Scheduling with single carrier property restriction has a significant impact on system performance in Long Term Evolution (LTE) uplink (UL). Due to the unavoidable delay of control signaling, the scheduling decisions have great influence on the variation of inter-cell interference (ICI) which affects the performance of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC). Many studies have been carried out on the topic of resource allocation in single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) system. Some of them deal with the ICI variation with inter-cell measurements or coordination. In this paper, we present the problem of frequency domain packet scheduling (FDPS), analyze the negative effects of ICI variation and develop our improved proportional fair (PF) scheduling algorithm based on the traditional one for LTE UL. Our proposed algorithm decreases the ICI variation and improves AMC accuracy without any inter-cell coordination. Compared with the traditional way, system level performance shows that at least 29% gain can be obtained at both the cell user average spectral efficiency and the cell edge user spectral efficiency with comparable proportional fairness in typical interference-limited scenario.

In this paper, a cellular optical wireless communication system based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is simulated inside an aircraft cabin. Asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM) and direct-current-biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) transmission schemes are compared in terms of throughput and cell coverage. Cellular networks with wavelength reuse factors of 1 (full reuse), 2 and 3 are modeled, and off-the-shelf optical front-end components are assumed. Signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) maps are determined via a Monte Carlo ray-tracing (MCRT) global irradiation simulation in a computer-aided design (CAD) cabin model. Due to the use of OFDM, adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) can be applied to the SINR maps to arrive at the spatial throughput. It is shown that throughput within the range of 1.56 - 30 Mbps is achievable with the considered ACO-OFDM system, whereas DCO-OFDM doubles the throughput to 3.13-60 Mbps. In addition, wavelength reuse factors of 3 or higher are needed to ensure full cell support for both transmission schemes.

In this paper, we study bandwidth management of a wireless/optical based access/metro network in support of voice and data services. For voice services, we use a finite state Markov Chain to estimate the blocking probability of voice circuits over an adaptive modulation and coding wireless channel, as a function of the channel parameters. For data services, we evaluate a rate matching and a buffer level control schemes to adjust optical provisioned bandwidth with the wireless channel capacity. We use analysis and event-driven simulation to substantiate our findings.

Considering the hybrid access mode including the underlay-sharing and interweave-sharing modes, the joint optimization of transmission rate and power can efficiently improve the average spectral efficiency of a cognitive user in a cognitive radio context. In this paper, to maximize the average spectral efficiency of the cognitive user, the primary and cognitive users equipped with the adaptive modulation and coding capability can adjust their transmission mode with the constraints of the average spectral efficiency of the primary link, the average transmission power of the cognitive link and the average packet error rates of both the links. In the proposed hybrid access mode, the cognitive user adopts constant and variable transmission powers for different transmission rates, respectively. The numerical results show that the average spectral efficiency of the cognitive link with adaptive transmission power is higher than the respective spectral efficiency with constant transmission power.

Wireless channel condition varies due to factors like fading, path loss, noise and other channel impairments. Due to these the channel throughput, packet delivery ratio also varies. In order to achieve higher transmission rates, various modulation schemes are in use. Adapting suitable modulation scheme to match the transmission rates to time varying channel conditions can increase the throughput of mobile adhoc networks. The simulation experiment carried in this paper dynamically adapts BPSK, QPSK, 16-QAM or 64-QAM for a single UDP traffic between a sender and receiver. modulation schemes are varied by varying packet drop rates and distance of receiver from sender for a video traffic in OFDM channel using AODV as the routing protocol. The performance is measured in terms of PDR, throughput, PSNR and routing overhead for this adaptive modulation and coding technique.

We consider an Underwater Acoustic Network (UAN) where each node is equipped with a suite of signals and so there is the flexibility to aim for different bit rates at each transmission slot. A Cross-Entropy (CE) centralized algorithm is explored to optimize the combination of modulation scheme and transmission power level in the presence of unreliable channels. Optimization metrics such as throughput, energy per bit, latency and their combination are considered. The motivation for this research stems from the fact that surveillance networks using battery-powered Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) need to be able to promptly deliver critical data while prolonging their lifetime and reducing the footprint of their transmissions. The proposed strategy has been validated by post-processing thousands of acoustic signals recorded during the Littoral Acoustic Communications Experiment 2017 (LACE17) sea trial in the Gulf of La Spezia, Italy. Our analysis shows the trade-off between the bit rate and the transmission power given the selected optimization metrics. The solution computed when combining all the considered metrics makes possible to improve up to three times the throughput performance and up to one order of magnitude the energy consumption with respect to considering single other optimization metrics.

For meteor burst communications (MBC), although per-survivor processing (PSP) based on joint data and channel estimation provides superior performance and robustness for meteor burst communications (MBC), great computational complexity constrains its application in practice. On this occasion, a dimension-down PSP (D-PSP) algorithm and a adaptive state reduction of PSP (ASRP) algorithm are proposed to curve this problem in this paper. On the basis of this, the adaptive state reduction using a dimension-down PSP (ADPSP) is proposed to combine the advantages of D-PSP and ASRP, which reduces the computational time and memory size for exponentially decaying meteor burst channels and makes maximum likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) possible for adaptive data transmission. Simulation results are presented to validate the theoretical analysis. It is shown that deploying the proposed ADPSP algorithm can achieve a good tradeoff between performance and computational complexity dynamically, and provide reliable data transmission for MBC systems with adaptive coding and modulation.

A Markov Based method for modulation and coding Scheme (MCS) selection is proposed for Pilot assistant adoptive modulalion and coding scheme (AMC) with Hybrid ARQ (HARQ) retransmissions. A first-order finite-state Markov model (FSMM) is introduced to represent the time correlation character of channel fading during (Channel Quality Indicator) CQI feedback and HARQ retransinissions. According to different QoS tat-get, such as maximize the air interface throughput or maintains a target Frame Error Rate (FER) for each user, The Markov Based method can deduce different reference Pilot thresholds for each MCS. Theoretical analysis and link level simulation results both show the efficiency of the Markov based method for Pilot threshold calculation according to different QoS target and different HARQ retransmission times.

Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology using multiple transmit and receive antennas is considered one of essential elements for wireless communication systems in order to achieve the required spectral efficiency and high data rates. In this paper, we propose new multi-user precoding MIMO schemes named successive interference cancellation (SIC) based Per User and Stream Rate Control (S-PUSRC), and modified S-PUSRC, which are characterized by SIC based multiple stream reception and the feedback of decoding order for efficient multi-user scheduling. Additionally, a number of simulation results are presented.
