Robust transmission using channel encoding towards 5G New Radio: A telemetry approach

This paper presents a robust channel encoding scheme under adaptive modulation and coding for a massive machine type communication device in 5G new radio. For the very first time, modeselection and distance statistics algorithms have been simultaneously evaluated, in which together it provides the closest approximation of efficient adaptive modulation and coding with robust transmission. The prediction of optimum adaptive modulation and coding is based on the analysis of uplink packet using distance statistics, and downlink packet using mode-selection mechanism. The performance of 5G new radio by incorporating OFDM subcarrier has been evaluated using analytical as well as simulation approach. Mode-selection algorithm has been considered to predict the environmental condition under a fading channel while the distance statistics provide feedback of the previously transmitted channel condition. The result of both the approaches provide a better bit error rate for adaptive modulation & coding profile under 1/4, 1/ 18, 1/16 and 1/32 cyclic prefix.

The core of cognitive radio is the problem concerning intelligent decision-making for communication parameters, the objective of which is to find the most appropriate parameter configuration to optimize transmission performance. The current algorithms have the disadvantages of high dependence on prior knowledge, large amount of calculation, and high complexity. We propose a new decision-making model by making full use of the interactivity of reinforcement learning (RL) and applying the Q-learning algorithm. By simplifying the decision-making process, we avoid large-scale RL, reduce complexity and improve timeliness. The proposed model is able to find the optimal waveform parameter configuration for the communication system in complex channels without prior knowledge. Moreover, this model is more flexible than previous decision-making models. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our model. The model not only exhibits better decision-making performance in the AWGN channels than the traditional method, but also make reasonable decisions in the fading channels.

Deep Learning for Joint Adaptations of Transmission Rate and Payload Length in Vehicular Networks

Recently, vehicular networks have emerged to facilitate intelligent transportation systems (ITS). They enable vehicles to communicate with each other in order to provide various services such as traffic safety, autonomous driving, and entertainments. The vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication channel is doubly selective, where the channel changes within the transmission bandwidth and the frame duration. This necessitates robust algorithms to provide reliable V2V communications. In this paper, we propose a scheme that provides joint adaptive modulation, coding and payload length selection (AMCPLS) for V2V communications. Our AMCPLS scheme selects both the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) and the payload length of transmission frames for V2V communication links, according to the V2V channel condition. Our aim is to achieve both reliability and spectrum efficiency. Our proposed AMCPLS scheme improves the V2V effective throughput performance while satisfying a predefined frame error rate (FER). Furthermore, we present a deep learning approach that exploits deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) for implementing the proposed AMCPLS. Simulation results reveal that the proposed DCNN-based AMCPLS approach outperforms other competing machine learning algorithms such as k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) and support vector machines (SVM) in terms of FER, effective throughput, and prediction time.

The high-frequency segment (10-66 GHz) of the IEEE 802.16 standard seems promising for the implementation of wireless backhaul networks carrying large volumes of Internet traffic. In contrast to wireline backbone networks, where channel errors seldom occur, the TCP protocol in IEEE 802.16 Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access networks is conditioned exclusively by wireless channel impairments rather than by congestion. This renders a cross-layer design approach between the transport and physical layers more appropriate during fading periods. In this paper, an adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) scheme for TCP throughput maximization is presented. In the current approach, Internet traffic is modulated and coded employing an adaptive scheme that is mathematically equivalent to the replicator dynamics model. The stability of the proposed ACM scheme is proven, and the dependence of the speed of convergence on various physical-layer parameters is investigated. It is also shown that convergence to the strategy that maximizes TCP throughput may be further accelerated by increasing the amount of information from the physical layer.

Efficient Deployment of Relay Stations in IEEE802.16m for Cost Effective Performance

The relay station (RS) is widely used in major wireless technologies such as WiMAX and long term evolution (LTE) which provides cost effective services to the operators and end users in order to provide guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS). The existing research in IEEE802.16m to cover a base station (BS) territory in rural areas using four RSs in order to provide the services to mobile users beyond the range of BS has proven to be a costly solution. In this paper, how to use the available spectral resources as efficiently as possible to minimize the delay and improve throughput for end users with high demanding applications such as voice and video with decreased deployment cost of RS has been investigated. A novel solution has been proposed for cost effective deployment of three RSs in IEEE802.16m using adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme, cell sectoring and directional antenna. The simulation results show that enhanced performance can be achieved by using less number of RS in the same BS territory without compromising the QoS and throughput of the WiMAX2 Network.

We propose an unbiased signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) estimator for the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) system. The proposed SIR estimator solves the problem of underestimation present in conventional SIR estimators and is suitable for channel quality measurement in the adaptive modulation and coding scheme of HSDPA, which requires accurate SIR estimation for optimum adaptive modulation and coding selection. Our analysis and simulation results demonstrate the improved estimation performance of the proposed SIR estimator.

The main obstacle ahead of providing explicit quality of service guarantees for packet-switch wireless networks is the lack of channel model which represents channel in term of connection-level QoS metrics such as data rate, delay and delay violation probability. The recently proposed Effective Capacity [1]model for wireless channels which is the dual of well-known Effective Bandwidth [2] model for VBR traffic sources has tackled this problem properly. In this article we propose the combination of these two theories as a solution for important problem of guaranteeing QoS for video stream over wireless channel. Analytical results reveal that the results hold asymptotically but using simulation results we verify the applicability of the results for practical purposes.

Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology aims at addressing the increasing demand for mobile multimedia services in high user density areas. Channel aware scheduling across wide system bandwidth is one of the key techniques enabling this goal. To this end, the LTE scheduler heavily relies on an accurate and robust Link Adaptation (LA) function for predicting the best modulation and coding scheme (MCS) of a user. In this paper, we complement the popular block error rate (BLER) based LA with a scheme maximizing the throughput without BLER constraint and show that it indeed optimizes the spectral efficiency performance. We also describe a sub-optimal UL scheduler providing a good performance/complexity trade-off between a low-complexity basic scheduler and the optimal, but impractical complexity-wise.

Mobile TV and Video on Demand (VoD) streaming services represents an important service which will be provided by Fourth Generation (4G) cellular networks. Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) is one of the most successful 4G technologies used by most of the 4G operators for delivering mobile broadband. In the past, cellular systems have mostly focused on unicast transmission systems. But, with the adoption of new services which are intended to be delivered to a broad range of users, multicast and broadcast systems are becoming widely popular. Enhanced Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (EMBMS) is defined in 3GPP specification to support download delivery and streaming delivery to group users in LTE mobile networks. In 3GPP Release 8 specification, the EMBMS transmission is classified into single-cell transmission and MBSFN (Multicast Broadcast Single Frequency Network) transmission. H.264 was the recommended video codec for Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) MBMS service. However, the Scalable Video coding (SVC) extension of H.264 allows efficient temporal, spatial and quality scalabilities. In this paper, we propose a video streaming method with SVC for MBSFN networks with adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and frequency scheduling based on distribution of users in different channel quality regions. Through simulations we demonstrate that spectrum savings in the order of 72 to 82% is achievable in different user distribution scenarios with our proposed scheme. These savings in spectrum can be used for serving other MBSFN, single cell MBMS or unicast bearers, and it can also be used for increasing the video quality of the same MBSFN bearer.
