Understanding spectrum activity is challenging when attempted at scale. The wireless community has recently risen to this challenge in designing spectrum monitoring systems that utilize many low-cost spectrum sensors to gather large volumes of sampled data across space, time, and frequencies. These crowdsensing systems are limited by the uplink bandwidth available to backhaul the raw in-phase and quadrature (IQ) samples and power spectrum density (PSD) data needed to run various applications. This paper presents FlexSpec, a framework based on the Walsh-Hadamard transform to compress spectrum data collected from distributed and low-cost sensors for real-time applications. This transformation allows sensors to significantly save uplink bandwidth thanks to its inherent properties both when it is applied to IQ and PSD data. Additionally, by leveraging a feedback loop between the sensor and the edge device it connects to, FlexSpec carefully adapts the compression ratio over time to changes in the spectrum and different applications, jointly considering data size, application performance, and spectrum variations. We experimentally evaluate FlexSpec in several applications. Our results show that FlexSpec is particularly suitable for IoT transmissions and signals close to the noise floor. Compared with prior work, FlexSpec provides up to $7\times $ more reduction of uplink data size for signal detection based on PSD data, and reduces up to $6\times $ to $8\times $ the number of undecodable messages for IQ sample decoding.

This paper proposes a power and area efficient Laplacian Pyramid processing engine (LPPE) for real-time portable image/video processing applications. On the architecture level, an adaptive data compression technique is proposed to reduce the power and area of FIFOs in the LPPE while maintaining small mean square error (MSE). A new filtering extension method is proposed to reduce the output errors caused by image boundary pixels. On the circuit level, near-threshold operation is adopted to further reduce the power consumption. The proposed LPPE is fabricated in 0.18-mu m CMOS process technology and consumes only 452 mu W/frame with a clock frequency of 3.68MHz and 112 frames per second at 0.5 V. The area is reduced by 18.98%-36.06% compared to conventional counterpart.

A data compression system capable of providing real-time streaming of high-resolution continuous point-on-wave (CPOW) and phasor measurement unit (PMU) measurements is proposed. Referred to as adaptive subband compression (ASBC), the proposed technique partitions the signal space into subbands and adaptively compresses subband signals based on each subband's active bandwidth. The proposed technique conforms to existing industry phasor measurement standards, making it suitable for streaming high-resolution CPOW and PMU data either in continuous or burst on-demand/event-triggered modes. Experiments on synthetic and real data show that ASBC reduces the CPOW sampling rates by several orders of magnitude for real-time streaming while maintaining the precision required by industry standards.

Human digital twin (HDT) is envisioned as a system interconnecting physical twins (PTs) in the real world with virtual twins (VTs) in the digital world, enabling advanced human-centric applications. In this paper, we study an optimization of quality of experience (QoE) aware multi-modal signal transmission, particularly focusing on joint visual and haptic signal feedback transmissions from VT to its PT, for providing immersive interactions in HDT. To evaluate a synthesized performance of both visual and haptic experiences, we design a comprehensive QoE model, taking into account the video quality, continuous video quality switching rate and average haptic feedback error. Then, to maximize such QoE with a particular guarantee on synchronization between visual and haptic signal transmissions, we dynamically optimize the bandwidth allocation, bitrate and rendering mode of the video, and haptic signal's compression threshold. To this end, we propose a deep reinforcement learning based algorithm, called VisHap, which can produce an adaptive solution. Furthermore, we build an HDT multi-modal interactions platform for collecting an authentic dataset, and by using it, we conduct experiments, showing that VisHap is not only feasible but also outperforms the counterparts.

A variant of adaptive arithmetic coding is proposed, adding cryptographic features to this classical compression method. The idea is to perform the updates of the frequency tables for characters of the underlying alphabet selectively, according to some randomly chosen secret key K. We give empirical evidence that with reasonably chosen parameters, the compression performance is not hurt, and discuss also aspects of how to improve the security of the system being used as an encryption method. To keep the paper selfcontained, we add a short description of the arithmetic coding algorithm that is necessary to understand the details of the new suggested method. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. This paper describes a waveform compression technique suitable for the efficient utilization, storage and interchange of the emerging current source model (CSM) based cell libraries. The technique is based on pre-processing of a collection of voltage/current waveforms for the cells in the library and then, constructing an orthogonal time-voltage/time-current waveform basis using singular-value decomposition. compression is achieved by representing all waveforms as linear combination coefficients of adaptive subset of the basis waveforms. Experimental results indicate that adaptive waveform representation results in higher compression ratios than the waveform representation as a function of fixed set of basis functions. Interpolation and further compression are obtained by representing the coefficients as simple functions of various parameters, e.g., input slew, load capacitance, supply voltage, and temperature. The methods introduced in this paper are tested and validated on several industrial strength libraries, with spectacular compression results.

An efficient compression scheme for data cpmmunication which uses a new family of self-organizing binary search trees

In this paper, we demonstrate that we can effectively use the results from the field of adaptive self-organizing data structures in enhancing compression schemes. Unlike adaptive lists, which have already been used in compression, to the best of our knowledge, adaptive self-organizing trees have not been used in this regard. To achieve this, we introduce a new data structure, the partitioning binary search tree (PBST) which, although based on the well-known binary search tree (BST), also approximately partitions the data elements into mutually exclusive sets. When used in conjunction with Fano encoding, the PBST leads to the so-called Fano binary search tree (FBST), which, indeed, incorporates the required Fano coding (nearly equal probability) property into the BST. We demonstrate how both the PBST and the FBST can be maintained adaptively and in a self-organizing manner. The updating procedure that converts a PBST into an FBST, and the corresponding new tree-based operators, namely the shift-to-left and the shift-to-right operators, are explicitly presented. The encoding and decoding procedures that also update the FBST have been implemented and rigorously tested. Our empirical results on the tiles of the well-known benchmarks, the Calgary and Canterbury Corpora, show that the adaptive Fano coding using FBSTs, the Huffman, and the greedy adaptive Fano coding achieve similar compression ratios. However, in terms of encoding/decoding speed, the new scheme is much faster than the latter two in the encoding phase, and they achieve approximately the same speed in the decoding phase. We believe that the same philosophy, namely that of using an adaptive self-organizing BST to maintain the frequencies, can also be utilized for other data encoding mechanisms, even as the Fenwick scheme has been used in arithmetic coding. Building entirely digital Holter monitoring systems is now pursued and development of digital electrocardiographs is progressing. Conventional Holter electrocardiographs are devices that record electrocardiograms on magnetic tape in the form of an analog signal, which implies a number of problems related to accuracy (waveform distortion) and vibration of movable parts (such as motors), as well as weight and size of the device. This paper discusses a simple Holter electrocardiograph that converts 24-hour electrocardiograms into digital signals, with provision for noise suppression, elimination of baseline fluctuation, easy diagnostics, storing data on media, and data transfer. An entirely digital design for such a device would contribute to circuit integration and would solve the problem of miniaturization by using IC memory cards as the media. However, to record a digital ECG signal for 24 hours, 64.8 MBytes of memory is required for the standard pattern of 2 channels, 12 bits, and 250-Hz sampling. IC memory cards currently available lack this capacity, and an algorithm for data compression is necessary. In this paper, a simple algorithm is proposed for R-R interval extraction in a compact Holter monitoring system, as well as a data compression algorithm that provides adaptive regulation of compression ratio and accuracy. A NEW SPLITTING STRATEGY FOR adaptive TRANSFORM CODING

In this short communication, a new splitting strategy for variable block-size image coding based on edge information is presented, which allows one to reduce the number of blocks to be encoded, while maintaining an in-depth split in edge areas. The proposed approach has been applied to a standard transform coding algorithm, and results have been compared with those obtained by a classical splitting structure. Tests showed a notable increase in the compression factor, under the same SNR conditions. Reconstructed images are affected by the blocking effect to a smaller extent, as the problem of generating a large number of small blocks in the uniform areas surrounding an edge can be overcome by the new splitting strategy.
