According to the characteristics of meteor burst channels, variable rate data transmission is often employed to improve the average system throughput, and the time-varying meteor channel in the presence of multi-path rays brings difficulties in both data detection and channel estimation at the receiver. As we know, per-survivor processing (PSP) based on the joint data and channel estimation of maximum likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) is often considered to obtain the optimal detection performance for time-varying channels. However, the great computational complexity of PSP is the major problem in practice. In this paper we propose an adaptive state reduction of PSP (ASRP) algorithm with few states in the trellis diagram for exponential decay of meteor channels. Based on the estimation of the meteor channel parameters, the adaptive threshold is derived to select the states close to the right one in the trellis to reduce the complexity of PSP. Theoretical analysis and computer simulations results show that the ASRP we proposed provides suboptimal performance and makes good tradeoff between the performance and the computational complexity, so that the reliable data transmission can be realized for MBC systems with adaptive modulation and coding (AMC).

Scalable video coding with adaptive modulation and coding is a promising technique to provide real-time multicast services for heterogeneous mobile devices. Nevertheless, as the rapid growth of data communication for emerging applications, energy consumption is an critical challenge of mobile devices. This paper targets the problem of resource allocation for scalable video multicast with adaptive modulation-coding schemes in next generation cellular wireless networks, with an objective to minimize the total energy consumption of all mobile devices for reception. We show the NP-hardness of the target problem and propose a 2-approximation algorithm. Extensive simulations are conducted to compare the proposed algorithm with a brute-force optimal algorithm and a conventional approach, which provides some useful insights into power-aware scalable video multicast in 4G wireless systems.

adaptive transmission schemes are a key part of the radio design for 5G wireless channels. The paper studies the performance of two types of adaptive transmission schemes in cellular downlink. One is based on rateless codes with constant power and the other is fixed-rate codes in conjunction with power adaptation. Using a simple stochastic geometry model for cellular downlink, the focus is to understand the key impact of power adaptation in rateless and fixed-rate coded adaptive transmission. The performance of both rateless and fixed-rate coded adaptive transmission schemes are compared by evaluating the typical user rate and success probability achievable with the two schemes. Based on both theoretical analysis and simulation results, the paper clearly shows that rateless coding simplifies the role of power control in an adaptive transmission scheme.

This paper evaluates the bit-error rate and spectral efficiency performance provided by the convolutional coded Quadrature Amplitude modulation (QAM) configurations whose global rates are modified mainly by changing the numbers of code and non-coded bits mapped on a QAM symbol. The Bit Error Rate (BER) performance provided are compared to the ones of the convolutional coded modulations which map only code bits and have the same configuration rates, aiming to show that coded configurations mapping non-coded bits as well, ensure a target BER value at smaller values of the Signal/Noise Ratio (SNR) than the ones mapping only code bits The paper also presents an approximate method to compute the BER of the configurations mapping both code and non-coded bits, which is validated by computer simulations and is shown to provide good accuracy in the range of BER values of practical interest.

Mobile TV and Video on Demand (VoD) streaming services represents an important service which will be provided by Fourth Generation (4G) cellular networks. Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) is one of the most successful 4G technologies used by most of the 4G operators for delivering mobile broadband. In the past, cellular systems have mostly focused on unicast transmission systems. But, with the adoption of new services which are intended to be delivered to a broad range of users, multicast and broadcast systems are becoming widely popular. Enhanced Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (EMBMS) is defined in 3GPP specification to support download delivery and streaming delivery to group users in LTE mobile networks. In 3GPP Release 8 specification, the EMBMS transmission is classified into single-cell transmission and MBSFN (Multicast Broadcast Single Frequency Network) transmission. H. 264 was the recommended video codec for Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) MBMS service. However, the Scalable Video coding (SVC) extension of H. 264 allows efficient temporal, spatial and quality scalabilities. In this paper, we propose a video streaming method with SVC for MBSFN networks with adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and frequency scheduling based on distribution of users in different channel quality regions. Through simulations we demonstrate that spectrum savings in the order of 72 to 82% is achievable in different user distribution scenarios with our proposed scheme. These savings in spectrum can be used for serving other MBSFN, single cell MBMS or unicast bearers, and it can also be used for increasing the video quality of the same MBSFN bearer.

Frequency-time scheduling is an essential radio resource management (RRM) function in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) wireless systems. In the literature, there are several OFDMA scheduling algorithms such as the Hungarian and Max-Max algorithm. However, such algorithms do not consider the multiuser diversity into account. In this paper, we propose a scheduling algorithm that exploits the multiuser diversity in both time and frequency domains. Also, the proposed algorithm utilizes the Proportional Fairness (PF) criterion to achieve faimess among users in the system. In order to support multimedia bursty traffic, our algorithm allows more than one user to share a subband in each time frame. The proposed algorithm iteratively assigns the available subbands to be shared among different users concurrently. We compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with other OFDMA scheduling algorithms in the literature. Results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms in terms of the throughput with comparable fairness performance.

Constraint scheduling is a dynamic process of arbitrating between competing users sharing a finite resource. Cross-layer scheduling allows vertical interactions between some protocol layers to optimize system performance. This article proposes a cross-layer scheduling for orthogonal frequencydivision multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless networks. The scheduler combines opportunistic communications and link adaptation to serve users with multiple concurrent flows (applications) of different quality of service (QoS) requirements. For each time slot and on each OFDM subcarrier, the scheduler computes a cost function for each How that depends on a flow's instantaneous link quality and service history. The flow with the least cost on an OFDM subcarrier is assigned the subcarrier, provided no other flow's delay constraint is in violation. The scheme is scalable, optimizes wireless throughput, traffic delay-aware, guarantees minimum service to all active flows, and has low implementation complexity.

a new transmission scheme is designed to maximize average spectral efficiency in a MIMO link considering instantaneous bit error rate (BER) and total power constraints. Discrete link adaptation using adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is utilized to combat multipath fading which is implementable in practical systems. ZF receiver is employed by which MIMO channel becomes equivalent to several parallel non interfering links. Instead of the mentioned actual links, virtual links are considered which are ordered based on their SNRs. Optimized power levels are assigned based on SNR ordering provisioning total power constraint. Numerical evaluations show a noticeable performance improvement by the proposed scheme compared to the scheme in which power is uniformly divided among actual links.

This paper analyzes the uplink spectrum efficiency of an LTE network, taking intercell co-channel interference into account. This study is based on signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio analysis and appropriate channel models including path loss and shadow fading. This paper also uses the proportional fair scheduling scheme to allocate resource blocks to improve the cell edge performance. The research results reveal that the intercell co-channel interference can cause up to 50% throughput reduction for cell edge users, but has almost no impact on cell centric user performance.

This work introduces a data-driven framework for rate control and applies it to high frequency (HF) communication systems that propagate via the Earth's ionosphere. The rate control approach uses statistical techniques to forecast channel state with an autoregressive (AR) model, which has previously been applied to different forms of wireless fading, including "medium" timescale fading at HF. The objective of rate control is to maximize the data rate while constraining the rate of packets decoded in error. We show that under ideal assumptions, the rate controller selects the rate by backing off from the forecast average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by a factor of sigma Q(-1)(beta), where sigma(2) correlates with fading variance, fi denotes a constraint on decoder errors, and Q(center dot) is the complementary cumulative distribution function of the Gaussian distribution. Simulation results on an HF channel model show that compared with naive schemes, AR forecasting provides a good balance between achieving high rate and ensuring reliability.
