In this paper, it is presented a detailed description of a proposal of an effective image encoder suitable for hardware realizations. A modelling block based on the blending prediction method and an encoding block performing a contextual, adaptivearithmetic encoding are proposed. The encoding operation in both lossless and near-lossless modes are described. It is analyzed how to lossless transform colours to obtain the best solution. An effectiveness analysis is also done by comparison of the compression rate of the proposed method with another hardware realization and a number of software implementations known from literature. Some suggestions are made regarding the implementation of the algorithm as the video sequence encoding system working in the real-time utilizing an efficient Network on Chip architecture.

The paper presents a lossless coding method based on predictor blending approach that codes nine widely used benchmark images with the lowest average bitrate ever published. At the same time the algorithm is more time efficient than its most important competitors: TMWLEGO, MRP 0.5, and Multi-WLS. A set of 20 blended predictors is applied, including adaptive RLS/OLS ones, ALCM, CoBALP, and a texture context mapping one. A sophisticated error bias removal method is applied to outputs from few of them. Prediction error is coded using an advanced adaptive context arithmetic coder.

Predictors are adaptive, enhanced RLS coefficient update formula is implemented. A stage of NLMS prediction is added. Prediction error bias is removed using a robust multi-source approach. An advanced adaptive context arithmetic coder is applied. Experimental results show that indeed, the new coder is both more effective and faster than other state-of-the-art algorithms.

In the paper a lossless image coding method intended for real-time hardware intra-frame video coding system is described. Data modeling stage of the method is based on predictor blending idea, the following entropy coding stage is realized as an advanced adaptive context arithmetic coder. The stages can be separated by a quantizer, in which case the coder is becoming a near-lossless one. Experiments show that indeed, the new algorithm is not only time efficient, but has also excellent data compression performance.
