Age of Error Information and Throughput Tradeoff for IoT Status Update Systems With Truncated and Layer-Coded HARQ

A novel status update system is designed by combining adaptive modulation and coding, and truncated and layer-coded hybrid automatic repeat request (T-L-HARQ). With the channel state information (CSI) at transmitter (CSIT), which is obtained from the receiver by using pilot-assisted estimation, the source adaptively selects its transmission rate. Due to the delay, the CSI at receiver (CSIR) is the outdated version of the CSIT, and the decoding error is inevitable. Firstly, since the backtrack decoding used in the T-L-HARQ, the classical age of information is insufficient to quantify the status update freshness, we propose the age of error information (AoEI), which is defined as the elapsed time since the generation of the lastly successfully backtrack-decoded status update. Secondly, we characterize the interdeparture time duration of two consecutively successfully feedforward transmissions and the backtrack decoding depth of a successful T-L-HARQ transmission cycle. As a result, the closed-form expression of average AoEI is derived. The simulations show that a tradeoff design between throughput and AoEI is essential by controlling backtrack decoding depth.

Link Adaptation with Position/Motion Information in Vehicle-to-Vehicle Networks

Wireless communication networks use link adaptation to select physical layer parameters that optimize the transmission strategy as a function of the wireless channel realization. In the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) networks considered in this letter, the short coherence time of the wireless channel makes link adaptation based on the impulse response challenging. Consequently, link adaptation in V2V wireless networks may instead exploit the large-scale characteristics of the wireless channel (i.e. path loss) since they evolve slowly and enable less frequent feedback. Large-scale channel information may be captured through channel or position/motion measurements. We show, through the definition of new large-scale coherence expressions, that channel measurements render large-scale coherence as a function of time-change while the position/motion measurements render coherence as a function of velocity-change. This letter is concluded with highway simulations of modeled and measured channels to demonstrate the advantage of position/motion information for feedback reduction in V2V link adaptation.

Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Transmission of Small Data Over Fading Channels: A Data-Oriented Analysis

A data-oriented approach has been recently proposed that simultaneously supports ultra-high reliability and low latency in wireless transmission systems. In this letter, we analyze the performance of small data transmissions over fading channels in terms of a data-oriented performance metric. Through analytical results and associated numerical examples, we demonstrate the effectiveness of rate/power adaptive transmission and diversity combining in achieving ultra-reliable low-latency transmissions.

Switching Between Antenna Subset Selection and Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code in Presence of Correlation

We address the problem of adaptive modulation and coding scheme(AMCS) for a multi-input multioutput(MIMO) system in presence of time-varying transmitting *** subset selection and quasiorthogonal space-time block code(QOSTBC) have different error performances with different signal-to-noise ratios(SNRs) and in different spatial correlation *** error performance can be improved by selecting an appropriate transmission scheme to adapt to various channel *** maximum distance criterion is the simplest and very effective algorithm for the antenna subset selection without needs of complex calculation and channel state information at transmitter(CSIT).The minimum error performance criteria and the simplified linear decision strategy are developed for constant transmission rate traffic to select the optimal transmission *** can dramatically decrease algorithm complexity for obtaining error probability according to the known quantities comparing with using instant *** results show that,remarkable performances including low SNR and weak spatial correlation at the expense of simple calculation and almost no bandwidth loss by adopting AMCS can be *** proposed AMCS improves robustness of slowly varying spatial correlated channels.

Two Dimensional Cross-Layer Optimization for Packet Transmission over Fading Channel

In this paper a single-input-single-output wireless data transmission system with adaptive modulation and coding over correlated fading channel is considered, where run-time power adjustment is not available. Higher layer data packets are enqueued into a finite size buffer space before being released into the time-varying wireless channel. Without fixing the physical layer error probability, the objective is to minimize the average joint packet loss rate due to both erroneous transmission and buffer overflow. Two optimization techniques are incorporated to achieve the best solution. The first is policy domain optimization that formulates the data rate adaptation design as classical Markov decision problem. The second is channel domain optimization that appropriately partitions the channel variation based on particular fading environment and carried traffic pattern. The derived policy domain analytical model can precisely map any policy design into various QoS performance metrics with finite buffer setup. We then propose a tractable suboptimization framework to produce different two-dimensional suboptimal solutions with scalable complexity-optimality tradeoff for practical implementations.

Performance characteristics of cellular systems with different link adaptation strategies

In this paper, the theoretical performance of cellular systems with different types of link adaptation is analyzed. A general link and system performance analysis framework is developed to enable the system-level performance characteristics of the various link adaptation strategies to be studied and compared. More specifically, this framework is used to compare the downlink performance of fully loaded cellular systems with fixed power and modulation/coding, adaptive modulation/coding (AMC), adaptive power allocation (APA) with system-level AMC, and water-filling (WF). Performance is studied first for idealized methods, and then for cases where some practical constraints are imposed. Finally, a hybrid link adaptation scheme is introduced and studied. The hybrid scheme is shown to overcome most of the performance loss caused by the practical constraints. Moreover, the hybrid scheme, as opposed to WF, enables the system to be tuned to meet the most important performance objective for the system under consideration, such as coverage reliability, capacity, or data rate distribution. The algorithms and the framework presented in this paper can be used to improve the link adaptation performance of modern cellular systems such as HSDPA.

TS-WHT: A Two-Step Walsh-Hadamard Transform Approach for Blind Error Correcting Code Classification

Blind classification of error-correcting codes is essential for intelligent wireless communication, cognitive radio, and non-cooperative communication. The object of this letter is to investigate the differences in the Walsh spectrum between linear block code, convolutional code, and Turbo code. Based on these differences, a two-step Walsh Hadamard transform (TS-WHT) strategy is proposed for error-correcting code blind classification. Further, according to the detection theory, the peak detection threshold is detailed and optimized with the cyclic feature of CRC codes. The results indicate that when employing the optimized threshold, probabilities of correct classification are superior for linear block codes and convolutional codes. Moreover, with the help of the fault-tolerant feature of the WHT technique, the classification accuracy of the proposed method is substantially better than existing approaches under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions.

Performance analysis of the adaptive EXP/PF channel scheduler in an AMC/TDM system

The adaptive EXP/PF AU;PL. DEFINE "EXP" ALSO channel scheduler proposed in [1] is an enhancement to the proportional fairness (PF) channel scheduler in that it guarantees delay sensitive services having the desired service delay outage probability as well as best-effort services in the forward link of an adaptive modulation and coding when used with time-division multiplexing (AMC/TDM) system. In this letter, assuming that there are many best-effort service users and one streaming service user requiring maximum delay constraints of 3 s, the system throughput of the adaptive EXP/PF scheduler is evaluated for different channel conditions of the streaming service user and is also compared with PF scheduler and its upper bound of throughput. The results show that the adaptive EXP/PF algorithm offers high system throughput as well as fairness among best-effort service users and guarantees streaming services of a desired delay constraint and outage probability.

Improvement of AMC-MIMO multiplexing systems with selection transmit diversity techniques

In this letter, adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is combined with multiple input multiple output (MIMO) multiplexing to improve the throughput performance of AMC. In addition, a system that adopts selection transmit diversity (STD) in the AMC-MIMO multiplexing system, AMC-STD-MIMO multiplexing system, is proposed. STD in our simulation selects 2 transmission antennas from 4 antennas and AMC-MIMO multiplexing process operates with the selected antennas. The computer simulation is performed in a flat Rayleigh fading channel. The results show that the proposed AMC-STD-MIMO multiplexing system achieves the SNR gain of 4.0 dB, compared to the AMC-MIMO multiplexing system at 3 Mbps throughput.

Two key challenges in underlay dynamic spectrum access (DSA) are how to establish an interference limit from the primary network (PN) and how cognitive radios (CRs) in the secondary network (SN) become aware of the interference they create on the PN, especially when there is no exchange of information between the two networks. These challenges are addressed in this paper by presenting a fully autonomous and distributed underlay DSA scheme where each CR operates based on predicting its transmission effect on the PN. The scheme is based on a cognitive engine with an artificial neural network that predicts, without exchanging information between the networks, the full adaptive modulation and channel coding configuration for the primary link that is received with highest power by a transmitting CR. By managing the effect of the SN on the PN, the presented technique maintains the relative average throughput change in the PN within a prescribed maximum value, while also finding transmit settings for the CRs that result in throughput as large as allowed by the PN interference limit. Simulation results show that the ability of the cognitive engine in estimating the effect of a CR transmission on the full adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) mode leads to a very fine resolution underlay transmit power control. This ability also provides higher transmission opportunities for the CRs, compared to a scheme that can only estimate the modulation scheme used at the PN link.
