5G has emerged as the most promising solution for Industry 4.0 due to its high data rate, low latency, and high reliability. For different applications, their quality-of-service(QoS) requirements vary from time-sensitive to high throughput, so it is challenging to meet their demands on a common physical infrastructure simultaneously. The puncturing technique has the potential to achieve the scheduling of different traffic types by allocating resources in various time scales. However, as puncturing may impair the data rate of the punctured targets, the fairness among traffic will be affected. In this paper, by incorporating the factor of compensation over short time scales into the puncturing strategy, we maximize the minimum expected average rate (MEAR) over longer time scales under throughput, latency, and reliability constraints. Since the optimization problem belongs to integer programming with nonlinear constraints, we propose a heuristic scheduling algorithm to obtain a good quality solution with low complexity. The numerical results validate the effectiveness of the heuristic algorithm, and the simulation results demonstrate that the considered puncturing strategy enhances the MEAR of high data rate streams compared to other baseline schemes.

Radio link adaptivity will be a key feature of the air interfaces of future mobile communication systems. This adaptivity includes techniques such as fast scheduling, hybrid ARQ, transmit diversity and adaptive modulation and coding. The performance of adaptive modulation generally suffers from the power inefficiencies of multilevel modulation formats. This is due to the variations in bit reliabilities caused by the bit-mapping onto the signal constellation. This article presents a concept, called constellation rearrangement (CoRe), which improves the multilevel modulation power efficiency by the joint application with transmit diversity schemes. It is shown by a theoretical analysis for 16-QAM that the presented concept can equalize variations in bit reliabilities by employing different mapping rules for the transmission over the diversity branches. This significantly improves the receiver block error rate performance and, hence, the performance of the adaptive modulation and coding. This is proven by simulations at link-level in a multicarrier CDMA system for AWGN and fading channels employing turbo coded transmission.

In this paper, we study bandwidth management of a wireless/optical based access/metro network in support of voice and data services. For voice services, we use a finite state Markov Chain to estimate the blocking probability of voice circuits over an adaptive modulation and coding wireless channel, as a function of the channel parameters. For data services, we evaluate a rate matching and a buffer level control schemes to adjust optical provisioned bandwidth with the wireless channel capacity. We use analysis and event-driven simulation to substantiate our findings.

A new scheme for error-free transmission is presented which uses optimized combination of adaptive modulation and coding ( AMC) and automatic repeat request ( ARQ). Using conventional error correction codes with finite length, a limited value of packet error rate ( PER) is inevitable. More powerful codes with more extra parity bits results in lower PER, however, at the cost of more transmit power per bit which is limited by average power constraint. Remained erroneous packets may be detected by error detection codes and be substituted by retransmission request in ARQ. However, when error correction capability is weak, throughput decreases due to increase of required retransmissions. In this article a method for optimum combination of error correction codes in AMC and error detection codes in ARQ is provided. In practice, due to estimation error and time variant channels, noisy and outdated channel state information ( imperfect CSI) is available which restricts providing exact instantaneous PER constraint. To satisfy instantaneous PER constraint based on imperfect CSI, a novel technique is designed in this paper. Numerical evaluations indicate the efficiency of the proposed design.

An analytical method for the performance evaluation of adaptive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems by a Markov model is proposed. The finite state Markov channel model parameters were determined by a new exact expression for level crossing rate of the signal to noise ratio at the output of MIMO with multichannel beamforming and imperfect channel state information. Using the developed model, we analyzed the average spectral efficiency and the residual packet error rate in system that combines multichannel beamforming, adaptive modulation and hybrid Automatic Repeat-reQuest (ARQ) procedures. The analytical results are given for Ricean propagation, imperfect channel state information and arbitrary channel matrix dimensions.

In order to adapt channel variation and maximize throughput performance, Adapt modulation and coding (AMC) is used in Long-Term Evaluation (LTE) downlink. However, due to the wireless channel random variation, inaccurate reported Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) is introduced, which will affect quality of data transmission. Therefore, it is necessary to modify reported CQI in AMC process. Although this paper adopts a traditional CQI correction algorithm, it ignores the influence of great deviation and burst noise. To overcome these shortages, an improved CQI correction algorithm which is based on the traditional method is proposed. The new algorithm is not only depend on acknowledge of data blocks but also depend on previous modified CQI to correct current reported CQI. The performance of two CQI correction algorithm based on both perfect noise power estimation and real noise power estimation are simulated in a LTE downlink platform. By comparing these results, it can be conclude that performance of new CQI correction algorithm is better when the terminal moving in the high-speed channel model ETU300.

The main obstacle ahead of providing explicit quality of service guarantees for packet-switch wireless networks is the lack of channel model which represents channel in term of connection-level QoS metrics such as data rate, delay and delay violation probability. The recently proposed Effective Capacity ill model for wireless channels which is the dual of well-known Effective Bandwidth [2] model for VBR traffic sources has tackled this problem properly. In this article we propose the combination of these two theories as a solution for important problem of guaranteeing QoS for video stream over wireless channel. Analytical results reveal that the results hold asymptotically but using simulation results we verify the applicability of the results for practical purposes.

Video data claims a significant portion of global mobile data communications, currently standing at 55%. This demand outburst has been due to exceptional display technolo- gies, on-demand video, gaming and live video streaming, to name a few. Despite the massive data rates supported by modern mobile communication technologies, video data is starting to overload mobile networks. This is particularly true in links with low connectivity, where repeat requests flood the system. As solutions for this inevitable demand growth, in addition to efficient video compres- sion methods, more video data error resilience must be sought. One reason video traffic is vulnerable to channel errors is the method it is treated at transmission; treatment as any other generic data type. Video is a unique data type because its ultimate user is not a machine, but a human, and because the contents within the data are inter- dependent on each other. Based on its properties, video compression, transmission methodology, and the decoding function must be adapted. By considering video com- munication as a collaborative effort of these three functions, error resilience can be effectively implemented. Analysis of radio resources available for data transmission in a multipath fading channel reveals that some resources are more robust than others. In the first contribution of this thesis, this characteristic is utilised to impose more resilience to more sensitive data within the video. Reliable means of forecasting the relative robustness of each radio resource are designed. Criteria for identifying the sensitivity of different video data segments are formulated. Finally, a technology is presented to map data to radio resources such that maximum received video quality is achieved. Cognitive radio (CR) technology has been considered one of the most promising solutions to make the best potential use of the scarce spectrum resources in next generation wireless communication. Because of the stringent limitations on the utilization of the radio resources in a cognitive radio network (CRN), the available resources are usually scarce and dynamic. Developing appropriate mechanism to construct allocation protocols for CRN that can assign the resources in a fair and efficient manner to diverse users with different features is essential to achieve the promise of the CR technology in reality and worth studying. "The mechanism for resource allocation protocol design in CRN" describes the topic of this research work and the contents of this thesis are organized around it. Before investigating how to design appropriate mechanism for CR resource allocation (RA) protocols, the model of the radio resource and the model of how a CR system utilizes the resource have to be clarified. In this thesis, by a comprehensive study of the relevant literatures, the modeling of critical components of a CR system and the theory behind it are identified and investigated. The existing protocols are also analyzed to address the limitations and gaps in the design of allocation protocols. An important feature, if not the most, that the allocation protocol for the CRN should possess is the ability to adjust the strategy of RA when the circumstances that affect the data transmission of the CR system varies, such as the activity of the license users or the variety of CR users' demands. According to such considerations, the mechanism, namely distribution probability matrix (DPM), is designed to guide and describe the channel allocation protocol quantitatively. To testify how this mechanism works, the protocols based on the DPM, together with reference protocols in a multichannel CRN, are analyzed by a queuing model. This paper focuses on the design of radio resource management policies for multicast service delivery in WiMAX networks. With the purpose of finding an alternative solution to the conventional multicast scheme that is conservative towards resource utilization, we propose to use a subgroup-based link adaptation technique that dynamically chooses the modulation and coding schemes based on the perceived channel conditions in each subgroup of multicast receivers. The main idea is to split the multicast destinations into different subgroups depending on the perceived channel quality, and to apply subgroup-based adaptive modulation and coding for a more efficient spectrum exploitation. The performance of different solutions for the subgroups formation will be analyzed and their effectiveness evaluated through simulations to show how the network can take advantage from the proposed subgrouping approach.
