Two systems are presented for compression of hyperspectral imagery. These systems utilize adaptive classification, trellis-coded quantization, and optimal rate allocation. In the first system, DPCM is used for spectral decorrelation, while an adaptive wavelet-based coding scheme is used for spatial decorrelation. The second system uses DPCM in conjunction with an adaptive DCT-based coding scheme. In each system, entropy-constrained trellis-coded quantization (ECTCQ) is used to quantize the transform coefficients. Entropy-constrained codebooks are designed for generalized Gaussian distributions by using a modified version of the generalized Lloyd algorithm. The wavelet-based system compresses an AVIRIS hyperspectral test sequence at 0.118 bits/pixel/band, while retaining an average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of 41.24 dB. The DCT-based system achieves the same bit rate with an average PSNR of 40.72 dB.

Multiresolution (MR) representations have been very successful in image encoding, due to both their algorithmic performance and coding efficiency. However these transforms are fixed, suggesting that coding efficiency could be further improved if a multiresolution code could be adapted to a specific signal class. Among adaptive coding methods, independent component analysis (ICA) provides the best linear code by finding a linear transform with maximally independent coefficients, given a specific signal distribution. This technique, however, scales poorly with the dimensionality of the data, and has been ill-suited for large-scale image coding. We propose a hybrid method (multi-resolution ICA) which derives an ICA basis for each subband space produced by a given MR transform over the image class. We find that this method produces a significantly more efficient code compared to the MR transform alone. We provide both quantitative and qualitative assessments of coding performance, and illustrate improvement over standard (i.e., non-adaptive) wavelet-based representations such as that used in JPEG2000.

Alternative protocols are presented for adapting the code from packet to packet in a mobile, wireless, ad hoc network that employs frequency hopping, coherent or noncoherent demodulation, and soft-decision decoding on channels with time-varying partial-band interference. The protocols are implemented in subsystems that are external to the demodulator and soft-decision decoder, so they can be employed with a wide range of codes and decoding algorithms. No channel measurements are needed and no external side information is supplied to the receiver. Performance results are provided for packet transmissions that employ turbo product codes. Protocol performance is compared with capacity limits and with an ideal protocol that uses perfect channel state information for the most recent packet transmission to select the code that maximizes the expected throughput.

The effective implementation of adaptive coding and modulation for the reverse (user-to-satellite) link of broadband satellite systems, operating at Ka-band and above, calls for the resolution of a number of problems. The many-to-one reverse link nature and the related distributed interference characteristics make efficient and robust link adaptation challenging, particularly when in the presence of bursty traffic and time varying propagation conditions. In this paper, a channel estimation and adaptation algorithm, suitable for the system under analysis, are devised and their performance investigated in a Ka-band multibeam system study case for different multiple access schemes.

Protocols for adapting the rate of an error-control code in direct-sequence or frequency-hop spread-spectrum packet radio networks are evaluated for static channels and channels with time-varying parameters that are modeled as finite-state Markov chains. The performance of our protocols is compared with the performance of an ideal protocol that has perfect channel-state information and employs a set of capacity-achieving codes of the same rates as the codes available to our protocols. The statistics used by our protocols for adaptation are derived from the demodulator and decoder in the receiving radio, and they are provided to the transmitting radio by a few bits that are included in each acknowledgment packet

The problem of predicting a sequence generated by a discrete source with unknown statistics is considered. This problem is of great importance for data compression, because of its use to estimate probability distributions for PPM algorithms and other adaptive codes. This paper suggested a scheme of adaptive coding (and prediction) for a case where a source generates letters from an alphabet with unknown or infinite size. This scheme can be applied along with Laplace, Krichevsky and any other predictors. The general case of the prediction, which is based on such a grouping, is considered and the estimates of the redundancy are given.

This paper envisages data transmissions in a low-mobility wireless local area network based on a DS-CDMA air interface. A Rayleigh fading channel and suitable Internet-like traffic model have been envisaged to study the impact of the closed-loop power control on an adaptive coding scheme. The following quality of service (QoS) parameters have been considered in this study: the mean datagram transmission delay and the mean transmission energy per useful bit. We have obtained that our proposed adaptive coding scheme permits one to avoid the use of closed-loop fast power control. Such choice permits one to improve both previous QoS parameters, so allowing an efficient management of radio resources.

We consider coding and edulation schemes for direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DS-SS) systems with multiple-access (MA) interference in a fading environment. Our goal is to be able to adapt the code to different environments. Communication in an environment with a large amount of interference will require a lower transmission (code) rate while small levels of interference will allow a high rate transmission. The following coded modulation systems are considered: a conventional 64-ary orthogonal (M/sub 64/) code, the trellis coded Nordstrom-Robinson (TCNR) code, and the trellis coded Reed-Muller (TCRM) code. Each of these is concatenated with a (63, k) Reed-Solomon (RS) outer code. The performance measure of interest is the error probability and throughput. These are evaluated by making a Gaussian approximation on the multiple-access interference. Our results show, given an error probability requirement, and a certain data rate, a maximum number of users for each of the three DS-SS schemes can be determined. This indicates the receiver can adjust the coding and modulation scheme to achieve the given requirement.

An adaptive forward error control and modulation scheme is proposed for slow Rayleigh fading channels. The adaptive scheme employs a family of RS codes of different rates and multiple phase shift keying (MPSK) modulation schemes according to the states of the channel. This uses a channel estimator to select the most appropriate codulation (coded-modulation) scheme. Simulation results show that the adaptive scheme gives significant improvement in the BER and throughput performance.

Hybrid free space optical (FSO)/RF communication systems can provide high throughput short range ¿lastmile¿ connectivity. Since channel conditions are highly variable, adaptive symbol rate and modulation schemes are attractive for this application to make better use of available resources. This paper focuses on the information-theoretic analysis of such FSO/RF systems and introduces an adaptive communication scheme resulting in a capacity-approaching and seamless joint system. Numerical and simulation results give insight into the relation between adaptive parameters and system performance, and provide guidance for the design of a practical hybrid system.
