A hybrid adaptive blind equalization algorithm for QAM signals in wireless communications

A hybrid adaptive channel equalization technique for quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals is proposed. The proposed algorithm, which is referred to as the modified constant modulus algorithm (MCMA), minimizes an error cost function that includes both amplitude and phase of the equalizer output. In addition to the amplitude-dependent term that is provided by the conventional constant modulus algorithm (CMA), the cost function includes an additive signal constellation matched error (CME) term. This term can be designed to satisfy a set of desirable properties. The MCMA is compared with the CMA for blind equalization. The performance is measured for wireless channels using both transient and steady-state behavior of the mean square error (MSE). It is shown that MCMA is superior and more robust in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environments. Simulation results demonstrate that using MCMA improves adaptive channel equalization by increasing the convergence rate and decreasing the steady-state mean square error.

A new algorithm for blind equalization is introduced. The square contour algorithm (SCA) minimizes dispersion of equalizer output from a square. The SCA combines the advantages of the generalized Sato algorithm (GSA) and the constant modulus algorithm (CMA). It includes phase recovery and offers good convergence characteristics. By adding a constellation-matched error (CME) term to the cost function of the SCA, a modified SCA (MSCA) is obtained. The MSCA improves equalizer convergence performance. Simulations and analysis demonstrate the good performance of the proposed algorithms. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A dual-mode blind equalization technique for adaptive channel equalization for quadrature amplitude modulation signals is introduced. The equalizer uses the constant modulus algorithm (CMA) in the initial phase and then switches to a proposed constellation-matched error (CME) minimization algorithm at appropriate values of the mean-square error. The proposed CME cost function can be constructed using finite-or infinite-order polynomials with desirable properties over the constellation region. This dual-mode equalization technique is applied to a linear equalizer and is shown to provide superior performance or simplicity over the conventional CMA and some other dual-mode schemes.

A modified constant modulus algorithm (MCMA) algorithm for adaptive channel equalization for QAM signals is proposed. The proposed algorithm minimizes a cost function that consists of amplitude- and phase-dependent terms. The phase term complements the amplitude-dependent term that is provided by the conventional constant modulus algorithm (CMA). This term should satisfy several properties that guarantee extremum values at the QAM signal levels and at maximum deviations from these levels. Further, the properties should allow symmetry and uniformity across all alphabets. It is shown that the even power co-sinusoidal functions are appropriate for phase term representations. The MCMA is compared with the CMA and the Stop-and-Go Algorithm (SGA) for blind equalization. The performance is evaluated for indoor wireless channels using both transient and steady-state behaviors of the mean square error (MSE). A channel model is developed based on spectral observations of the unlicensed U-NII frequency band, and shown to be time-varying and to exhibit frequency selective fading. While the CMA is successful in achieving good performance, it is shown that both MCMA and SGA are superior and more robust in low SNR environments. The paper also presents a performance comparison of symbol-spaced and sample-spaced equalizations for a single and two-antenna receiver. Simulation results demonstrate that using multi-antenna receiver can effectively improve adaptive channel equalizations by increasing convergence rate and decreasing steady-state mean square error.

An adaptive equalization algorithm suitable for CM7.1 channel is proposed to address the problem of channel multipath fading in 60 GHz pulse communication system. The steady-state and bit error rate performances of the proposed algorithm are analyzed based on the traditional LMS and RLS algorithms, combined with the CM7.1 IEEE802.15.3c channel model, and compared with the traditional algorithm. Simulation results show that the algorithm reduces the computational complexity and verifies the feasibility of the algorithm in the 60 GHz pulse communication system with the premise of ensuring system reliability. Technical reference is provided for the application of high-capacity fifth-generation, high-frequency hot new empty scene.

A cost function, utilizing the signal amplitude as well as the phase information, yields fast convergence and small mean square errors, when used for equalizing dynamic wireless channels. Recently, it has been shown that the minimization of cost functions that include both amplitude-dependent and constellation-dependent terms leads to improved receiver performance for high-order signal constellations, compared to that achieved by only using either term. The amplitude-dependent term corresponds to the constant modulus algorithm (CMA), which ensures proper global convergence properties. On the other hand, the constellation-matched error (CME) term provides desirable local convergence properties. Two possible schemes can be used for presenting a combined cost function. One scheme is based on a weighted sum of the CMA and the CME terms, where the weights are fixed, whereas the cost function in the other scheme has time-varying weights that are recursively update using gradient techniques. In this paper, performance comparison is conducted between techniques implementing combined cost functions with fixed and variable weighting parameters. The comparison also includes the CMA and DD techniques as well as adaptive equalizations based on dual modes. In the latter, one term of the cost function is considered at one time. The common dual-mode approach calls for initialization with CMA and thereafter switching to a proper constellation-matched algorithm.
