Unlike the uniform treatment of symbols in different locations of an input file, a new approach is taken in the weighted dynamic compression method suggested in [1], which assigns higher priority to closer to be encoded symbols by means of an increasing weight function. The weighted method is especially suited for the encoding of files with locally skewed distributions. Empirical results have shown that weighted techniques can improve beyond the lower bound given by the entropy for static encoding.

In wireless feedback control systems, it is important how to reduce packet losses. If channel coding is used, packet losses may decrease. But its redundancy decreases the packet transmission rate under the same bit rate, so that disturbances in the controlled plant may deteriorate the quality of the control system. To improve the quality of the control system, the channel coding should be used adaptively based on packet losses and disturbances. In this paper, we propose an adaptive coding scheme based on the quality of the communication layer and the control (application) layer. In this scheme, the channel coding is used adaptively based on a predicted state of the controlled plant under a packet loss rate. We show that the proposed adaptive coding improves the control quality compared with that of the fixed rate coding.

The paper addresses the study on the influence of navigation data transfer in the quadcopter group on the quality of multi-agent system performance. The task of group flight for the purpose of monitoring the earth's surface is considered as a group mission. To transmit navigation data via a binary communication channel, the adaptive coding procedure is used. In this paper, different data rates are considered, and possible data loss during transmission is also assumed. The paper presents numerical simulation results, which are compared with the available theoretical statements.

In this paper, the challenges and problems for the in-band and off-band adaptive coding will be studied. To provide the agile and fast in-band adaptive coding, the information of the channel is inserted as the preamble into the each frame. Pseudorandom noise is utilized as the preamble and it is distributed and updated by the SDN controller to the transmitters and the receivers. Deploying the parallel preamble mapping distributed by the SDN controller is not only for the channel synchronization and the clock recovery but also for serving the in-band adaptive coding. The proposed scheme for the cross-layer design of the centralized SDN controller for the adaptive coding system is demonstrated and discussed. The proposed adaptive coding system is implemented and tested in the 100Gbps DP-QPSK fiber-optics transmission system. The performances of the system with different codes and adaptive scheme in the system are examined and plotted. Also, the time-domain analysis for the LDPCs changing is performed to demonstrate its operational features based on the different channel conditions signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). By deploying the pseudonoise preamble detection, the system enables the rapidly in-band adaptive coding service with low overhead and short guard time. The cross-layer SDN controlling scheme, for updating the mapping between preamble and codes, provides the agile and robust service in the fiber-optics network.

This report proposes a new coding method, which realizes lossless, near-lossless and lossy coding with a unified single algorithm. The method is based on a lifting-structured lossless DCT, which maps an "integer" input vector to also an "integer" output vector. The proposed method can be used as not only a high performance "lossless" encoder but also a "lossy" encoder compatible to conventional DCT-based methods such as JPEG and MPEG. In addition, it has a "near-lossless" mode in which compression ratio is better than lossless mode remaining quite good quality of decoded images. In "lossless" mode, only the lossless DCT and an entropy coder are used. In "lossy" mode, transformed coefficients are quantized and then entropy coded in the same manner as a conventional method for compatibility. In "near-lossless" mode, signals are quantized before DCT to avoid SNR degradation due to "rounding" operations in the lossless DCT.

To improve the quality of the control systems, the channel coding should be used adaptively based on packet losses and disturbances. In this paper, we propose an adaptive coding scheme based on the quality of the communication layer and the control (application) layer. In this scheme, the channel coding is used adaptively to minimize the tracking error of the controlled plant. We show that the proposed adaptive coding scheme improves the reference tracking performance of the control system compared with that with fixed rate coding.

This paper suggests a scheme of adaptive coding and prediction for a case where a source generates letters from an alphabet with unknown (and even infinite) size. This scheme can be applied along with any predictor; here we use the Laplace predictor as the main example. We consider a case of prediction for i.i.d. sources, but all results can be easily extended to Markov sources. The suggested scheme is described using the tree notation.

In order to achieve adaptive coding, the type-II hybrid ARQ protocol is applied to a slotted direct-sequence spread-spectrum multiple-access (DS-SSMA) packet radio system with a finite number of users. Two-dimensional Markov chains are employed to model the system dynamics. Based on this model, the performance of the type-II hybrid ARQ protocol is upper and lower bounded by considering, respectively, a superior scheme and an inferior scheme. The steady state throughput and delay performance of the two bounding schemes are obtained. Moreover, the optimal retransmission policy is found for each fixed input load.

In the last decade the growth of wireless communication has been rapid. One critical issue in wireless systems is the efficient encoding of data to ensure correctness in the presence of noise and multipath fading. We propose some encoding schemes which span the FEC/ARQ spectrum and analyze them with respect to throughput and delay. We conclude with an adaptive algorithm for choosing the optimal encoding scheme based on observed error rates.

The exploitation of adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) techniques for the forward link (satellite-to-user) of broadband communication satellites operating at Ka-band and above has been shown to theoretically provide large system capacity gains. In this article, the problem of how to accurately estimate the time variant channel and to adapt the physical layer mitigating the effects of estimator errors and propagation delays is analyzed. A comprehensive system simulator is then developed to assess the performance of the proposed solution and the impact on outage probability and system capacity due to estimation errors.
