Arithmetic coding has become an important and efficient lossless compression technique for image coding. Multiplication free arithmetic coding algorithms provide excellent tradeoff between operation complexity and coding performance. This paper presents a whole family of multiplication free arithmetic codes which achieve the best coding efficiency and can be used for arbitrary size alphabets. This is accomplished by studying the effects of truncation and rounding in the sub-intervals for approximations. The complete tradeoff between the complexity of operations and compression performance of all the algorithms is presented. The conclusive study shows that there will be no more practical multiplication free arithmetic codes.

Digital satellite broadcasting, primarily targeted to unidirectional services, soon expanded to the interactive domain, utilising uplink technologies such as DVB-RCS. In this context, due to their wide and uniform coverage, satellites can provide an ideal medium for the provision of triple play services (voice, video and data) to remote areas not covered by terrestrial infrastructures. This paper discusses and demonstrates the delivery of triple play services over a fully functional platform utilising the second-generation satellite broadcasting technology (DVB-S2) for the downlink combined with DVB-RCS for the uplink.

The TCP efficiency degradation in high delay- bandwidth product and error-prone channels is a well-known problem. To reduce this degradation, we utilized a hybrid wireless network architecture, where a geostationary bent-pipe satellite channel is used for forward high bit-rate transmissions, while the return link is realized through a terrestrial 3G segment. The performance of four of the most popular TCP versions are tested and compared via simulations in terms of goodput. Our aim is choosing which version performs better by using an adaptive coding and Modulation (ACM) technique, both alone and together with an Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) scheme of the Selective Repeat (SR) type. ARQ is used with and without transmit and receive timeouts. The obtained results show that such a hybrid architecture is advantageous for TCP transmissions in terms of average goodput, and that ACM is effective only if used together with ARQ schemes.

[Summary form only given]. The best methods of text compression work by conditioning each symbol's probability on its predecessors. Prior symbols establish a context that governs the probability distribution for the next one, and the actual. The next symbol is encoded with respect to this distribution. However, the best predictors for words in natural language are not necessarily their immediate predecessors. Verbs may depend on nouns, pronouns on names, closing brackets on opening ones, question marks on "wh"-words. To establish a more appropriate dependency structure, the lexical attraction of a pair of words is defined as the likelihood that they will appear (in that order) within a sentence, regardless of how far apart they are. This is estimated by counting the co-occurrences of words in the sentences of a large corpus. Then, for each sentence, an undirected (planar, acydic) graph is found that maximizes the lexical attraction between linked items, effectively reorganizing the text in the form of a low-entropy model. We encode a series of linked sentences and transmit them in the same manner as order-1 word-level PPM. To prime the lexical attraction linker, the whole document is processed to acquire the co-occurrence counts, and again to re-link the sentences. Pairs that occur twice or less are excluded from the statistics, which significantly reduces the size of the model. The encoding stage utilizes an adaptive PPM-style method. Encouraging results have been obtained using this method.

The channel state of a satellite RF link is best provided as the Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) estimate of the received signal. This form of channel state is utilised by satellite capacity optimization techniques like adaptive coding and Modulation (ACM), which comes under the hood of Fade Mitigation Techniques (FMT). The performance of the SNR estimation algorithm, used as the channel state estimator, directly impacts the efficiency of the FMT. In this paper we analyse the contemporary SNR estimation algorithms considering only the rain attenuation as the fading process. Their performances are quantified in terms of the number of received symbols needed to obtain an estimate with a given error margin. Their suitability as a channel state estimator for a typical DVB type satellite system is analysed by considering the various assumptions involved in the algorithm, the effect of noise due to interference as encountered in such systems on the estimation algorithm.

To facilitate the efficient execution of scientific programs, parallelizing compilers apply a wide range of loop transformations. In some situations it may not be possible to determine the applicability and usefulness of the transformations at compile time. We develop adaptive versions of various loop transformations which lend themselves to efficient application at run time. instead of explicitly applying a transformation at compile time, we generate adaptive code which is able to behave like the transformed code, if so desired, at run time. Therefore an adaptive program can be viewed as expressing multiple ways of executing a program. The selection of the particular execution is based upon run time information. adaptive programs offer a more practical and powerful alternative to multiversion programs.

Molecular communication (MC) is a promising technique to enable the communication among nanomachines for various applications in healthcare industry such as targeted drug delivery. In this paper, we focus on the intersymbol interference (ISI) problem in diffusion-based MC. In this kind of communication, the ISI is notably influenced by communication distance and code width. On this basis, we propose an adaptive code width (ACW) protocol to mitigate the intersymbol interference. In this protocol, a 'distance feedback' is used to measure the communication distance. We adopt a signal attenuation model to accomplish this task. According to the measured distance, the transmitter can adapt the modulation using an appropriate code width in order to mitigate the ISI. Moreover, the ACW protocol improves the transmission efficiency when communication distance is short and ISI does not affect bit error rate. Finally it is verified that this protocol is feasible to control the ISI at a low level even when the channel varies due to the mobility of the transceivers.
