Recent developments in the field of loss-of-control recovery and prevention included improved pilot training, cockpit automation, and fault-tolerant control. The Flight Mechanics Action Group on Fault-Tolerant control of the Group for Aeronautical Research and Technology in Europe demonstrated the advantages of fault-tolerant "intelligent," flight control systems. The research enabled the improvement of the technology readiness level of these systems by evaluating one of them in realistic operational scenarios. The handling qualities results of a piloted flight simulator assessment with a damaged aircraft model showed that an online physical model identification approach contributed to improved pilot performance following potentially catastrophic structural and flight critical system failures. After the failures and subsequent control reconfiguration by the intelligent flight control system, airline and engineering test pilots experienced no difficulties in conducting a safe approach and landing.

Envelope-Aware Flight Management for Loss of control Prevention Given Rudder Jam

The Envelope-Aware Flight Management System is an augmentation to a conventional flight management system that prevents or recovers from loss of control. Loss of control is defined in this work as an excursion outside the admissible flight envelope. The Envelope-Aware Flight Management System combines flight safety assessment and management, envelope estimation, flight planning, system identification, and adaptive control functions. This paper describes integration of envelope estimation, flight planning, and flight safety assessment and management to identify situations of high loss-of-control risk, override the nominal crew/flight-management-system just in time to prevent loss of control, and safely recover the aircraft. The Envelope-Aware Flight Management System is applied to prevent in-flight loss of control for a Twin Otter experiencing a rudder jam, a failure that can be identified and modeled a priori. Recovery translates to identifying and maintaining states within the contracted flight envelope, as well as building and following an emergency landing plan that respects the new envelope.

Because of their unique properties and good performance, some elastic components, such as the harmonic reducers and the torque sensors, are widely used in the joints of the space robots and manipulators, in order to obtain high reduction ratio. However these elastic components bring joint flexibility into the system at the same time, which makes its stability control more complex. Based on this, this paper discussed radial basis function neural network adaptive control and elastic vibration suppression for flexible-joint space robots, it worked under the unknown parameter. Firstly, mathematical models which been suit for design of control system are established by using a joint flexibility compensation controller, the model composed of the slow-subsystem robot dynamics model and and the fast-subsystem dynamics model is deduced by the second type of Lagrange method. Then, for the dynamic model of the fast-subsystem dynamics model, the torque differential feedback control algorithm is adopted to the premise that the ultimate doundedness of system, for the slow -subsystem robot dynamics model, the radial basis function neural network adaptive control algorithm is designed to to track the desired trajectory in joint space. The whole control system is superposed by the slow-subsystem and the fast-subsystem control algorithm. The system simulation comparison test proves the effectiveness of said algorithm.

Advantage of cooperative traffic light control algorithms

Contemporary traffic light control systems rely on sensors for detection of traffic which are costly in purchase, installation and maintenance. Emerging cooperative technology offers an attractive alternative where only one road side unit per intersection is required, instead of several infrastructure sensors per lane. However, studies showed that traffic control with cooperative detection requires a penetration rate of at least 20% to function effectively. To show the potential of cooperative traffic control, this study presents three algorithms: (i) the SWARM control algorithm, which is designed to work with very low penetration rates;(ii) an extension to the adaptive control algorithm, ImFlow, which uses cooperative data for enhanced queue modelling;and (iii) an ImFlow extension to stabilise green planning to enable green light optimal speed advice. The results from micro-simulation show a 7.8% improvement for stops and delay time over traditional adaptive control for Swarm, and 14.9% for Cooperative ImFlow. Adding planning stabilisation reduced the average perceived change for end users from 9.0-2.3%, without performance loss for the overall traffic flow. This shows the large potential of cooperative traffic control.

A two-observer scheme has been proposed using higher-order sliding mode algorithms for a general second-order system with a time-varying, uncertain, unknown parameter. The first observer was used for the varying parameter estimation and using knowledge of this estimated parameter, and the state estimation by second observer was found to be exact. Supertwisting algorithms provide robust, noise-free, finite-time convergent state estimations. The proposed scheme was found to yield accurate and fast converging estimates of the line-of-sight (LOS) rates of the missile system. LOS rate estimates are robust against coupled acceleration disturbance terms. The proposed method for fixed-time parameter estimation and robust state estimation can be used for a class of second-order systems and can be extended to any uncertain plant.

Robust adaptive Coordination controller for a Spacecraft Equipped with a Robotic Manipulator

Free-flying robotic spacecraft play a significant role in the space industry today. Unlike ground-based robots, the manipulator motion in a space robot can cause undesirable disturbances to the spacecraft platform, causing its attitude to change, potentially disrupting communication and solar energy collection processes as a result. Thus, coordinated control of both the spacecraft attitude and the manipulator motion become essential for successful space operations. Though past research has developed dynamic models for spacecraft manipulators, the contribution of reaction wheels to the angular momentum of the entire system needs further consideration. This paper reformulates the dynamic equations of a free-flying space robot by taking the aspect of reaction wheels into account. A diagonalization method is introduced to decouple the highly nonlinear multi-input/ multi-output system model. A novel adaptive variable structure control method is then applied to implement a robust coordination controller for the space robot subjected to system uncertainties. Simulations are carried out on a spacecraft model with a 3-degree-of-freedom manipulator mounted on it to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed approach. Comparisons with sliding mode control show that the new controller results in faster settling times, which leads to maintaining uninterrupted communication links and efficient solar energy harvesting.

Investigation of real-time adaptive energy management strategy for a series-parallel hybrid electric bus

To improve fuel economy of a novel series-parallel hybrid electric bus (SPHEB) further, the control rule of battery power distribution is derived from the offline optimisation algorithm based on Pontryagin's minimum principle, internal relationship between the equivalence fuel factor. and trend of state of charge (SOC) with different driving condition is established and calculation model of SOC is formed. On the basis of the above, according to the feature of the city bus driving cycle, the algorithm of adaptive fuzzy sliding-mode control (AFSMC) is introduced to periodically update the equivalence fuel factor, and then the power-balancing adaptive control strategy is developed. To validate the proposed strategy rationality, the hardware in-the-loop integrated with bench test is applied to compare the proposed control strategy with the previous optimal control strategy. The results indicate that the efficiency of SPHEB system is improved by the proposed control strategy.

Although adaptive control schemes for spacecraft attitude tracking are abundant in controls literature, very few are designed to guarantee consistent performance for a spacecraft with both rigid and nonrigid (time-varying) inertia components. Because inertia matrix changes are a common occurrence due to phenomena like fuel depletion or mass displacement in a deployable spacecraft, an adaptive control algorithm that takes explicit account of such information is of significant interest. In this paper, a novel adaptive attitude control scheme is presented for a spacecraft with inertia matrix parameters that have both unknown rigid components and only partially determined variable components. The proposed controller directly compensates for inertia variations that occur as either pure functions of the control input, or as functions of time. For the particular case of an input-dependent inertia matrix, a bounded control solution is ensured by placing some mild restrictions on the initial conditions and by employing a smooth projection scheme that confines the parameter estimates to a well-dMefined convex set. Detailed derivations of the control law are provided, along with a thorough analysis for the associated stability and error convergence properties. In addition, numerical simulations are presented to highlight the performance benefits when compared with an adaptive control scheme that does not account for inertia variations.

On the base of research on real time transport protocol and real time transport control protocol (RTP/RTCP), a flow adaptive control algorithm was proposed. The new algorithm chooses different growth factors according to the current state of the network. It aims at enhancing the stabilization of RTP flow, decreasing the jitter and utilizing network bandwidth efficiently.
