The performance evaluation of mobile communication systems for time varying environments poses a major challenge. To address this issue, in this paper we propose an approach which extends a common laboratory environment by a fading channel emulator. Hereby, we analyze OFDM based links under complex and realistic radio channel conditions including upper layer protocols. By means of this setup, the influence of velocity on the data rate and Packet Error Rate (PER) of a Mobile WiMAX system is investigated for various Signal to Noise Ratios (SNR) assuming vehicular and pedestrian channel models defined by the ITU. As a result, we analyzed the performance of Mobile WiMAX for adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) dependent on the QoS target, the channel model, the user velocity and the SNR. Hereby, we assumed two partially contrary QoS targets, high data rate and target PER.

We address feasibility of adaptive transmission for rapidly varying fading channels encountered in mobile communication systems. Due to rapid channel variations and the feedback delay, implementation of adaptive transmission in these channels requires accurate prediction of future channel conditions. We describe the design and performance of adaptive transmission methods enabled by the Long Range Fading Prediction algorithms (LRP) for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and slow Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (FH/SS) systems. The LRP algorithms are tested with a modified Jakes model and our realistic physical model. To enable channel loading for adaptive OFDM (AOFDM), robust adaptive prediction methods that track channel parameter variations are developed and compared. Feasibility of AOFDM for rapidly varying mobile radio channels is demonstrated, with bit rates approaching those for channels with ideal knowledge of the channel state information (CSI). For FH/SS systems that employ coherent detection, we utilize correlated fading to predict future CSI for the upcoming frequency based on channel observations of other frequencies. This LRP method is utilized in adaptive modulation to mitigate the effects of fading. Analysis and simulation results show that while prediction is not as reliable for FH/SS as for AOFDM, significant performance gains are achieved relative to non-adaptive methods.

adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme suffers performance degradation with the signaling feedback delay, as channel state information (CSI) is outdated with time variant channel. In this paper, we propose a robust AMC scheme to mitigate the effect of signaling feedback delay, especially in vehicular environments. Channel information estimated in current time interval is utilized to obtain the distribution of channel fading in upcoming time interval. Average block error rate (FILER) for given modulation and coding scheme (MCS) is derived. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme guarantees reliable performance even in a vehicular environment with maximum Doppler frequency shift of 300Hz.

adaptive transmission which adjusts optimally transmit power level, precoding matrix, modulation and coding schemes at the cost of perfect channel state information (CSI), can greatly improve the performance of a communication link under fading environment. As the perfect CSI is difficult to be available at transmitter, it is valuable to study the adaptive design with partial CSI. Previous works showed that precoding with limited feedback proves effective in increasing transmission rate in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, and further performance gain can be achieved if power control is used along with quantized precoding. However, adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) has not been considered in previous works with partial CSIT. In order to maximize transmission rate under the constraint of fixed transmit power and target quality-of-service (QoS), we develop a novel adaptive precoding scheme along with joint power and bit loading for finite-rate feedback MIMO systems. What's more, the precoding matrix and power information are fed back through double codebooks for reducing the feedback overhead. In addition, codebook design for power information is given. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme greatly improves the transmission rate with low feedback overhead.

We consider the problem of energy-efficient point-to-point transmission of delay-sensitive data (e.g. multimedia data) over a fading channel. We propose a rigorous and unified framework for simultaneously utilizing both physical-layer and system-level techniques to minimize energy consumption, under delay constraints, in the presence of stochastic and unknown traffic and channel conditions. We formulate the problem as a Markov decision process and solve it online using reinforcement learning. The advantages of the proposed online method are that (i) it does not require a priori knowledge of the traffic arrival and channel statistics to determine the jointly optimal physical-layer and system-level power management strategies;(ii) it exploits partial information about the system so that less information needs to be learned than when using conventional reinforcement learning algorithms;and (iii) it obviates the need for action exploration, which severely limits the adaptation speed and run-time performance of conventional reinforcement learning algorithms.

In this paper, we propose a throughput optimization scheme for relay protocols based on adaptive modulation and coding (AMC). The performance of relay protocols with the AMC scheme and show that relay protocols with the AMC scheme are capable of providing better average throughput at a lower Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) level as compared to the conventional scheme with no AMC. We perform 3GPP Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) parameters based simulations to prove the performance comparison of adaptive modulation and coding Scheme (MCS) relay protocols with non-adaptive MCS relay protocols. The simulation results of the proposed system with adaptive MCS prove that among the Amplify-and-Forward (AF), Decode-and-Forward (DF) and De-Modulate-and-Forward (DMF), the DMF protocol performs best, at a lower SNR value and higher average throughput.

We propose an adaptive resource allocation framework for on-demand communications in a software-defined mobile fronthaul (MFH) network that supports dynamic processing resource sharing. Our theoretical and experimental studies point to the feasibility of secure bidirectional transmission with guaranteed bit error rate (BER) service using adaptive modulation and coding.

Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology using multiple transmit and receive antennas is considered one of essential elements for wireless communication systems in order to achieve the required spectral efficiency and high data rates. In this paper, we propose new multi-user precoding MIMO schemes named successive interference cancellation (SIC) based Per User and Stream Rate Control (S-PUSRC), and modified S-PUSRC, which are characterized by SIC based multiple stream reception and the feedback of decoding order for efficient multi-user scheduling. Additionally, a number of simulation results are presented.

We investigate link quality metrics (LQMs) based on mutual information (MI) for fast link adaptation (FLA) in IEEE 802.11n wireless local area network (WLAN) with convolutional coding and higher order modulations. The LQMs are scalar quantities that map the receiver's post-decoding behaviour in a frequency-selective channel into an equivalent behaviour in an AWGN channel. From this metric the expected packet error rate (PER) can be predicted. Two LQMs are presented that are derived from the SINRs of all sub-carriers and streams: the effective SNR and the effective mutual information. The effective mutual information is the mean mutual information including a correction factor which improves the PER estimation accuracy in various highly frequency-selective channels. The FLA algorithm dynamically selects a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) that maximizes the throughput (TP), while keeping the average PER over time below a target value. Furthermore, we present methods of searching for the most suitable MCS. Practical performance bounds are obtained by means of simulations. We show that both investigated LQMs yield accurate PER estimates and that the resulting TP of the FLA algorithm used in a 2 x 2 MIMO bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) OFDM system that performs channel estimation is only 1.7 dB from the performance bound of the TP.
