use of Bayesian framework and the inefficiency penalty function, adaptation risk is defined, and shown to have the desired properties. Since in an adaptive scheme the probability distribution is not fixed, the adaptation risk serves also the role of the "second order" quantity. Hence coding under fixed adaptation risk can be thought of as the simplest generalization of coding under fixed probability distribution. Of course variable adaptation risk is a valid and interesting possibility. As applications several adaptive coding methods are presented and their adaptation risks are analyzed.

With rapid increase of image resolution in modern video processing and display systems, the bandwidth and power consumption of external memory are becoming serious bottlenecks. This problem can be alleviated by high-fidelity embedded compression (EC) techniques for video frame buffers. Classic lossless or near-lossless coding methods like CALIC are ill suited for embedded systems due to their high complexity. In this work, a new, simple infra-frame EC technique based on downsampling and side-information aided upsampling is developed. Through a study of a family of downsampling schemes, an optimal one is found and analyzed for EC. This downsampling scheme gives birth to the new EC technique. The main idea is to first split an image into blocks, and then adaptively choose different down sampling patterns and upsampling methods to code/decode these blocks. For a memory bandwidth reduction of 60%, the proposed EC system can achieve PSNR above 40dB, while allowing very simple, low-cost real-time hardware realization. A noteworthy novelty of this work is compression without entropy coding. The resulting code stream is of fixed-rate, supporting random access to pixel blocks.

Link adaptation techniques, such as power control and adaptive coding and modulation, aim at maximizing the resource utilization in wireless networks. However, fair resource allocation must be taken into consideration, particularly in fixed broadband wireless access networks. The low/no mobility of users in such networks leads to location-dependent resource utilization, which can cause a significant variation in the performance from one user to another. For instance, adaptive coding and modulation schemes increase the average throughput in the network; however, they also increase the variation of the throughput. This is because users with good link quality always have high throughput, while users with bad link quality always have low throughput. The fairness and efficiency of various link adaptation techniques are analyzed. The analyzed algorithms are selected as a representative set of different link adaptation techniques with various fairness and efficiency characteristics.

Sample-based (or adaptive) block codes represent a transitional case: while the exact parameters of a source are not known, one can obtain finite length sequences of symbols (or samples) produced by this source in the past. It turns out, that using such samples it is possible to construct codes that are more efficient in encoding this particular source than pure universal codes. In order to be able to compare adaptive codes and codes for a known source more precisely one clearly needs to know the exact expression of an O (1/n). Obtaining the exact expression for this and subsequent terms describing the average behavior of adaptive block codes is the main goal of this paper.
