Natural killer (NK) cells possess potent cytotoxicity against infected and cancerous cells and hold promise in the development of new immunotherapies. This article for the Highlights of 2023 Series focuses on current advances in NK cell biology in cancerous and infectious settings and highlights opportunities for therapeutic interventions, including engineered NK cell therapies and advancements in feeder cell technologies.

A hybrid active contour model based on pre-fitting energy and adaptive functions for fast image segmentation

In this study, a hybrid active contour model driven by pre-fitting energy with an adaptive edge indicator function and an adaptive sign function is proposed. The key idea of employing the pre-fitting energy is to define two pre-fitting functions to calculate mean intensities of two sub-regions separated from the selected local region based on pre-calculated median intensity of the selected local region before the curve evolves, which saves a huge amount of computation cost. In addition, a brand-new single-well potential function and its associated evolution speed function are put forward to enable evolution process to converge faster as well as more robust. Experimental outcomes indicate that this model is competent to obtain motion boundaries of different targets effectively and efficiently. Compared with traditional models and recently developed models, this model not only reduces the CPU running time and iteration number significantly as well as improves segmentation accuracies (Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and Jaccard similarity coefficient (JSC)), but also exhibits insensitivity to initialization.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Active contours driven by adaptive functions and fuzzy c-means energy for fast image segmentation

The shortcoming of geometric active contours is that they are extremely sensitive to positions of initialization. Initial contours of the distance regularized level set evolution model must be set inside or outside target completely. In addition, the model is prone to problems of falling into false boundary, leaking from weak edge and poor anti-noise ability. In this paper, we propose a robust active contour model driven by adaptive functions (including an adaptive edge indicator function and adaptive sign function) and fuzzy c-means energy. Utilize the adaptive edge indicator function which is composed of image intensity information to substitute traditional edge indicator function in the area term. Active contours can expand or shrink from initialization automatically, which improves the disadvantages of poor robustness to initialization and unidirectional movement. Due to the adaptive sign function and fuzzy c-means energy, the problems of slow convergence and leaking from weak edge have been solved. Moreover, a novel distance regularized term (mainly a potential function and evolution speed function) is proposed to make evolution more stable. Experimental results have proved that our model can segment images with intensity inhomogeneity effectively. Compared with other classic models, the proposed model not only shortens time spent and improves segmentation accuracy, but also shows a better robustness to initialization. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Active contour model based on improved fuzzy c-means algorithm and adaptive functions

Distance regularized level set evolution (DRLSE) model, which solves the re-initialization problem in early active contours, is a ground breaking edge-based model for image segmentation. However, it has the disadvantages of unsatisfactory robustness to initialization and noise, unidirectional movement, slow convergence and poor stability. In this paper, we propose an active contour model driven by improved fuzzy c-means algorithm (FCM) and adaptive functions. An adaptive sign function based on image clustering information not only increases stability, but also solves the problem of unidirectional movement. Furthermore, it gives our model the ability to selectively segment targets in image. An adaptive edge indicator function accelerates convergence with better function performance. To further increase stability, a novel double-well potential function and the corresponding evolution speed function are proposed. Due to the improved FCM, the proposed model is robust to initialization and noise. In addition, our model exhibits an edge-based and region-based characteristic. Experimental results have proved that the proposed model can not only effectively segment images with intensity inhomogeneity, but also show a good robustness to initialization. Three-terminal quantum dot light-emitting synapse with active adaptive photoelectric outputs for complex image processing/parallel computing

Machine vision enables machines to extract rich information from image or video data and make intelligent decisions. However, approaches using artificial synapse hardware systems significantly limit the real-time and accuracy in machine vision segmentation amid complex environments. Addressing this, we propose a novel three-terminal adaptive artificial-light-emitting synapse (AALS) capable of photoelectric double output along with adaptive behavior. The device uses silver nanowires (AgNWs) as polar conductive bridges to reduce reliance on transparent electrodes, while polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) dielectric layers adaptively modulate charge carrier concentrations in conductive channels. Additionally, we have designed an adaptive parallel neural network (APNN) and applied it to autonomous driving image processing. This innovation significantly reduces adaptation time and notably enhances mean pixel accuracy (MPA) for semantic segmentation under overexposure and low-light conditions by 142.2% and 304.4%, respectively. Therefore, this work introduces new strategies for advanced adaptive vision, promising significant potential in intelligent driving and neuromorphic computing.

Stimuli-responsive DNA-based hydrogels are attracting growing interest because of their smart responsiveness, excellent biocompatibility, regulated biodegradability, and programmable design properties. Integration of reconfigurable DNA architectures and switchable supramolecular moieties (as cross-linkers) in hydrogels by responding to external stimuli provides an ideal approach for the reversible tuning structural and mechanical properties of the hydrogels, which can be exploited in the development of intelligent DNA-based materials. This review highlights recent advances in the design of responsive pure DNA hydrogels, DNA-polymer hybrid hydrogels, and autonomous DNA-based hydrogels with transient behaviors. A variety of chemically and physically triggered DNA-based stimuli-responsive hydrogels and their versatile applications in biosensing, biocatalysis, cell culture and separation, drug delivery, shape memory, self-healing, and robotic actuators are summarized. Finally, we address the key challenges that the field will face in the coming years, and future prospects are identified.

The seven sins of memory: an update

Memory serves critical functions in everyday life, but it is also vulnerable to error and illusion. Two decades ago, I proposed that memory errors could be classified into seven basic categories or "sins": transience, absent-mindedness, blocking, misattribution, suggestibility, bias, and persistence. I argued that each of the seven sins provides important insights concerning the fundamentally constructive nature of human memory, while at the same time reflecting its adaptive features. In this article I briefly summarise some key developments during the past two decades that have increased our understanding of the nature, consequences, and adaptive functions of the memory sins.

Wild brains: The value of neuroethological approaches in preclinical behavioral neuroscience animal models

For three decades, IBNS has provided a forum for the dissemination of behavioral neuroscience research, broadly defined. Throughout this time, research presented at the annual meetings has reflected representative trends in the field with an emphasis on relevant preclinical animal models. From its inception, IBNS has contributed to my professional development and evolving research interests. Unsurprisingly, throughout the three decades of its existence, IBNS annual programs have reflected research trends that have been thoughtfully evaluated, chal-lenged, and, in some cases, recalibrated. An emphasis in my lab, for example, has slowly navigated toward the inclusion of more diverse species (e.g., nonhuman primate models, wild rats, wild and captive raccoons) assessed in settings that reflect more ethological relevance than typically observed in traditional laboratory settings. Consequently, my research interests are pivoting from laboratory animal model exclusive (L.A.M.E.) endeavors to more natural, diverse, ethoexperimental approaches. As progress toward translational findings for psychiatric and neurological conditions is considered, it is recommended that researchers remain open to nontraditional methodological approaches that incorporate diverse animal models and assessments to inform laboratory -generated findings.

Extreme natural and man-made events and human adaptive responses mediated by information and communication technologies' use: A systematic literature review

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are nowadays an interactive means through which humans respond to potentially stressful extreme events (e.g., natural or technological disasters). Despite growing research and reviews on ICTs' role, these often follow an event-specific approach, describing how or what people respond without explaining why they respond as they do, limiting a broader comprehension of human adaptation processes. Therefore, a systematic literature review on natural and man-made extreme events sought to identify: how people respond during extreme events through ICTs devices/platforms use, what ICTs-mediated responses take place during these, and why they respond in the way they do (i.e., the responses' adaptive functions). A database search identified 60 articles through three inclusion criteria: (1) report of events deviating in socio-physical parameters from "normal" circumstances;(2) type of ICTs devices/platforms used;and (3) longitudinal data collection method. A theory-driven content analysis showed that different ICT platforms may be used for different adaptive functions with a predominant function of allowing coordinating an individual's actions with the contingencies in the environment, through approach (e.g., problem solving) and avoidance (e.g., escape) ways of coping. ICTs seemingly are an important data source and means in enabling socio-physical systems to effectively respond to extreme events. PROSPERO CRD42016042455.

Ultrasonic vocalizations in house mice depend upon genetic relatedness of mating partners and correlate with subsequent reproductive success

Background: Courtship vocalizations are used by males of many species to attract and influence the behavior of potential mating partners. Our aim here was to investigate the modulation and reproductive consequences of courtship ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in wild-derived house mice (Mus musculus musculus). The courtship USVs of male mice are surprisingly complex and are composed of a variety of different syllable types. Our specific aims were to test whether (1) the emission of courtship USVs depends upon the kinship of a potential mating partner, and (2) whether USV emission during courtship affects the pairs' subsequent reproductive success. Results: We experimentally presented males with an unfamiliar female that was either genetically related or unrelated, and we recorded USV emission, first while the sexes were separated by a perforated partition and then during direct interactions, after removing the partition. USVs were detected by the Automatic Mouse Ultrasound Detector (A-MUD) and manually classified into 15 syllable types. The mice were kept together to test whether and how courtship vocalizations predict their subsequent reproductive success. We found that the mice significantly increased their amount of vocalizations (vocal performance) and number of syllable types (vocal repertoire) after the partition was removed and they began interacting directly. We show that unrelated pairs emitted longer and more complex USVs compared to related pairs during direct interactions. Unrelated pairs also had a greater reproductive success compared to related pairs, and in addition we found a negative correlation between the mean length and amount of vocalizations with the latency to their first litter. Conclusion: Our study provides evidence that house mice modulate the emission of courtship USVs depending upon the kinship of potential mating partners, and that courtship USVs correlate with reproductive success.
