Strassen's algorithm has practical performance benefits for architectures with simple memory hierarchies, because it trades computationally expensive matrix multiplications (MM) with cheaper matrix additions (MA). However, it presents no advantages for high-performance architectures with deep memory hierarchies, because MAs exploit limited data reuse. We present an easy-to-use adaptive algorithm combining Strassen's recursion and high-tuned version of ATLAS MM. In fact, we introduce a last step in the ATLAS-installation process that determines whether Strassen's may achieve any speedup. We present a recursive algorithm achieving up to 30% speed-up versus ATLAS alone. We show experimental results for 14 different systems

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes offer a very powerful error correction technique which allows data transmission in wireless networks at rates near the channel capacity with arbitrarily low probability of error. In this paper, we design a class of linearly encodable LDPC codes with adaptive code rates, i.e. the code rate can be adapted according to channel conditions to maximize the total capacity. Since a unique mother parity check matrix is used to construct LDPC codes with several code rates, the great advantage of the proposed codes is that a single universal encoder (decoder) is adequate to encode (decode) multi-rate codes, which makes it possible to efficiently implement multi-rate LDPC codes in a subscriber station. The implementation results into field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices indicate that a universal layered encoder for LDPC codes with 9 code rates is capable of reaching a throughput above 1.2 Gigabit per second by using 138 exclusive- OR gates and a master clock of 100 MHz. By combining multilevel modulation with the designed multi-rate LDPC codes, a transmission scheme with adaptive spectral efficiency is proposed. The simulation results indicate that the schemes with a spectral efficiency of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 bits/symbol/Hz can achieve extremely reliable transmission in a Rayleigh fading channel at signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) per bit of 5, 6, 10, 14, and 16 dB, respectively.

Spread adaptive quadrature amplitude modulation (AQAM) is proposed as a powerful means of exploiting the time variant channel capacity fluctuations of wireless channels and studied in comparison to the variable spreading factor (VSF) method. These two adaptive rate transmission methods are compared in the context of joint detection and interference cancellation assisted adaptive code division multiple access (ACDMA) systems. More explicitly, these exploit the time-variant channel quality of mobile channels by switching either the modulation mode (AQAM) or the spreading factor (VSF) on a burst-by-burst basis. The most appropriate modulation mode or spreading factor is chosen based on the instantaneous channel quality estimated. The chosen AQAM mode or spreading factor is communicated to the remote receiver either through explicit signalling or extracted at the receiver using blind detection techniques. The multiuser joint detector (JD) and the successive interference cancellation (SIC) receiver are compared in the context of these adaptive schemes with the conclusion that JD outperformed the SIC receiver in the ACDMA schemes, at the cost of increased complexity.

Summary form only given. Dismal performance often results when the memory requirements of a process exceed the physical memory available to it. Moreover, significant throughput reduction is experienced when this process is part of a synchronous parallel job on a nondedicated computational cluster. A possible solution is to develop programs that can dynamically adapt their memory usage according to the current availability of physical memory. We explore this idea on scientific computations that perform repetitive data accesses. Part of the program's data set is cached in resident memory, while the remainder that cannot fit is accessed in an "out-of-core" fashion from disk. The replacement policy can be user defined. This allows for a graceful degradation of performance as memory becomes scarce. To dynamically adjust its memory usage, the program must reliably answer whether there is a memory shortage or surplus in the system. Because operating systems typically export limited memory information, we develop a parameter-free algorithm that uses no system information beyond the resident set size (RSS) of the program. Our resulting library can be called by scientific codes with little change to their structure or with no change at all, if computations are already "blocked" for reasons of locality. Experimental results with both sequential and parallel versions of a memory-adaptive conjugate-gradient linear system solver show substantial performance gains over the original version that relies on the virtual memory system. Furthermore, multiple instances of the adaptive code can coexist on the same node with little interference with one another.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) gives a communication system that can adapt to varying channel conditions and provide reliable communication at a wider range of signal to noise-ratios (SNRs). We investigate how the number of available transmission rates in the ACM scheme impacts communication performance and feedback requirements. To accommodate for the various rates in the ACM system we use serial concatenated trellis-coded modulation (SCTCM) consisting of a rate-compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) code or a woven serial concatenated convolutional (WSCC) code, both with a rate-1 inner accumulate code and mapping to a Gray-labeled signal constellation. We show that significant reductions in complexity and corresponding savings in protocol overhead can be obtained without significant performance degradation. It is shown that an equal spacing of available rates over the expected range of SNRs is preferable to an uneven spacing.

Consider the following scenario: A data storage service provider provides an erasure code based distributed storage system (DSS). For the same data, the service provider gives several options: an (n i , k i ) erasure code based DSS for i = 1,2, ..., m. The service provider charges differently for different options (say dollar Pi for an (n i , k i ) erasure code based DSS for the data B of size |B|). A client had initially chosen for an (n i , k i ) erasure code based DSS. At some point of time, the client wants to change for another option, say for an (n j , k j ) erasure code based DSS for the same data, where 1≤ i, j ≤ m, i ≠ j. Thus, service provider would require to convert the (n i , k i ) erasure code based DSS into an (n j , k j ) erasure code based DSS. The service provider has the following problem: How to design an erasure code based DSS so that the conversion of an (n i , k i ) erasure code based DSS into an (n j , k j ) erasure code based DSS, for 1 ≤ i, j ≤ m, i ≠ j, can be done by downloading the minimum amount of data? In this paper, we present an adaptive coding scheme which requires to download the minimum amount of data while converting an (n i , k i ) erasure code based DSS to an (n j , k j ) erasure code based DSS, where 1 ≤ i, j ≤ m, i ≠ j.

This paper presents a hybrid compression method for a compound image including characters, graphics, and photos. Such kind of image is popular as Web contents or TV game images. We use usually JPEG to compress it, but the DCT compression like JPEG causes strong mosquito distortion around the contours of characters or graphics because of their strong edge intensity. Therefore we need high quality and low bitrate coding scheme for the compound image. Our hybrid compression method is based on region separation and adaptive coding. This method separates synthetic image region and natural image region according to each features, i.e., edge intensity and color deviation. Then our method encodes synthetic region by runlength coding, and natural region by JPEG respectively from the viewpoint of visual quality and coding efficiency. Our hybrid compression method provides good performance for the compound images compared with JPEG. This method can remarkably reduce mosquito distortion around the contours of character or graphics. Experimental results show +5 to +10 dB improvement of the SNR over JPEG.

Third generation wireless systems typically employ adaptive coding and modulation, scheduling, and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) techniques to provide high speed packet data service on the downlink. One important consideration in designing such a system is algorithm for the selection of coding and modulation schemes based on the channel quality of the link. We propose a systematic approach to optimize the mapping between signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SIlSR) and modulation and coding scheme (MCS) to maximize the throughput that takes into account the type of HARQ scheme employed. Extensive simulation results comparing performance of the proposed methods to conventional methods are presented.

In this paper, we compare Time Division and Carrier Sense Multiple Access schemes (TDMA and CSMA) in a Signal to Noise and Interference Ratio (SINR)-based model. We assume that the network nodes are distributed a Poisson process evenly distributed and have pending packets. First we study the distribution of the SINR in TDMA-based protocols where the same time-slot is reserved in given radius of n hops (n = 2 in most of these protocols). The same study is carried for CSMA-based access protocols where the reuse is controlled with the carrier-sense threshold. We then compare the total throughput of TDMA and CSMA based access protocols in an outage model. In this model a packet is considered as correctly received if its SINR is above a given threshold. Finally, we conduct the same comparison between TDMA and CSMA-based access protocols in a model of adaptive coding. In this model, the actual SINR rules the transmission coding. We idealize the performance of this technique using the Shannon's well know formula W = W_0log(1 ＋ SINR).

In recent years, the distinctive advancement of handling huge data promotes the evolution of ubiquitous computing and analysis technologies. With the constantly upward system burden and computational complexity, adaptive coding has been a fascinating topic for pattern analysis, with outstanding performance. In this work, a continuous hashing method, termed continuous random hashing (CRH), is proposed to encode sequential data stream, while ignorance of previously hashing knowledge is possible. Instead, a random selection idea is adopted to adaptively approximate the differential encoding patterns of data stream, e.g., streaming media, and iteration is avoided for stepwise learning. Experimental results demonstrate our method is able to provide outstanding performance, as a benchmark approach to continuous hashing.
