Despite commercial 3G networks are starting to be fully operational and High Speed Data Packet Access (HSDPA) is on its way to be deployed, operators and manufacturers are already in a race towards 4G technologies. The road to 4G has a mandatory milestone in Long Term Evolution (LTE) as it is a promising technology which will allow backwards compatibility besides a higher performance. Thus operators, manufacturers and research institutes are cooperating in the definition of LTE specifications. This paper presents a performance evaluation of LTE downlink physical layer according to the latest 3GPP specifications. Particularly, the main features at the LTE physical layer (like spatial multiplexing or adaptive modulation and coding) are described and analyzed.

In a race towards 4G technologies, future cellular network like Long Term Evolution (LTE) is competing with high data rates and improved spectrum efficiency. The target of this paper is to evaluate performance of adaptive MIMO Switching (AMS) in LTE in terms of cell throughput and throughput gain with respect to other antenna configuration. The impact of different intersite distance on the performance of AMS was also investigated in this paper. The assessment was based on simulations using analytical channel model. Kronecker channel model without any Channel State Information (CSI) at transmitter was used for the simulation purposes. adaptive MIMO switching works on the principle of switching among transmit diversity, receive diversity, and spatial multiplexing in accordance to SINR level. Simulation results reveal that significant improvement in cell throughput can be achieved by applying AMS technique. However, utilization of standard MIMO transmission techniques also improves channel capacity.

Scheduling with single carrier property restriction has a significant impact on system performance in Long Term Evolution (LTE) uplink (UL). Due to the unavoidable delay of control signaling, the scheduling decisions have great influence on the variation of inter-cell interference (ICI) which affects the performance of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC). Many studies have been carried out on the topic of resource allocation in single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) system. Some of them deal with the ICI variation with inter-cell measurements or coordination. In this paper, we present the problem of frequency domain packet scheduling (FDPS), analyze the negative effects of ICI variation and develop our improved proportional fair (PF) scheduling algorithm based on the traditional one for LTE UL. Our proposed algorithm decreases the ICI variation and improves AMC accuracy without any inter-cell coordination. Compared with the traditional way, system level performance shows that at least 29% gain can be obtained at both the cell user average spectral efficiency and the cell edge user spectral efficiency with comparable proportional fairness in typical interference-limited scenario.

This paper investigates the system-level performance of downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with power-domain user multiplexing at the transmitter side and successive interference canceller (SIC) on the receiver side. The goal is to clarify the performance gains of NOMA for future LTE (Long-Term Evolution) enhancements, taking into account design aspects related to the LTE radio interface such as, frequency-domain scheduling with adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), and NOMA specific functionalities such as error propagation of SIC receiver, multi-user pairing and transmit power allocation. In particular, a pre-defined user grouping and fixed per-group power allocation are proposed to reduce the overhead associated with power allocation signalling. Based on computer simulations, we show that for both wideband and subband scheduling and both low and high mobility scenarios, NOMA can still provide a hefty portion of its expected gains even with error propagation, and also when the proposed simplified user grouping and power allocation are used.

In this paper, cross-layer combining of an adaptive modulation-coding (AMC) scheme at the physical layer and the use of automatic repeat request (ARQ) retransmissions at the medium access control (MAC) layer is integrated into the design of scheduling for multi-user wireless networks. A class of scheduling algorithms capable of jointly collecting retransmission diversity and multi-user diversity are developed for delay sensitive real-time network traffic. Numerical computer simulations are provided to examine the merits of our novel schemes for multiple real-time transmissions over Nakagami block fading channels. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed scheduling schemes can asymptotically guarantee the prescribed fairness and average delay requirements for real-time traffic, even when the underlying fading channel distribution is unknown a priori.

Multimedia content, especially videos, is expected to dominate data traffic in next-generation mobile networks. Caching popular content at the network edge, namely content helpers (base stations and access points), has emerged as a solution for low-latency content delivery. Compared with traditional wireless communication, content delivery has a key characteristic that many signals coexisting in the air carry identical popular content. However, they can interfere with each other at a receiver if their modulation-and-coding (MAC) schemes are adapted to individual channels following the classic approach. To address this issue, we present a novel idea of content adaptive MAC (CAMAC) where adapting MAC schemes to content ensures that all signals carrying identical content are encoded using an identical MAC scheme to achieve spatial MAC alignment. Consequently, interference can be harnessed as signals to improve the reliability of wireless delivery. In the remaining part of the paper, we focus on quantifying the gain that CAMAC can bring to a content-delivery network by using a stochastic-geometry model. Specifically, content helpers are distributed as a Poisson point process and each of them transmits a file from a content database based on a given popularity distribution. Given a fixed threshold on the signal-to-interference ratio for successful transmission, it is discovered that the successful content-delivery probability is closely related to the distribution of the ratio of two independent shot noise processes, named a shot-noise ratio. The distribution itself is an open mathematical problem that we tackle in this work. Using stable-distribution theory and tools from stochastic geometry, the distribution function is derived in closed form. Extending the result in the context of content-delivery networks with CAMAC yields the content-delivery probability in different closed forms. Cross-Layer design for WiMAX Systems can realize the highest usage of network resources and manage quality of service (QoS) guarantees. We present a Cross-Layer design that involves the transport layer, the data link layer and the physical layer to optimize the WiMAX resource scheduling mechanism. At the same time, we obtain the optimum number of the maximum retransmission attempts in Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) protocols, which maximizes the spectral efficiency while maintaining the required performance such as delay and PER. Then simulation proves in physical layer the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) used in conjunction with HARQ is the most suitable scheme for WiMAX Systems.

The ultra-high reliability is an essential requirement for enhanced vehicle-to-everything (eV2X) use cases. In order to ensure the desired reliability in a time-varying channel, link adaptation is required. Therefore, the current and upcoming technologies use adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) schemes. By using AMC, the reliability and data rates could be adapted according to the channel conditions. To further improve reliability, concepts like multi-connectivity could also be used. In multi-connectivity, redundant data can be transmitted using multiple simultaneous links and combined at the receiver to improve reliability. However, this requires link adaption in terms of both numbers of multiple links and AMC. In this paper, we evaluate different link adaptation schemes for IEEE 802.11bd based on single-link and multi-connectivity communications. For single-link communications, we generate channel quality indicators (CQI) based on various signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) mapping techniques, e.g., exponential effective SINR mapping (EESM), received bit information rate (RBIR), and recently proposed enhanced EESM (eEESM). The performance of these schemes is evaluated in terms of achieved reliability and data rates. Results show that eEESM achieves close to optimal performance. In the case of multi-connectivity, different MCS and link adaptation schemes are evaluated. It is shown that joint adaptation of MCS and the number of links deliver better performance in terms of data rates and link utilization.

This paper presents laboratory experimental results on 4-by-2 multi-user (MU)-MIMO that achieves up to 1 Gbps throughput using carrier aggregation with a 100-MHz bandwidth in the LTE-Advanced downlink. The achievable throughput performance employing adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) with outer-loop threshold control based on acknowledgement (ACK) / negative ACK (NACK) feedback signaling in order to compensate for the fluctuation in the measured signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) value due to MU-MIMO multiplexing is evaluated using the implemented LTE-Advanced transceivers. Additionally, we evaluate the influence of the angle between spatially multiplexed users and the user combination in MU-MIMO operation with different received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. Laboratory experimental results show that by performing AMC with outer-loop threshold control, the throughput of approximately 1 Gbps is achieved at the average received SNR of 30 dB. Furthermore, based on the experimental results, we confirm that angles narrower or wider than approximately 60 degrees between spatially multiplexed mobile stations (MSs) yield a lower ability to decrease the mutual interference using minimum mean square error (MMSE)-based precoding in 4-by-2 MU-MIMO. We also show that especially when the angle between spatially multiplexed MSs is narrower or wider than approximately 60 degrees, selecting the user pairs with a large difference in the average received SNR is effective in improving the total throughput.

As a promising downlink multiple access scheme for further LTE enhancement and future radio access (FRA), this paper investigates the system-level performance of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with a successive interference canceller (SIC) on the receiver side. The goal is to clarify the potential gains of NOMA over orthogonal multiple access (OMA) such as OFDMA, taking into account key link adaptation functionalities of the LTE radio interface such as adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ), time/frequency-domain scheduling, and outer loop link adaptation (OLLA), in addition to NOMA specific functionalities such as dynamic multi-user power allocation. Based on computer simulations, we show under multiple configurations that the system-level performance achieved by NOMA is superior to that for OMA.
